Chapter 40: The Bracelet of Escape & Immortality?

"Hmm," murmured Aurelius.

"What's up, Aurelius?" asked Nagini.

"The bracelet of escape seems to ignore the aspects of distraction," I said aloud. "There are a couple of spells that I'm not sure if they exist or not, but it doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult to create solely for the purpose of distracting, allowing for a cleaner escape without detection."

"First off, the bracelet of defence's time dilation bubble allows for the apparition to happen before it can be perceived by the outside world, so that by itself is already super valuable, but there are times that we just need to get out without the express purpose of apparating out and just get to somewhere undetected."

"All right, I'm following. So there are a few ways I can think about doing this. So you pull attention, remove sight, or remove their ability to respond," she said in response.

"Exactly. So I'm going to make what effectively is the wizard equivalent of a flashbang, and as the name suggests, it's a small explosion of sound and light that is incredibly disorienting. Then a smokescreen to hide our actions," I said before getting interrupted.

"Wouldn't that make it more difficult to use disillusionment because the smoke would move around when you exit the cloud of smoke?" she said, confused.

"Dang, I was thinking too much like a ninja. Scratch that. A house-elf summoning charm to apparate you out, a focus director spell to draw someone's attention elsewhere, and an unlocking charm in addition to the other stuff," I said.

"Okay, let me get this straight. So you want to have a ward destroyer, a conditional immediate apparition activation, apparition, disillusionment, notice-me-not, silencing, revulsion, physical enhancement, some new spells called flashbang, focus redirection, unlocking charm, and elf notification apparition," said Ann.

"Good names, anyway. First off, all of these will follow the immediate use of the time dilation bubble of the defence ring. Due to the time difference and perception of time, you could effectively apparate out before they could detect you had left already. Here are the conditions and combos I want us all to learn: first, if the apparition is attempted and if it fails, detect and destroy the anti-apparition ward, then immediately apparate afterwards. Two, contact a house-elf using the elf notification apparition charm to tell them your location and get them to come in, grab you, and leave. No conversation, just action. Three, if you are trying to slip past, use a combo of disillusionment, notice-me-not, focus redirection, muffliato charm, and silencing, to become completely undetectable by sight or by someone tracking the magic cast. Fourth, should you be detained using something like handcuffs or rope, you should use the combo of physical enhancement, silencing, and revulsion to remove any form of bindings."

"What about the flashbang?" asked Martha.

"To be honest, I threw that in because I felt like it, but it might be overkill; however, I think it would be a great engagement or disengagement tool, so I was wondering whether I should put it into attack or escape, or perhaps both," I said.

"I think you should put it in both so there is no confusion about picking the wrong one," said Nagini.

The others nodded in agreement.

"Okay, well, you can really choose to throw it in whenever you feel like it, before or after, but ideally whenever you need to create momentary chaotic confusion," I said with a shrug.

"Makes sense; if we get apparition, will it even be necessary for the house-elf?" asked Martha.

"Well, I thought if we are ever indisposed, like we're near exhaustion or don't have the mental capacity to think, then it would be best not to apparate on our own. I don't feel like having one of you with a foot splinched. While it is fairly mendable with potions, I think it's best to avoid that if possible," I said while my mothers nodded aggressively to that grossing thought.

"Is there a potion for that?" asked Nagini.

"Now that I think about it, I don't think so," said Ann.

"There is Skele-Gro and the Wiggenweld Potion that heal and regrow stuff, but I don't think there is one that is a fix-all," said Martha.

"I think you guys are right. I don't think any potions can heal entire limbs. Just grow components. Well, that makes it even more important not to," I said.

"Perhaps that should be your next project," said my totem guardian.

"Maybe, but from what memories of the contents of the vault, there are some potions that are powerful enough to do what is said, but those require a large amount of salamander limbs and blood to make even one," I said.

"So try making one that is nearly as potent but doesn't require as many materials," said my mum, Martha.

I looked at her incredulously.

"Mum, making something at the same potency as that isn't that simple. It would take a week just to come up with a viable formula and then months of testing various ingredients to test the thing and more months to fine-tune it," I said to give her the bigger picture.

"Aurelius, she just said make it happen, not that it had to be done right away or that you had to be successful. Just that you should try to make one with those conditions," said my mother, Ann.

"Okay, okay, that's fine. I'll think about it, but I'm unsure if I can. The contents can vary and I'm unsure if they'd be on the right track without guidance from a potions master," I said.

"That's fine, just paint the picture of what's needed," she asked.

"Any healing, regrowing, and manipulation require components to heal, reshape, and redistribute nerve endings and different muscle tissue. The healing can be done using basic forms of healing components, a catalyst that strengthens the effect, and a binding agent that causes the components to synergise rather than be a mixture of various healing ingredients and then give the potion specific instructions, so to speak, or basically what component it interacts with, in this case, muscle tissue, blood vessels, and the nervous system. Then it requires limitations on how far it can go with it, which typically relies on the recipient, so a simple form of DNA such as their blood, saliva, or hair would be sufficient as the guidelines. Then it requires us to heal the individual components simultaneously so the recipient's bones, blood vessels, and muscle tissue will all have to grow at a similar rate to avoid any misalignments. Luckily, muscle is more forgiving, so it's fine if the bones grow slightly after the muscle and skin, but only slightly," I said, voicing my thoughts aloud.

"Okay, that's a lot. Is that everything?" asked Martha, who was more familiar with human biology.

"Not sure, but it's a start. I'll have to consult a trained healer and a potions master," said Aurelius.

"How long do you think this would take?" asked Martha.

"Not sure; it could take a few months to a couple of years to test and create a viable option that covers everything and have it be near the same potency as the original," I said. "Is this really necessary? It seems rather redundant when things like salamanders are regularly in a surplus, at least for the larger variety; the smaller ones don't produce as many, especially in captivity," I said, feeling an unnecessary weight with such a task that had only minimal benefit.

"Well, if you deem it as excessive, I guess it doesn't really matter enough, but it's food for thought," said Martha with a shrug.

"Either way, after this summer, challenge yourself by expanding on what you've already learned. This potion that you've created for eyesight is perhaps the first step of many," she said.

"I was thinking about a challenge, or rather the ritual," I said.

"What about it? Do you no longer want to go through with it?" asked Ann.

"No, it's not that, but rather I was wondering if it was possible to be biologically immortal," I said.

"Biologically immortal? How? And how is that any different from being immortal? And that seems rather extreme; immortality means forever; while I wouldn't mind enjoying our wealth and the luxuries it affords us, I don't feel keen on living for the rest of eternity," said Ann.

"Well, biologically immortal just means that time can't kill you; you are still very much mortal. As for how, I was thinking about creatures that are biologically immortal both in the wizarding world and the Muggle world. This would include both the phoenix and the immortal jellyfish discovered in the 19th century and the relatively recent discovery of telomerase, which has dictated the ability to allow the division of cells without any backlash," I said.

"So you want to duplicate these effects by using the materials in the ritual?" asked Nagini.

"Pretty much, but I'm not entirely sure. The thing with both pseudo-immortal beasts is that they revert back into a child either gradually or instantaneously, but regardless, they will become a child again. I don't think any of us are keen on becoming children after adulthood," I said.

"Hmm, I don't know. Being a child again doesn't sound so bad; a lot less responsibilities then," Ann said with a chuckle.

"Well, to be fair, that was primarily social, political, and financial responsibilities. But given our new status, wealth, and political power, we won't have to do anything we don't want to," I said with a shrug.

"Hmm, that's a good point. Once you remove all the excess responsibilities involved with being an adult, you can behave like a child if you feel so inclined without the limitations placed on a child. And since we would be technically still adults, the responsibilities of an adult would still be pushed onto us, so I'd rather be an adult. I wouldn't mind having the metabolism of when I was a teen, though; far less constriction on what I can eat, but if I eat poorly, it will reflect on my body, so not like I can just eat junk food," said Martha.

"Okay, so it's best to create a ritual that allows us to remain at our peak would be far preferred," I said.

"Alright, anyway, that's enough thinking. We have the plans; let's get to the creation of these accessories," said Aurelius.

They go through the motions of creating and testing the accessories' effectiveness and see how well the combos can be executed, but as far as they can tell, no issues have occurred that couldn't be ironed out with practice.

Another day comes and goes while enjoying new cuisine and creating new accessories.
