Chapter 13: Empress Dowager
I swallowed my spit, afraid of meeting Weishang's mother. "Bai and Ai, escort me towards my room" I said as I walked towards them. They nodded and we went to my room. I got towards my bed and sat down in a hurry.
"Tell me this isn't happening" I said, looking at them both. "Well sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but yes this is happening" Bai said, stating the obvious. "Stop remaindering her about that. She looks scared as it is at the moment" Ai said as she sat down next to me.
"Well suck it up. You're the empress for crying out loud" "Well she is the Empress Dowager, a position above me and has more say than I do" I said looking at them with anxiety around me. I felt myself become dizzy. "Empress….. EMPRESS...Hie-.." everything went black.
"My dear…" a voice said as I felt my consciousness being regained. I whimpered as I lost the slight touch. "Stop being a baby my dear and wake up for you mother" the voice said. I slowly opened my eyes and saw my mother and Lianhua Zhanfang were hovering over me.
"Are you okay my baby?" my mother said as she pulled me up. I nodded and dusted myself. "What is happening?" I asked as she guided me towards the patio. "Well for one your mother-in-law is in town and secondly, apparently she brought a 'bride' for her son as well" Lianhua said, pouring some tea into a cup before me.
"What?" I said looking at Lianhua. "You heard me loud and clear. What I can tell you is that be careful. I saw her coming a mile away and she is trouble. Now finish your tea, you need to get back there" she said. Mother kissed my temple as I finished my tea. "Don't forget about what I have asked you" she said. I nodded and felt myself falling.
"She will be fine, nothing is wrong with her" someone said as they examined me. "When will she wake up?" "I think right now" the voiced replied to the other. I groaned and opened my eyes slightly.
"My love, say something" Weishang said. "Water" I whispered silently. He nodded and got me a glass of water from Bai.
"I thought something was really wrong with you" Weishang said as he sat next to me on the bed.
"Nothing is wrong. I'm just a bit exhausted, that's all" I replied. He nodded and dismissed everyone.
"Ai, please get my wife something to eat and Bai please get her some tea" "As you wish" they both said, leaving the room tensely.
"So my mother has returned from her trip" he said as he kissed my palm as he held me close to his chest. "I have heard. What does she bring to you from her homeland?" I asked him as I got up a little more.
He cleared his throat and looked away from me. "Tell me Weishang" I said, putting a bit of boldness in my voice. "She brought me back a wife. I had not sent her any consent of this" he said as he looked at me.
"Ok" I said as I got off the bed. "Does this trouble you?" he asked as he followed me towards the lounge chair. I shook my head and looked towards him. "I know you weren't expecting this. I don't blame your mother for bringing you a wife. If you had not met me, would you even get married?"
"I wouldn't. Every one of these women expects one thing and one thing only. They want the title of being the empress from marrying me. With you, you didn't realise that I was the emperor. Your aura gives off a very pure and powerful sense and it brings me closer towards you" he said, while looking towards the door as Bai and Ai came back.
"Well, where is the food?" Weishang asked them. "We were about to get them when the Empress Dowager told us to tell you that she wants both of you to come down to dinner" Bai said, looking down. My heart rate speed up as my nerves began to kick in.
Weishang nodded his head and stood up. "Come, let us go have dinner with my mother my dear" he said, giving me his hand. I slowly took it and stood up as he guided me towards the door of my room.
We walked down the hall and downstairs towards the dinner hall. The room was grand, grander than the main hall. I kept my composure as we got the table. "My son, it's a pleasure that you have decided to join us" a woman dressed in a golden robe and ornaments in her hair.
By her side was a girl, dressed in a green hanfu. Her hair was loose and simple. She had beauty, but her beauty had a story behind her. She looked up from her plate and stared at me with her black eyes.
I felt my body shiver as I gazed away from her. "Apologizes mother, I had to make sure that my wife was well" he replied as he sat us down. "You're what?!?" his mother squealed. The girl that sat next to looked towards his mother.
"Mother, please calm down. This is my wife, Hien Lixue" he said gesturing towards me. I bowed slightly. "Greeting Empress Dowager" I said silently.
"So you go behind me and got married without my consent I see. I told you that I would be bringing you back a suitable wife and you go ahead and marry someone else" she said as she stood up and gathered herself. The girl also stood up, waiting for the Empress Dowager to walk first.
"Please try to understand, I didn't need your help with finding a wife. You just insisted if you came across a girl that might make me happy that you would bring her here" he told her, his voice becoming more aggressive.
"How dare you talk to me in that manner? I'm your mother Weishang, show some respect" his mother spat out as she left he dinner hall. Weishang gripped the chair with a force, breaking it in the process. Bai and Ai gasped as I looked towards Weishang with a worried look. He got up and walked towards the door. "Bambang, please follow him and make sure he does not do anything irrational" I said. Bambang bowed and followed behind Weishang.
I got up and looked to both Bai and Ai. "Can you guys please take me towards my father's house?" I said. They both nodded and we all walked towards the door, leaving the castle for a brief moment.
