Zawadi was in her room getting ready. Lucas had informed her that his mother had invited them to dinner. She was nervous, but Lucas had managed to convince her that everything would be fine.
She put on her blue dress with matching stiletto heels and held her hair in a neat bun. She applied little makeup as she usually did.
"Lucas, I'm ready" she shouted at Lucas who was waiting for her in the living room.
"Finally, come on Cupcake .We'll be late and my mom won't like that" he told her.
"Coming " she replied joining him in the living room.
"Gorgeous " he complemented, his eyes raking her body.
"Thank you. You are not so bad yourself " she teased.
"Really? " he said, moving to place a kiss on her lips.
"Uh uh uh, we'll be late remember, and your mother won't like that. " she threw his words back at him.
"Let's go cupcake" he said leading her to the car.
The journey to his mother's house was a bit long. She turned to him for the hundredth time, " are we there yet?" she asked.
"Yes Cupcake "
"Really? " she questioned in disbelief.
"Yes yes. Come on" he said as the car came to a stop.
"Thank you " she told him when he opened the door for her.
His mother's house was huge, bigger than his. Zawadi stared in awe as she made her way inside.
"It's beautiful " she commented her eyes still fixed on the beautiful house before her.
"Thanks, come in" he opened the door for her.
"Lucas, my boy. You are finally here" a woman suddenly engulfed Lucas in a hug.
"Yes mum. I- I l-love you but I can't breathe." he said wiggling to get out of her hold.
All this while Zawadi stared with a smile on her face. The scene before her
reminded her of her mother. It had been years since she had last seen her but she still remembered every moment they had together.
And she hoped that she would soon reunite with her parents.
"Mum, this is Zawadi, my girlfriend " Lucas introduced.
"Hi, nice to meet you " Zawadi stretched out her hand to greet her but she ignored her. Instead she raked her eyes through her body and Zawadi, feeling uncomfortable squirmed under her gaze.
She withdrew her outstretched hand, moving closer to Lucas. Lucas had noticed his mother's behavior but he brushed it off.
"Lucas, can I have a word with you. In private" Ms Steele said, putting emphasis on the word private.
" I'll be back in a minute " he laid a gentle kiss on her forehead before leaving for the kitchen with his mum.
Zawadi didn't mean to eavesdrop but they were speaking a bit loudly and every word they said found its way to her ears.
"This, this is what you brought me as a daughter in law? She is a nobody. My son, you can have any woman you want. Why are you wasting your time with her " she spat out, venom dripping from her voice.
Every word she said was like a knife piercing Zawadi's skin. Her words really stung. She had hoped that Mrs Steele would like her. She had spent the whole of her morning trying to rehearse what to tell her when they finally met of course that had been a waste of time.
"Mum, I love Zawadi and it's her I want and no one else. Please, can't you just accept her? Give her a chance. You'll love her mum, I promise. Please, for me. "Lucas pleaded.
"Okay, I'll try. " she let out a sigh.
She moved to the middle of the room when she heard their footsteps.
"Come sit, Zawadi. " Lucas led to her to the couch and sat himself beside her.
Still Zawadi did not say a word. She remained quiet. The truth was that she didn't know what to say. She could feel the tension in the room and she was well aware of the fact that Mrs Steele didn't like her.
"Zawadi dear, please help me set up the table" Mrs Steele suddenly said.
"Uhm yes" Zawadi said nervously standing to follow her into the kitchen.
"What should I do first?" Zawadi asked Mrs Steele.
"See? This is exactly it. I knew it. You know nothing. You don't belong with my son. You dont even deserve him. All you are after is his money. Nothing else. I know the likes of you. But let me tell you this, you will never get even a penny from my son.
I will not allow it for as long as I am alive
I will make sure that I throw you out of his life. I promise you. " Mrs Steele shouted at Zawadi.
Zawadi was beyond shocked. She knew that Mrs Steele didn't like her, but she had no idea she hated her this much.
Swallowing the hurt she felt at her accusation, Zawadi spoke." Mrs Steele you've got it all wrong. I love your son..."
Mrs Steele scoffed, "You love my son. You can fool him but not me. I can see right through your facade. You may have him wrapped around your little finger but you can never fool me. I will make sure that your plan fails. "
"Did you invite me here to insult me? You don't even know me and instead of getting to know me, you are just jumping into conclusions. I don't want your sons money. I never have and never will. I love him and not his money. And I will prove it to you." Zawadi said and quickly left the kitchen.
She tried her best to keep herself together, but she just couldn't. As soon as she was out of sight, she broke down.
All of the pent up anger, frustration and hurt flowed out through her tears. She was more hurt than she was angry. The accusations that Mrs Steele had hurled at her broke her heart.
At first she was hopeful that she would like her but now she was sure that she hated her at first sight.
At that moment she decided that she would prove Mrs Steele wrong. That she would show her just how much she loved her son.
"Zawadi? " Lucas called and Zawadi quickly turned around to hide her tears.
"Yes" she answered as she quickly dried her eyes.
"Are you crying? " Lucas asked turning her around to meet his gaze.
"No, I am fine" she said, but of course he noticed the rush denial and knew that something was wrong.
"Is it my mom? " she didn't answer. "It's her, I knew it . What did she tell you? "
"No Lucas I'm fine there was just something in my eye"
"Come" he ordered once again pulling her with him.
