Chapter 1: Chp 1: First Step

"Hi, my name is Adrian Brown. I'm the fastest man alive… at least when we are talking about fixing electronics. Nah that's too pretentious" he laughed to & at himself. 'These fuckers are some of the smartest people in the nation; can't make such gaudy claims against them'.

Here is a nervous wreck of an engineer graduate, scrunchy bedhead , newly ironed shirt but over it is a jacket which has definitely seen better days , train ticket sticking out his pocket, jeans & shoes with no regard of colour matching and resume's filled bag. " Hi name my is. Fuck !"

"Are you alright young man?"

Adrian looked up to see the passenger across him, an old gray man, overcoat, glasses, newspaper, kinda looks like a professor.

"Huh? Oh yeah. Cool as a superconductor"

The old man let out a chuckle as he put his newspaper down.

"Sooo , theoretical or applied?" Adrian asked and oldie looked impressed.

"Theoretical. Specialized in new energy research. Where are you applying to?"

"Ohh ,pftt, not to brag but S.T.A.R. Labs, you may have heard of em."

"It is quite hard to miss now that they are part of the city skyline" oldie said as he pointed out the window to the towering laboratory clearly visible from afar.

"Shame that it might get pushed back a few months"

"I doubt it, people these days riot against stupid shit everyday. Dr. Wells will definitely prevail against the rumors. After all , the accelerator will revolutionize science and .. everything."

The old man stayed silent as he kept staring out the window with a somber look.

"Mister , you don't believe in those baseless rumors do you?"

"Young man, science takes time and if someone rises too fast the crowd will always try to pull them back."

"Then I'll just go even faster than the boorish crowd could ever catch up"

"Icarus too rose too fast and fell just as fast, some things mustn't be rushed"

Train announcement cuts the debate short of it's climax

"Shit that's my stop. Good day mister." Said Adrian rushing to the exit. As oldie smiled and gave him a nod.

Adrian looks up the route to the lab asking around for the bus stop. Boards the bus .

'Hi my name is Adrian Brown and I have a lot of experience with tech. Hmpf says the 22 year graduate with no jobs.' Gets off the bus and sees the building of his dreams. S.T.A.R. Labs.

"Hey kid , state your business" a voice came from below. Adrian shifted his gaze back to ground level and saw the security guard, middle aged , mustache, probably used to lift hard but has let himself go a bit.

The nervous wreck pulling out his phone almost dropping it , shows him the interview email and temporary pass. "I applied for an internship and am here for an interview."

"Let me check." The guard called up someone to check the pass status. "Yeah , some kid , uh huh, the 2:30 slot , yup" as Adrian stood beside him he got a peek of the guards cabin. Nothing out the ordinary, spare uniform, keys, coffee mug with 'dad' written on it and a family photo.

"Go in , walk across where people are prepping the event and take the elevator on the left, Sector B10. Got it?"

"Aye aye" Adrian stood with a salute, an attempt at bonding using humor. The guard stared at him , no change in expression.

"Okayy, thanks byee." Adrian rushed to the entrance avoiding any more awkwardess.

He scanned his temporary pass on the entrance and the machine greeted him, "Welcome to S.T.A.R. Labs". 'Ooh , fancy' he thought. Adrian stood there for a moment taking it in , this is his dream, where he hopes to be , achieving great things besides his heroes , scientists like Wells who inspired him. "You got this Adrian." He muttered under his breath as he walked, towards his future.
