Chapter 3: Growing Up

Looking around Ambrose wondered what was happening. One moment he felt a pain that he couldn't stand, but the next moment he felt nothing. Now he woke up again feeling better than ever. In a body that was his yet felt so different to what he was used to he wondered if all these sensations were even his.

Looking up he saw his mother and father. The pair looked at him with pure warmth and love. He remembered his last mother who sold him for some food. He didn't know anything about a father. He didn't remember much about her after entering the hospital, but he was sure he had never seen those emotions from her.

Looking to his side he saw another baby. Just as he looked over, she looked at him as well. Although she felt familiar, he ignored it for now and simply stared at her wondering if this was his sister. He didn't remember any siblings before, so this was also a new feeling.

Staring off into space he wondered what was happening. Wanting to know anything of what was happening he decided to ask and spoke aloud, or at least tried to "Ba... Bu?"

"OH! Ambrose spoke! They were so quiet I was worried something was wrong!" Edmund spoke loudly as he reached down to pinch Amrose's cheeks.

Lily also made some sounds, "B-B-Bu?"

The twins suddenly looked at each other after a moment. They stared at each other as if asking each other what was happening. Ambrose raised his small hands as if to show he didn't know. Lily responded in kind as she also lifted her small hands in the same fashion.

"Yes, it is wonderful to see my babies speak..." Adeline looked at her children with even more love than before.

The days passed as soon the twins were a week old.

"Come outside now, take the babies this time, it is stuffy in here. They should see what amazing land their father obtained!"

"Oh come now Edmund look how small they are. You don't know if they can even take it!" While complaining Adeline took her babies from the small bed and carried them out the door under Edmund's urging.

Lily and Ambrose both looked excited as they watched as the daylight started to near. When Adeline stepped outside the twins were now able to see the outside world clearly leaving them in shock.

Looking around they were in the middle of a forest. A large area was cleared leaving an area filled with wild grass and stumps.

Both Lily and Ambrose started looking around and moving around as if they wanted to leap out of their mother's arms.

"Oh? Do my precious babies like it?" Adeline asked with a slight smile. She wasn't expecting much as she knew how little sounds her babies made, yet to her surprise the twins both excitedly babbled as if trying to tell her how wonderful the outside world was.

Edmund burst out laughing as he puffed up his chest, "See? This is your amazing father's work! HAHA!"

Adeline simply ignored her husband's ego and kneeled down to get her children near the grass. "Do you like it that much?" She spoke in a gentle tone as she allowed them to touch the grass.

The babies responded in kind babbling away in their gibberish language as they touched the grass.

Seeing no one paying attention to him, Edmund frowned but still shrugged as he kneeled beside his wife while picking grass to give to his children.

As the family played in the grass they enjoyed their first family outing right in front of their house.

"Ambrose! Lily! Come and eat!" Adeline called out knowing her words probably fell on deaf ears. Touching her swollen stomach Adeline wondered what she should do about her rebelious children. They had recently turned three and were constantly on the move.

Ever since they learned to crawl they would go outside as if living in between the plants was all that mattered. When they learned to walk they learned to run by the next day just to reach the forest faster.

This had reached a point where she had to make a lock on the door to stop them from leaving before they even had breakfast. Even then the solution only lasted a month before they found out how to unlock the door consistently.

As for the twins, they were indeed exploring the forest as usual. Although they often had many chores to do, they would escape into the forest whenever possible. That said neither Adeline or Edmund minded too much as they often brought edible plants that could be eaten.

In this time period just not starving was considered to be thriving. Yet their family was had not gone hungry since the twins started walking. Although this was the case, the twins often brought many strange plants that the couple wondered if it were even edible.

Strangely the twins had only brought back a single plant that was poisonous. Even then the plant only made someone sick to their stomach for at most an hour. Yet that was out of hundreds of different plants before!

As Adeline was in a daze reminiscing about the past while staring into the forest she saw the grass separating. Knowing what it was she called out, "And what took you two so long!" Although it sounded like she was chiding her children, in reality, her voice showed her happiness seeing the twins.

The twins pushed away the grass as they looked to their mother holding a giant mushroom head. "Sorry mom, but we just were estimating the possible cultivation of such a mushroom."

"Yeah! And look! Look! We have a pushball mushroom! It should be edible! AND~ It has a ton of juicy flesh!" Looking at the mushroom Lily seemed to almost drool.

*sigh* "Here you are again bringing weird foods. I just hope it isn't as bitter as the last one you brought."

"Don't worry mom, we searched a lot to find this type of mushroom. But of course, just to be safe we can to a quick cook test as usual."

"Of course." Bending down, Adeline took the mushroom out of her son's hands. The mushroom was around the size of a human head. Taking it by the fire, Adeline grabbed her cutting board as she started preparing it for a future soup.

In reality, she had enough trust in her children that she believed this mushroom wouldn't be dangerous. So even though she started cooking some mushroom pieces on some sticks, she expected to eat this for the next three meals.

Although at first she was too afraid to eat the plants her children brought back, after so hundreds of safe plants she no longer worried about possible dangers. Sometimes she thought that her children were gods reborn as they knew all about different plants.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
ObsidianWolf ObsidianWolf

Originally I only thought about having Ambrose as the only main character, but I decided to give him a partner in crime. So going forward there will be just as much focus on Ambrose as Lily. Sorry for the first two chapters being a B 28-only focus.
