Chapter 10: Chapter 10 (Dreaming Of The Past II)
After a while when they were done eating, Miles and the rest of his family left the restaurant. They all boarded the vehicle they rented for their stay in the country and headed for the cinema.
Their destination was a mall located somewhere in the center of the city and since the pizza shop was also located in the same area it didn't take too long to get cinema.
They weren't surprised to see that the place was also crowded when they reached the huge mall.
Tom had to carry Miles on his shoulder while Sophie held Ivy's arm tightly in order not to lose sight of them admist the crowd as they entered the mall.
They took the elevator to reach the higher floors where the cinema was located. Afterwards, Tom hurriedly purchased tickets for the movie they wanted to watch but before they could enter the cinema Miles announced that he desperately needed to go the toilet
"That's the result of your greed from eating too much of that pizza." Ivy said in annoyance because she was pissed that they might miss parts of the movie because of Miles.
"Don't worry I'll wait for him. You and Ivy can go in without us but just save seats for us." Tom suggested to Sophie when he noticed Ivy's dissatisfaction.
Ivy was ecstatic about her father's response. She stuck her tongue out to tease Miles.
However, Miles who was clutching his stomach ignored her because the pain he was feeling was more of a priority to him at the moment.
After Tom had escorted Miles to the toilet, he decided to use his free moment to get snacks and refreshments for them to have while they watched the movie. Because they were in a hurry not to miss the ticket sales, they were unable to get some earlier.
"Miles, I just want to go get some snacks, if you're through, just wait here for me and don't go anywhere." Tom knocked on the door to inform Miles before he left.
"Okay." Miles briefly answered from inside the toilet.
There was a short queue at the snack booth, so Tom had to join the line of people in order to wait for his turn. After waiting a few seconds, his sharp senses of an S-rank psyker suddenly detected too many unstable core energies on the verge of chaos.
When Tom was about to dismiss his thoughts, too many loud noises and screams caught his attention.
He abandoned the queue and quickly approached the balcony of the floor he was currently on. The scene Tom was watching below him was horrifying and it shocked him to the core.
"How could this be happening? Was there a breach at the border wall? " These were the next thoughts that popped into Tom's head. "This is totally unbelievable..." he uttered in disbelief.
The lower floors of the mall were getting swarmed with numerous beasts called the bone-thorned wolf. These were wolves that had undergone mutation during the evolution era.
Their skin was much tougher than that of a normal wolf and it was also covered in sharp thorns that were made of bones which they could also shoot at their prey.
They were among the most ferocious kind of evolved wolves after evolution. These beasts also possess a high degree of intelligence.
In spite of their large numbers, they were very organized because they were under the leadership of an alpha which was much larger and even possessed a much higher intelligence that equals a thirteen year old teenager.
There was already a huge massacre inside the mall. This is because the large number of people inside the building made it easier for the wolves to catch a lot of prey without having to chase them too hard.
"These damned monsters....." Tom cursed as he stretched out his arm and fired several lightning strikes at the wolves which killed most of them instantly.
When he quickly noticed that some of the wolves were already making their way to the higher levels of the building. Tom launched another lightning strike to destroy the stairway and escalator to prevent the wolves from closing more distance.
Although it wasn't enough to stop them it would at least slow them down to buy the civilians more time to escape. Likewise, Tom destroyed the mall's entrance with another lightning blast to prevent more wolves from entering.
"Everybody go to the back exit now." Tom yelled loudly before sprinting off to find his own family.
Miles had been waiting for his dad for the past couple minutes. He could also hear the loud commotion outside the toilet but he didn't leave the men's room and waited just like Tom instructed him to.
As Miles continued to wait, something suddenly crashed against the door of the men's room which startled him.
"Dad, is that you?" Miles called out but he received no response.
The banging against the door continued repeatedly. When Miles noticed the door was slowly cracking and on the verge of breaking, he instinctively took a step back against the wall.
BANG!!!
The door crashed into pieces and three bone-thorned wolves slowly strolled into the room. They bared their fangs at Miles who was standing against the wall with no way to escape.
Miles shut his eyes and crouched as one of the wolves launched itself into the air to pounce on him. He was anticipating the wolf's collision, but instead its body crashed on the floor right in front of Miles.
The burned body of the wolf was now breathless when Miles opened his eyes again. He shifted his gaze upward and he felt glad to see his father standing at the entrance of the room.
The remaining two bone-thorned wolves also shifted their attention back to the entrance after seeing how one of their kind was attacked from behind.
"You crazy monsters, how dare you try to touch my son?" Tom yelled furiously. Both of his hands were glowing in blue light as he launched towards lightning striking at the two wolves that rushed to attack him at once.
Tom hurriedly ran closer to Miles and knelt in front of him to match his son's height. "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" Tom frantically asked while examining Miles' body thoroughly for any injuries.
"I'm okay dad, though I would have been eaten by the dogs if you were a second late." Miles joked.
Tom kissed Miles on the forehead and hugged him tightly. "I know and I'm sorry I was late." He sincerly apologized.
"What's going on dad? Are mom and Ivy safe too?" Miles asked after breaking the hug.
"I don't understand what's going on but your mother and sister are both still at the cinema. I had to come pick you up first, so we have to go get them now." Tom replied and lifted Miles into his arms before they headed back to the cinema.
Tom dashed towards the direction of the theater which seemed to be unaffected by the attack. Both he and Miles felt at ease at this discovery, however, their joy was short-lived as they got closer to the cinema a sudden explosion blasted them both backwards with an enormous force.
It was a couple of minutes later that Miles regained his consciousness. He was lying on the floor under the debris of the explosion.
As he struggled to get out of it, Miles saw his father's bloodied and injured figure standing before multiple opponents that were psykers.
Due to his injuries, Tom was being pushed back by his opponents because he did not have the stamina to fight much longer.
"Why did you do this, Matthais?" Tom shouted in rage.
"Thomas Reed, one the world's top psyker, now look at what you've become." Matthais said as he slowly descended to the ground.
"You had everything any psyker desired but you got way too pompous. Did you think Hydra would watch you ruin their plans after rejecting the hand they extended to you?"
"Is that why you sacrificed a lot of people including my entire family?" Tom questioned while screaming at Matthais.
Matthais smiled cruelly. "I wished there had been another way, but you were just too powerful to fight head on, so it was a sacrifice that we needed to make." He shrugged his shoulders.
"You bastard, I'll kill all of you...all of you." Tom vanished from where he stood with lightning speed towards Matthais and punched.
Matthais also didn't dare to be cocky. He quickly shielded himself with a barrier but Tom's fist broke through it and connected to his chest.
The force pushed him several meters high into the sky before he regained control of his own body.
Tom also followed his body by propelling himself into the sky to attack Matthais again.
The rest of the other Psykers attacked Tom simultaneously. Tom created an electrical field to deflect their attacks but he was unable to defend himself from all their attacks because he was already out of stamina.
"You persistent bastard." Matthais roared as he unleashed a massive wave of energy that blasted Tom causing him to crash back to the ground.
Tom wanted to get back up but he was too weak. He suddenly sighted Miles who quietly hid himself to prevent them from discovering his was still alive.
Tom smiled in regret as he gazed at his son. "I'm sorry." He quietly whispered.
Matthais hovered above Tom's body. "This is your end Thomas. Don't worry I'll make the world remember you since you've always wanted to be a hero."
Matthais raised his hand to form a red energy spear and stabbed Tom's chest.
Tom didn't blink as the spear pierced into him. He just kept his gaze on Miles and his last words were. "Run.." Tom said in a pleading tone as his glowed in blue lightning that was also generating all over his body.
"Mathias, I have present for you." Tom stretched his palm towards Mathias and blasted an extremely powerful lightning wave at him. Mathias reacted instinctively to block it, but he was blown away by the shockwave.
Miles cried as he watched his father's take his last breath while looking at him, but at the same time, he could also hear a familiar voice calling his name repeatedly.
"Miles..Miles... Miles..wake up dude, it's morning and time for P.E." The voice said.
Miles followed the sound of the voice and slowly opened his eyes to see Brian relentlessly trying to wake him up.
"Good morning sunshine, looks like you had a very terrible first night." Brian smiled as he pointed to Miles' cheeks that were stained in tiny strings of tears.
