Chapter 4: The Forbes

I am the monster that you wanted me to be

But where are you now?

-

The shadow in front of me then touched my shoulder sending me back to reality; her touch, cold like my skin, seemed weightless floating on my shoulder.

"My name's Kenia", she whispered cautiously. I still wasn't adapted to her voice and appearance, hence I caught myself catching my breath. The world seemed to stop around us, the moon shining revealing our shadows in the empty room. There was silence for a couple minutes while I tried to comprehend who she was.

"Do I know you?" I responded maybe a bit too loud.

"So you've forgotten of your lovely sister, Matt?" She continued crossing her arms and shaking her head in disappointment.

"What?" I was shocked, my mouth tightened and my hands started sweating cold. I had a very bad feeling of what I was about to find out.

"Kenia Forbes?" I asked desperately.

"Mathias Forbes." She smiled as if she was looking at a relic. Her eyes softened as she walked over and pulled me into a hug. The familiar cold feeling washed through my bones, her scent reminded me of home. She really was my sister.

"You changed a lot. You're beautiful, I barely even recognized you. I haven't seen you since I was 16. What are you doing here? What about Father? And what about our younger brothers, you were supposed to take care of them.." I rattled on.

Her expression changed. My sister pulled back looking down; she spoke quietly in a hurtful manner. "Father is dead", she mumbled.

"Oh", was all that came through my mouth. Our father was exclusively better than our mother, at least he didn't humiliate us. But there's really no reason for there to be sad about his death no matter how harsh it may sound.

"The twins, Dante and Collem, killed him", she started. "I bet they learned from their big brother. Matt, they're only 12! Why did you have to kill Mother?!", she raged. Her face expression was trying to comprehend what was going on in my mind, though seconds later she frowned. Her hands were now in her pockets as she remained in a straight pose.

"You know why I did it." I sighed closing my eyes. Flashes of nightmares I've had for years reappeared in my mind. Blood, chains rattling, centipedes, rats, spiders, and those black lifeless eyes my mother had. She was beyond despicable.

"You're a monster."

"No, we're monsters. You killed that woman, remember?" I pointed at the lifeless cadaver on the wooden table across from us. It was funny to admit that I had forgotten all about her. Kenia turned around and sighed in defeat, the breeze that came from the window lifted her black coat revealing a knife in her pocket.

"Funny of you to assume, but it wasn't me." The night was getting more and more tense; I wondered if I'd ever get a break.

"Then who did?"

"Them," she said, pointing at the classroom's door. It was hard to see, hence the dim light wasn't working very well, flashing on and off.

Then, they showed. Dante and Collem.

Almost identical, their wicked smiles glowed like thirsty hounds in the night. Their blue eyes, blood covered their necks and lips.

"Big brother!", they both sang, tackling me to the floor with a hug. "We missed you!"

"Damn you two really are strong. I missed you both too, little tigers." Ever since they were born I have always called them by that nickname, they're fierce no matter their age. "Why are you going around killing people?" I wondered, still on the ground.

"Mmmm, daddy deserved it, just like mommy did. But then... we kind of liked the feeling right Col?" Dante explained, while Collem nodded in agreement. Kenia snorted, fidgeting from one side to the other.

Flashback 6 years

"Breaking news.

The known house of the Forbes was set on fire. Diana Forbes, mother of 4 has been found dead. The whereabouts of the rest of the family members remains unknown. All evidence was burnt down, the detectives unable to find the cause of the accident. Husband and children are major suspects", my father read at loud, glancing at the newspaper in front of him. My sister sat quietly next to me, tears slowly running down her cheeks.

"I had to. I don't expect you to forgive me", I retorted.

"You left two 6 year old kids, and me, without a mother. I'll never forgive you for this", my sister argued.

"Leave before I destroy your damn face, kid." My father commanded with an angry expression. I wasn't afraid of him, in fact I wasn't scared of anyone anymore. But leaving would be the best now that my mother's finally gone.

"Yes sir. Kenia please take care of our twin brothers, and of our father for me. And..", I shrugged with a smirk on my face. I turned around, and finished my sentence. "Enjoy your freedom".

I left before anyone responded, but as I made my way out of the old building whose roof was just about to collapse, I saw a reflection of my mom with the corner of my eyes. Her eyes, red and swollen, looked at me with great fury, as she whispered my name silently, her hands on her chest from a grand wound covered in blood. Then as I tried to continue walking I was forced to stop and lean against a weak-looking wall. Though as I pushed my body backward, it was sent farther back into the ground as the wall collapsed. Had I looked at the wall twice I wouldn't have rested on it. Now on the floor, flashbacks of my mom's atrocities infuriated me.

I remember two years ago, when I told my mother about my crush on Eli, she threatened to kill her. I realized months later that she only hoped for my unhappiness. In an effort to change her mind, she made a deal, and that's when the tortures got worse, most of the days I was forced to miss school because of the many bruises and scars that covered my skin afterwards. I had agreed to kill Eli when I turned 18; which I never planned to do, but it was enough to please my mother. Of course I wasn't the only one getting tortured, my baby brothers, Collem and Dante, had it worse for they enjoyed painful lashing and surprisingly enough they were very tolerant to cobra venom. One day, my mom violently slapped Dante on his face because he wouldn't stop crying, and while she tied him with chains, she brought out two wires. My sister, scared from my mother's actions, tried to help Dante escape though she was electrocuted instead. Had I known sooner, I wouldn't have taken so long to kill my mother, and in place, my father's business was to heal us from any crucial injury so we wouldn't have to go to the hospital. He is just as much a maniac as my mother; his appearance only worsened when he tattooed my mother's name with huge letters on the back of his neck. What kind of twisted family had I grown in?

Standing up from the fall, I reached for my pocket and opened a pack of cigarettes that I always kept to calm my anxiety; I started smoking when I was 12, and my mother always burned my arm when she saw me but I never minded it because I thought it was my bad attitude that made her mad. I guess deep inside I never had much people to look out for because of my trust issues, truly I only trusted my family to take care of me. As I smoked, I enjoyed the head rushes that I still experienced even after some years.

Finally, I focused my thoughts on Eli and carried on my way to find her. I had planned to go to her house and talk to her but since the police are now looking for me, I'll have to be more careful. I'm going to confess my love to her, and she'll fall in love with me like she said she would a year ago.

I walked through the streets of New Jersey, heading for the subway. My mood now recovered, helped my body function better. A traffic light in front of me switched from green to red, indicating pedestrians to stop, but that didn't stop me from crossing the road.

"Are you fucking blind?!" Yelled a young man with a blue Yankees hat while he honked on his black Maserati. Calmly I continued to jay-walk, while the man cursed all kinds of things to my mother. Ironically, this made me laugh and made me almost cry of laughter. I stopped, in the middle of the road, while more cars behind the black Maserati shouted that they needed to get to work.

"Why don't you run over me?" I joked, and then continued walking. The young man then accelerated and only the sound of birds was heard.

When I arrived at the subway station, I noticed that I was miserably broke, when I had fallen through the wall, I didn't realize that my wallet fell too, so I was walking without any identification or money. Though, if you live anywhere nearby my neighborhood, anyone would just assure you that you're fine, after all it's very easy to sneak through the queue. With just a jump I was already on the other side, but I hadn't checked if there were any cops, which I then realized, there were.

"Hey! You! Where do you think you're going thug!" That's all I heard, before a train arrived and I successfully escaped in the old-looking train.

Now as I headed to New York, I sat down by an empty seat and pulled my hood up just in case anyone could recognize me. I hadn't minded then that I was wearing a Metallica hoodie until I realized it was too small on me, though my only option was to keep it, since the shirt under it was covered in my mother's blood. Luckily enough, my phone still remained in my short's pockets, though there was no line, music would make the trip much more enjoyable.

I puggled in my earphones, and closed my eyes. Before I noticed, I drifted to sleep.
