Chapter 5: Her Smile
They both stared at each other and their faces kept getting closer. They were just inches away from their lips touching, when someone barged into the room.
Zuri and Xavier backed away from each other immediately and pretended to be doing their own thing.
It was Michael... and from the look Xavier was giving him, he knew he had interrupted something.
"I am very sorry for not knocking... you guys can carry on what you were doing"
Michael sounded sarcastic and Xavier gave him a deathly stare,
"What do you want?"
"oh, I wanted to remind you about the family dinner tonight"
"I'm busy..."
"You never come for any family events... do you not love your family",
Michael spoke audible enough for Zuri and kept glancing towards her... probably wanting Xavier to look like a bad person.
Both Zuri and Xavier, ignored Michael and continued with the check up.
However, Michael refused to leave and waited for her to be done. Soon she was done with the check up and was walking out with a straight face when she turned around to look at Xavier.
"I think you should go... not everyone has a family to go home to"
"see... ice que... Zuri agrees", Michael smiled wryly.
"okay I'll be there", Xavier reluctantly agreed.
Zuri smiled a little and left the room. When she was gone, Michael let out a screeching sound,
"now I see why you can't get your eyes of herrrrr, that smile can make a cripple man walk again",
Xavier hit him on the head and pulled his ears,
"If you look at her again, I'll break your bones"
Michael looked like a scared cat and hurriedly nodded. Xavier let go of his ear and added,
"and besides, the smile is for me and me alone", he had a proud expression on his face.
"not just you, there's her parents and that her friend too", Michael mumbled under his breath.
"What did you say?"
"it's nothing... as you said the smile is for you alone"
Xavier knew he was being sarcastic but he didn't mind... as long as he heard someone else say it.
"oooh... goddess!!!", Michael was staring at his phone lovingly.
Xavier smirked and dragged the phone forcefully out of his hands to see what he was looking at.
"so this is the goddess you keep talking about, uhn what's her name... chandelier... pack?",
Michael was pissed and took his phone back,
"Her name is Crystal Parker, the least you could do was get her name right"
"sorry not sorry"
Michael rolled his eyes and continued going through his phone. He then looked up at Xavier was sitting on a chair with his eyes closed.
"you know, you're lighter now... like your temperament"
"Oh"
"That is all you can say?"
"What do you want me to say then"
"Nevermind... I just hope she's the one"
Xavier sighed, "me too"
He opened his eyes and looked at Michael who was still staring at his phone.
"Why don't you meet her... I mean, you actually can so why not"
"I'm nervous i guess"
Xavier burst out laughing until he was almost crying,
"How is that possible... you're you"
Michael looked at him and pouted,
"Like you're not nervous when Zuri's around"
Xavier stopped talking and sank back into the chair, closed his eyes and kept thinking of Zuri.
"Okay, I'm off... see you at the dinner"
Xavier's eyes shot open and he had an irritable expression,
"ugh, you had to mention it when she was here, just to make me go"
Michael just shrugged,
"oops, my bad", he then ran out.
Xavier and Michael had always been very close. After his accident, Xavier became very distant and irritable because he couldn't remember anything and he felt useless.
It was only Michael who stayed with him, despite his character and endured everything with him.
He supported him when he started his business, shared his burdens and did everything to make him feel comfortable and better and forget the past.
Speaking of the past, although he had not remembered anything before the accident, he kept having dreams about it.
He was crossing the road when someone called him but he didn't hear his name or the person's voice. He just felt like someone called him but when he turned, he was suddenly hit.
After that he heard ringing in his ears and blurred vision. Eventually he entered an abyss of darkness.
Xavier started clutching his head, he was in pain. That voice... he was hearing it but didn't hear what it called him.
He started seeing images but they were blurry. He felt himself hugging someone and feeling secure. It seemed like the person wasn't very accepting of it but he still loved it.
Slowly his head stopped aching and he was covered in sweat.
He knew it was his memory and he hated himself for not remembering anything.
Xavier grabbed his chain, wore it and calmed down. He went to lie down on the bed facing the ceiling.
He kept touching the pendant of the chain.
" 'Z'... for Zuri?... nahhh, I would've remembered if she was part of my past... I just wish she was"
Xavier decided to start preparing for the dinner.
