YANG XIAO LONG POV
"Despite smelling of Cabbages, my grandfather was a wise man. He once told me. 'Peter-'"
She tried her best to not fall asleep as Professor Port continue to monologue on the stage.
She looked around and looked at her team mates. Blake was pretending to take notes while reading some out of course book in her lap. Nora was talking with Ren about something while Ren continued to look at Professor Port with his usual stoic and emotionless face.
Her team mates… she didn't knew what to think about them.
They were good at fighting.
No. They were not just good at fighting. They were great at it.
Back in Signal Academy, she was at the top of her class in Combat Classes and all three of her team mates were at the same level as her.
She had been lucky in that regard. She knew that. But she still hoped that her baby sister was in the same team as her so that she could protect her.
She glanced at the seat beside them and saw Ruby doodling in her notebook.
Or maybe it was a good thing that Ruby was in a different team than her own.
Such a thing would allow her to grow into her own self and make friends outside her circle.
She looked at Weiss, Ruby's partner who was currently glaring at Ruby for one reason or another. Seriously, the girl needed to loosen up a bit. Being all stoic could not be good for her.
Then she turned to look at Ruby's two other team mates.
She knew who Pyrrha Nikos was.
Mostly because anyone who doesn't live under a rock would know about the 4 times Champion of Mistral Yearly Tournaments. The Invincible girl.
She couldn't wait to fight against the girl.
Oh, she had no doubt that she would lose against Pyrrha Nikos.
She might be the best fighter in her year back in Signal but Pyrrha had defeated people 4 years her senior in a Country wide Tournament.
But she would be damned if she didn't gave the gave a huge challenge at the very least.
Then her eyes fell on John. Or was it Jon. Whatever.
She didn't like him.
Mostly because he had vomited on her shoe in the airship during their Flight to Beacon.
But aside from that. The boy also looked like a nervous wreck. And years of living and fighting alongside hunters and hunters-in-training had taught her to check the form of a fighter and see how experienced he is by the way he stands and moves.
And frankly, the boy was as inexperienced as they came.
All in all, the boy was in a word, 'Unreliable' and she wasn't very happy about him being in charge of her baby sister's team.
She had no idea what Ozpin had seen in him to make him the leader of that team.
The good news was that her sister was very good at fighting. The Schnee heiress should be good enough in a fight as well and Pyrrha was a great one so even if the inexperienced boy somehow fucks up out there on a mission, her sister will hopefully make it out alright.
Regardless, she would probably have to take him to a corner and have a 'talk' with him about not putting her baby sister in too much danger.
She was brought out of her thoughts as Professor Port finally came to the end of his 'lecture'. Thank the gods for that.
"…a true Huntsman must be Strategic, Well Educated and Wise. So, who among you believes themselves to be the embodiment of these traits. Aah. Pyrrha Nikos."
She turned to look in the direction of the Invincible Girl and saw her looking red faced while mock glaring at Jaune for some reason.
Oohh! She could sense a growing chemistry in there and her senses were tingling.
"Step forward and face your opponent." Professor Port said while gesturing at the cage kept at the corner of the room.
Oh, so that what the grimm in the cage was for. A practical demonstration. Couldn't say that she didn't appreciate breaking some grimm skulls every now and then.
Maybe this Port fella wasn't so bad after all. Though she hoped that he wouldn't wink at her again. That wink give her nightmares for days to come.
She and the rest of the class watched as Pyrrha gathered her weapons and walked down the stairs to face the grimm inside the cage.
"Go Pyrrha!" Ruby shouted from her seat.
"Good luck Pyrrha." Weiss said in a more subdued tone from her seat while Jaune simply smiled at his partner.
Pyrrha looked at them and gave them a grateful nod before Professor Port removed the lock with a "Begin!"
A Juvenile Boarbatusk covered in White Patches of Armor came out of the cage and upon seeing the huntress standing in front of it, it let out a grunt and charged at her.
Pyrrha simply side stepped the Boarbatusk and swung her sword, ripping the grimm in half.
And the fight was over.
Just like that.
Her jaw didn't drop open but it was a close thing.
There was silence in the class as everyone stared at the Invincible Girl in equal part awe and shock, perhaps understanding for the first time what the title 'Invincible Girl' truly meant.
She herself couldn't have been more shocked by this outcome.
Mostly because she had fought her own fair share of Boarbatusk before and knew how hard their Armor was.
She had no doubt that she would've been able to defeat the Boarbatusk with ease as well but it would take her a while to do so and she would've had to target it's soft spots like it's unarmored belly.
If she had tried to break it's head by attacking it's mask then she would have probably succeeded as well but it would take her much longer and she would've have to use a good deal of her aura and some of her dust as well.
The fact that Pyrrha was simply able to cleave right through the Boarbatusk as if it wasn't even wearing any armor in the first place…
She had no idea how much strength it would take for someone to do that.
The Invincible Girl was given that title because of her unparalleled skill in the arena and she had assumed that the girl would be weak. Weaker than her at least.
This… this had been a wake up call.
Pyrrha was strong. Much more stronger than even her.
And just like that her confidence to give a challenge to the Invincible girl faded away.
Her main advantage in any fight was her great strength and her semblance which gave her even greater strength.
She might be slightly skilled with her fighting style but it was nothing to write home about. And her weapons, as much as she liked them, were frankly nothing game changing.
How do you win against a foe who was not only stronger and faster than you but also far more skilled.
You don't.
Not in a fair battle or a 1v1 at least.
She looked at her team mates who looked equally awed by Pyrrha's show of strength down in the stage.
Nora had an excited gleam in her eyes. Ren was sitting straight and seemed to be staring at Pyrrha while Blake was giving her full attention to Pyrrha as well.
She wondered if her team could win a 4v1 against Pyrrha and was shocked to know that she didn't knew the answer.
Pride. It was good to have you but for now we must part.
