Chapter 12: Chapter 12 The Beacon.
It took a few hours to extract the emergency beacon from the wreck but Simon decided to be cautious as to not damage the device.
In the meantime Alesia took out all of the emergency supplies that they missed the first time and it was quite a lot of food, water and survival gear .
Unfortunately after she did the math it turned out that her supplies would run out in two weeks.
Fortunately for her she found a food scanner in her survival kit and after scanning one of the protein bars the scanner determined that it was edible for her.
She asked the humans if they would share some of their bars with her and they agreed.
That gives her hope to last long enough for the rescue team if Simon was able to activate her distress beacon.
When they returned to the Simon house she asked them about her weapons and after some explanation she agreed that it was a smart choice on their part to disarm her.
She observed the humans as they connected the cable to the fighter they mentioned earlier and it came back to life the moment the power hit the battery pack.
It was impressive in her eyes that they managed to use technology way more advanced than what they had on their planet.
It took them another three days to figure out where the emergency beacon was in the fighter.
At this time they returned to their usual routine of gathering the materials in the morning and doing the translations and other work in the afternoons.
Alesia also went with them to help with their work, in the end they were sharing what they had and even helped her with the beacon which Simon was still figuring out.
-Why do you do so much to help me?
She asked one evening when they were translating some texts.
They both looked at her a bit surprised at her question.
-We both are stuck here for a long time to come but that doesn't mean that you have to share our fate.
Mikael said, trying to explain.
-You still have a chance to leave this planet unlike the both of us.
We have 250 years at the minimum before we will be able to leave.
Simon said.
-Also there is no guarantee that you will be able to go home,it all depends on connecting the beacon to this ship, if we manage to do that then it will be just a matter of time before someone comes for you.
-No matter the result, I still need to thank you.
-Thank us when you leave this place for now i think it's time to call it a day.
Mikael said, bringing out his pipe and lighting it up.
-Yes it's getting late so let's finish it tomorrow.
Simon agreed.
After some more chatting he and Alesia went to his ship to get some rest.
She stayed with Simon because his house was bigger and she had her own cabin in it.
The next day after returning from work they once again started working on the ship.
-I did it!
Simon shouted triumphantly after three hours.
-What did you do?
Alesia asked.
-I finally managed to connect the emergency beacon to this ship and if I'm reading this correctly its broadcasting.
She took a look at the cables connecting two incompatible pieces of technology and then at the display on the beacon and she was really happy because it really displayed status:Active and broadcasting signal.
She was so happy that she didn't know what to do with herself.
Now all she had to do was wait for the rescue team.
That evening they were all in front of Mikael's house ,chatting happily about their success.
-I really don't know how to thank you for all you have done to help me.
She said for the fourth time.
-Take it easy girl, we just did what we could do and by some miracle it worked.
The old man said.
-To be honest with you,this technology is so much over our heads that it's not even funny.
Simon said, shaking his head.
-For the most part i think we just got lucky.
He finished .
-Even if you just got lucky,you did more than I ever could.
Alesia said with a serious face.
-If it wasn't for you I would probably be dead and even if i managed to survive i wouldn't be able to find a way home.
-We are both glad that we can help and it is nice to have another friend.
Mikael said with a smile.
-Also you helped us with our work so it can be said that you earned your keep.
What's more you gave us tips about piloting our shuttle so i'd say that we are even.
Simon said, smiling.
She never considered how much she had helped them but even so it was just a little help to the beings that saved her and shared what little they had with a stranger who they knew nothing about.
They also inspired her to learn more things, for instance she was now determined to learn from her mechanics so that if she ever landed herself in a similar situation she wouldn't be helpless the next time she might not be so lucky.
The one thing that she will certainly miss after leaving is the pleasure of watching her new human friends tinkering with the technology they barely understood.
-That was nothing compared to saving me.
She denied any credit.
-For us it was plenty.
-You know what is funny ?
she asked.
-It's that nobody will believe me when I tell them how you got the shuttle.
She remembered the day when they told her the reason they started this whole experiment.
She hit the floor laughing uncontrollably when she heard that they just wanted to power up a section of Simon's home to take a shower but instead they got a shuttle.
-Yea it is funny when you think about it.
Simon admitted.
-But what can we say it's a nice thing to get a hot shower and the only way to get what we want is to power up the ship.
Mikael said with a smile.
-You know old man we could probably just build one and be done with it.
Simon said.
-Yes but where is the fun in that?
The old man asked.
