Chapter 23: Ch. 23 - At The Hospital

It was a fancy hospital that Claire had booked Millie into, a private one with walls that weren't pink. I normally take my mum to a public hospital for her check-ups, and it looked absolutely ancient by comparison.

I stood for a moment in the lobby.

It was so quiet, not just noise-wise but busyness-wise too. None of the nurses moved at anything faster than a professional walk and even the reception area was calm.

I wondered who was footing the bill for Millie's stay here.

It wasn't… me, right?

I went to the front desk.

"Hello, how may I help you?" the receptionist asked. She had a mask on, but it didn't conceal the genuine smile on her face. I started to suspect this wasn't a hospital at all but something else masquerading as one.

"Uh, hi, I'm here to see…"

"Lachlan!"

The receptionist and I both turned to find a woman striding toward us from the elevators. It was Claire.
