Isabelle managed a wan smile. "I..."

She hesitated just a moment. But. That man held up his end of the bargain. If she wanted to work with him, and maybe he was the only way to succeed, she needed to hold up hers.

And if it turned out to be a waste of time, she could tell Caleb later.

It wasn't like it could waste her time more than just wandering aimlessly as a maid had been.

"Fell." She gestured vaguely back into the tunnel. "I got a little too ahead of myself and fell."

That wasn't even a lie. She definitely had tripped. She just left out the part about the falling revealing a secret tunnel and her probably looking even worse because she'd then run from someone in those tunnels.

His lips pressed together into a thin line, eyes scanning her. "Where did you fall?"

"The passage. About halfway?"
