Chapter 10: 10: Patrol
"You've been sighing." Plagg comments on Adrien's gloomy look who had not been moving from the matress.
The moment Adrien finished his dinner, he went back to his room and threw himself to his bed feeling lethargic not wanting to get up. The boy couldn't get Marinette's words off his chest, and seeing Luka pick her up made it worse. It felt like a bruise that occassionally gets bump on and it hurts. Like accidentally putting alcohol on a wound you never noticed that existed.
"I don't know what's wrong with me Plagg." he mumbles, "I know Marinette meant it because she wants to be a good friend to me but..."
"But it doesn't feel right." Plagg finishes his sentence while nibbling on his cheese.
Adrien rises up and sits at the edge of his bed feeling stuck in a rut. "I don't get it. This is no time to be having mixed feelings. I should be focusing on Kagami. And I should most of all understand what Marinette's intention is."
"The girl respects your private life, Adrien. You should be thanking her." he said swallowing his last bite of camembert.
Adrien stares at his kwami with lonely eyes.
"Oh come on, don't look at me like that. It'll make me want not to leave you alone tonight." Plagg complained.
Then Adrien's emotions shifted. He realized how Plagg has been out and about for the past few weeks only coming home at dawn.
"You're gonna leave me again huh?" Adrien made a pouty face.
"Hey! Don't make a sad face." Plagg flew closer to Adrien.
"You've been so attached to Ladybug that you barely stay with me now. Even when I've provided you with so much camembert." he looks down playing sad.
Plagg scoffs, "Me? You make it sound like I've been cheating on you."
"Aren't you?" he replied with puppy dog eyes. Adrien knew Plagg hated it when he does that.
"Oh come on Adrien!" then Plagg thought of something, "FINE. To make it up to you, I'll grant you one command or request. Name it."
Adrien's eyes lit up, "Really? Then can we play this one game that I recently learned?"
"Okay? What is it?"
"So lately at school Nino taught me a trick on how to clear your mind and make a decision without second thoughts. He said he learned it from this one show that was aired back in the 90s and is proven to work."
"Okay, so how does it work?"
"All you have to do is to quickly answer my question with whatever comes in your mind. You ready?"
Plagg thought how simple the game was. Maybe the kid was just so lonely that he wanted to play it with someone. Obviously he can't play it with his bodyguard or his father. Who else can he count on but Plagg. The black kwami felt proud.
"Alright! Game!" Plagg exclaimed.
Adrien switched his foot to a better position as he and Plagg stared intently at each other.
A: Cheese or Gelato
P: Cheese!
A: Dog or Cat
P: Cat!
A: Blue or Green
P: Green!
A: Paris or London
P: Paris!
As the game went on, Plagg did feel a lot relaxed. He thought how smart of Adrien to play this game just before he heads out and be exposed to the cold again.
A: Which continent is China part of?
P: Asia!
A: What are you doing so late at night?
P: Patrolling Paris with Ladybug!
They both fell silent. Plagg's eyes widened realizing what he just blurted out. The kwami covered his mouth feeling stupid for saying such a big secret. Adrien's jaw dropped.
"YOU HAVE BEEN PATROLLING PARIS WITH LADYBUG? SINCE WHEN?" Adrien exclaimed.
"Dddd'oooohh!" The kwami made inaudible noises of his frustration.
Plagg tries to calm Adrien down then tries to calm himself down then goes back to Adrien and the cycle of panic and disorientation goes on, "Listen, Adrien you have to calm down. I can explain."
"So that's why you've been coming home so late. No, not even late, you come home just before I wake up! How could I be so clueless?!" Adrien stood up and walked around his room feeling betrayed by his own partner. "I cannot believe this! Since when?"
"Since that time your father found out about that Kagami girl...." Plagg said softly.
"That was weeks ago! You couldn't even tell me? What am I? Aren't I Ladybug's partner?"
Plagg finally gathered his wits back, "Adrien, you have to understand. She's been so stressed lately. She feels like she's carrying Paris on her shoulders all by herself." Plagg explained. You could hear his deep concern for Ladybug in his voice.
"Then why won't she ask for me? I'm here also ready to protect Paris. Am I not that easy to confide on?" Adrien said almost crying.
"Because she fears that she might make another mistake and would end up putting someone in danger just like what happened with Master Fu. She said until an akuma comes up, that's when she'll call for you." Plagg declared intensely then realizing how tough Ladybug can be, "But I do feel that even when an akuma comes up, she'll try to battle it by herself."
Adrien fell silent watching his kwami explain.
"And and, she's been worried sick how there's been no akumatizing for weeks now. She fears of what Hawkmoth is planning especially with how he used Chloe and the miraculous of the bee before." Plagg recovers.
"But she's out there all alone in the cold of the night, wasting sleep." he spoke softly feeling sympathetic towards Ladybug. Then it hit him, "Isn't she a student too? It's a school night!" he said looking out the window.
"School night or not, Adrien, the girl's got guts!" Plagg shrugged.
The two of them looked down. Plagg thinking how screwed he is when Marinette finds out he just told Chat Noir about her secret rendesvouz at night. And Adrien thinking of how stupid he could be for not realizing how Ladybug has been so hard on herself for being the new master.
"I have to see her Plagg." Adrien begged.
Plagg knew he wouldn't be able to convince the kid not to, but it's time that these two need to talk. They're having a crossfire in their lovelife and hero life without even seeing eye to eye.
Plagg nods and surrenders himself ready for whatever happens.
"Plagg, claws out!"
