Most people who play games may be familiar to the term prestige but to those of you who aren't I'll give you my understanding of it. To my understanding to prestige is to reset your progress in a game but in doing so you also get a benefit in doing so such as permanently unlocking a weapon and it's attachments or making your base stats go up by a percentage. This will allow you better progress into becoming more powerful before the prestige.
The further you progress in a game the better rewards one will usually receive such as a better permanent stat upgrade. An example of this in numbers may look like
lv 1 no prestige str 1
lv1 1st prestige str 3
Finally getting to the story implication of this idea. So far I've only seen this used once in a light novel titled "I kinda came to another world but where's the way home" and would like to see more like it.
Anyways this would go well with a MC in a fantasy setting with what most likely would have a system with a set max parameters like the max average for an average humans strength in this world would be something like 100 but they wouldn't always get to their max possibility for their stat. If you want to take this idea you can implement this without a system but it would most likely be harder to do. A possible way you can do this is by having the mc find out about this ability by happenstance through a near death experience. This prestige could be implemented with timy wimy messes but it might complicate the plot to much. To add on to the systemless prestige you can make it so the mc gets better understanding of how to accomplish their goals such at getting instinctively better at combat.
This skill is more tailored to stories with a system and in the fantasy gene but if you are creative enough to make it work with out such tags then good on you :)
What are you doing still reading this the chapters over
