Chilla Ruins: the first stone
-
Their flight seemed longer than usual, though it wasn't. That probably had something to do with the unnatural silence that persisted throughout the day. Then there it was, Chilla, off in the distance, its ruined walls shining in the evening sun. It looked as a great beacon of light, simply breath-taking. They landed within the ruins. Cecealye began to stare off at the many broken-down structures. She stood as though she were a statue. She could feel her stomach knotting up and she was starting to feel light-headed when she realized she was forgetting to breathe.
Ean came over to her from behind and wrapped his strong arms around her, steadying her. "Deep breaths, remember, deep breaths ... this isn't Ellizea, nor will Ellizea ever be this."
She closed her eyes and leaned back on him, concentrating on those deep breaths
Blaizen leaned over to Supreany and whispered, "Does this really look that similar to Ellizea?"
"It does. It really does," she whispered back.
She wouldn't have believed it if she had not seen it for herself. Just then, she noticed something as she looked back over to Cecealye and Ean. She believed that was the saddest she had ever seen Ean. It was such a sorrow that seeing it made her sad. He loved Cecealye so very much, no one could question that. But what Supreany saw in that moment beyond that was that he loved Ellizea just as much as Cecealye did. He loved her, and so loved the things that she loved.
In that moment, she wondered if she would ever be so lucky to find a man like that. Just then, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked to see Blaizen.
"Maybe we should give them a minute," he suggested. Orckle, Blaizen, and Supreany began setting up camp and not too much later, everyone was in bed.
Supreany laid wide awake that night unable to sleep. There was something about this place that unsettled her. But not in the same way that sleeping next to the marshes did. It was a different, strange feeling. Unable to lie there another minute, she rose and decided she would go for a walk. She slowly paced away from the camp. About fifty feet away, she climbed up on a ruined wall and gazed at the stars for several minutes.
"Hey," a light voice came from below her. At first, she was startled, but then saw that it was Blaizen. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," he said as he began to climb up the wall to sit next to her. "What are you doing out here?"
"Can't sleep."
"No, I mean, what are you doing up here? ... Come on, you've been acting strange all day. Is it because of Ellizea?"
"No ... it's just this place, I'm frightened. But not for the usual reason. I guess I'm just scared of the unknown and the unanswered questions ... Who am I? I'm just some street orphan. Why is it that I'm the only one who can read that stupid scroll, and why can't I remember anything?"
Looking at her, she looked smaller than usual. He lifted his left arm and wrapped it around her shoulders. "It's okay to be scared of what you don't know; just don't let that fear rule you." A moment of silence passed.
"Were you frightened when you left your world and came here?"
"Yeah ... I was more scared then than I've ever been in my life."
She pulled away from him, causing him to let go. "What happened?"
"Well, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and I witnessed the assassination of a very important man. I escaped from the scene and those who were responsible for it framed me. It's a lot easier to find someone if everyone thinks they're a murderer, especially if he's already an outlaw as is."
"So, what did you do?"
"I ran to the one person I trusted the most, my big brother. He was a soldier in the special forces and had access to pretty much everything. He helped me to get that spaceship I crashed in. It was a one and only prototype. With that, I could travel faster than any other ship out there. The plan was for me to lie low for awhile and come back later." He shook his head. "My brother is going to be forever waiting the return of a man he'll never see again."
She didn't know what to say. She felt for him and his loss. But in that instant, she knew she would be very sad if he ever left to go back. "I know that this life could never replace the one you once had, but hopefully, through your new friendships, you will one day find crashing here worth while."
He smiled over at her. She could be really sweet when she wanted to be. "I think I already have."
She smiled and looked away. "For what it's worth, I do feel much better now. We should probably go get some rest before the night's over with."
"Oh, I suppose you're right." He climbed back down the wall and then helped Supreany down and walked her back to the camp. "Get some rest, all right?"
"You too." After some time, she finally fell asleep.
