"Lilliath!"
I stop in my track glancing over my shoulder, "Hmm?" a human jogs towards me, "Careful, you might over-exert yourself trying to catch up to me."
Stopping just short of me, "Ha," he shoots me an unimpressed stare, "New recruits rolled in just an hour or so - Knight Commander Alexandros asked me to beg you on both of my knees to attend their screening and then if any of them are up for it, break them in."
Crossing my arms with a smug expression, "Do it then."
"What…?"
"On your knees."
His brown eyes watch my face for a brief moment, he doesn't realize that I am being entirely serious about it - he curls his nose at me in annoyance, "Clever."
"You suggested it, don't be upset because I expected you to perform," then shaking my head.
"The part has been itching-"
"What sort of itch does it scratch going into a low-levelled zone with a bunch of recruits?" then narrowing my eyes at him, "Zedrick? Do you really want to inflate that ego of yours that much you want to show off to all of the recruits?" I then chuckle with my smirk, "Right on the head with that one, hmm?"
Bringing his hand to his face, he rubs out his eyes, "Lilliath-"
I sigh, "Sure. Get the other four ready, after we are done breaking them in we will be walking to the next zone to stretch our wings a bit," I lift my arms over my head, stretching them I feel a tight sensation in my chest, I suppress my moan before saying with a satisfied sigh, "Come on then."
I turn into a slow walk as he sides next to me.
"Knight Commander has been on our case for a while."
Speaking in a whisper, "He has been suspecting us for a lot of things - being the highest ranking party in the Black Sun doesn't keep us from being suspected of dismantling operations within the City. There is nothing they can do to trace it back to us other than keeping us busy and seeing if something still happens."
He snorts, "Will laugh when they realize it isn't us."
I nod, "I will meet with the Grand Magus to address the suspicion they have on us."
"Your best friend~" he sings before snorting.
He should have been dead already, I should have killed him back then because no matter how we look at it he will always be our biggest problem… it just sucks because he turned out to be a very competent and friendly human despite his status.
"He will listen to me," I reassure him.
He nods, "Who would ever want to stand against you, Lilliath? If anything they are scared that you, the third strongest in the House of the Black Sun, will eventually turn against them," he then lifts his shoulders.
"You heard about what happened with the Holy Order?" I ask him, "One of their paladins tried to kill the High King when trying to report to him with news about outside the walls - I have a strong suspicion that we might have people actively trying to destroy the Last City."
"Explains all of the Inquisition Guards roaming around lately," he remarks.
I gesture to the left, we turn into one of the roads leading from the barrack's residential area and head to the front where all of the recruits are supposed to gather. To my right is a large green field with the residential district just beyond it. The occasional lone tree scattered across the field, it would have been nice to lay under them if the sun and sky weren't dead.
I glance down at Zedrick, with long brown hair, and with a thick bushy beard. One of the few humans that are just a few fingers shorter than myself - though it isn't fair if you consider my genetics is from a, I scoff to myself, a rather favourable pool.
"Admiring me?" he asks breaking the silence.
"Nope," I answer instantly, "Just humouring myself."
"At least looking at me can make you laugh - as much as that might hurt my pride."
"You're okay," I reassure him, then returning my gaze to my front.
"Oh, I know. If you wanted to make fun of me you'd have said it already," he chuckles, then clearing his throat, "Got any plans for tonight?"
"Us as a team? Or are you asking me personally?"
"You," he says with a serious tone.
Then asking to confirm my suspicions, "You want me to come and get a drink with you?"
"That obvious?"
"Not tonight," I state, "I am in no mood being the only sober one and having to deal with your antics - on another note I have to go do something outside of the walls-"
He then grabs me by the arm, stopping me in place, "Alone? Are you insane?"
"Alone, yes. Insane? Not really. I don't plan on getting into a war with the Moon-Touched. Cyrtemis claims that there is a rift that opened up and asked me to claim it before any of the other Houses get it before we can."
He sighs, "Always staying on his good side."
His touch lingers on me, clenching my jaw I yank my arm out of his hold walking forward, "We are all fighting the same war."
"I know," he says, I can hear him catching up with my pace, "The thing is that you are always fighting it for everyone, you don't rest when you should and even when there isn't anything to fight you go out of your way to make sure there is something."
"And you don't get to decide what I need to do when I need to do it," I counter with an annoyed tone.
"Alright."
"Good boy," I muster an empty smile, then stating, "There are talks about having a Raid Party together and see how far we can plot out the dead zones - obviously they asked for us to be one of the leading teams and want us all to prepare for it within the next two months."
He then asks, "Raid Party? The biggest problem about that is having too many people willing to go - we only need a hundred and a lot of the Adventurers around here are going to throw a fit if they can't make it."
"The quota is still the same, twenty-five from each sect."
"How are they going to do that?" he scoffs, "Most parties have six people and that means letting one random person be sent with us?"
I then look at him, "Where do you think the Grand Magus of each sect comes in?"
"Oh."
"Dumbass," I roll my eyes at him as I laugh, "We haven't had one for years now."
"Would be my first time taking part in one," he admits.
"I do recall that being the case," then stating, "Talk about it later though."
We reach the front with about fifty heads standing right in front of one of the sergeants, he shoots me a bewildered look. Then glancing between the new recruits and me, he clears his throat, "Pardon me, recruits."
I walk up to him, "Don't stress about us, Knight Commander just sent us here to break in the new recruits after you are done here."
He sighs, "I was almost expecting to hear that I wasn't doing a favourable job."
I then shoot a wicked grin, "I'll make my own verdict, don't disappoint me."
He nods quickly as he steps back towards them. Zedrick snickers as he stops next to me with a whisper, "Nothing like terrorizing the ranks."
Lifting my brow with a nod, watching him go about the orientation. My gaze instantly travels to the crowd full of heads - some of them shoot the two of us a glance but quickly return it back to the sergeant after I lock eyes with them. Bunch of young and fresh faces, hopefully, we don't have an eighty percent mortality rate with this batch.
It has been getting harder and harder outside of the walls. You used to be able to go out as a level twenty and have no struggles and now…
Now…
My thoughts are interrupted as I notice someone. I narrow my eyes at the pair of grey eyes watching me, he watches me for a moment longer before returning it back to his front.
You really are still alive? I feel a smile spread across my face. I never expected to ever see you again and that the Dragon's Taint would have killed you but you truly are incredibly lucky aren't you?
And you still can't keep your eyes off of me.
