After I hung up from Kelly, I dialed the phone again.

“Lycia? Is that you?” Mom answered on the first ring.

Tears filled my eyes at just the sound of her voice. “Yes, Mom. It’s me,” I replied, my voice thick with emotion. “I just wanted you to know that I’m okay and that Logan and I are getting married this Saturday night.”

There was silence at the other end.

“Mom?” I asked as Logan let out a deep breath, shifting his weight beside me on the bed while studying my face. “What’s wrong? I thought you’d be glad I was alive, at least.”

“Yes, I am,” she said flatly. “Of course I am. Just be careful. Logan Kahn is a very dangerous man.”

I let out a deep breath. “Mom, will you come to the wedding?”

“Yes, I’ll be there,” she replied. “I’m sure your father would be delighted to walk you down the aisle—”

“Mom, I don’t want him to come,” I replied. “He willingly sold me off to pay his debt. Even though I’m happy now, it’s something I can’t forget or forgive so easily.”
