Chapter 42: Chapter 41: Backstory ridden in regret [Daisy 1st Person POV]

It was a day like any other. I was helping sweep the floor with my mom when my dad returned. He was a hunter and hunted/got rid of any monsters nearby.

"How's my amazing daughter and wife!" He grabbed us both and spun me around.

"I helped mom clean!" I squealed, as we sat down to eat. During that time there was peace in the village with almost no monster attacks despite the fact that we lived in a forest that was highly populated with animals.

"I was out fishing with Obadiah when I caught a fish that was this big!" I marveled at it before, but that was the very same day that I would only be able to remember that day with regret. When I was sure everyone was asleep I snuck out to meet my friend, Marleen. I grabbed some stuff and went to our secret spot to hang out. It was really just a hollowed out tree that was still standing which we both thought was cool. The flooring was grass, but it was fine.

"May, are you sure we should be going today? My dad said that the monsters have been a bit more crazy." If only I had listened to my dad that day..

"Don't be such a baby. I have something to show you!" When we arrived there was a tiny black dog with red eyes eating some food. It ran up to May and licked her face, as I felt a bit scared. The dog probably felt that and slowly crept up to me. I started to pet it, as it licked my hand. We played with it when my gut started to wretch. May had cut her hand on a branch, so I went over to her.

"Ouch!"

"Don't worry I can heal it!" It took almost all my Mana, but I managed to stop the bleeding with my magic.

"My hero! Thanks, you're such a good healer!" Back then, I was incredibly horrible at healing despite it being my speciality now. I was tired, but drank some apple juice before sitting down on the grass outside the hideout. While we stared at the stars with our new dog, I heard a low growl.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?" I looked behind me and saw a hellhound. Its red eyes shone in the darkness, as it lunged at May. She was impaled by claws, as she bled profusely. I felt immense fear, as the dog went back to its mother. I swear that I could see a smirk on its face, as I ran away with May on my back to a nearby hilltop.

"It..h-hurts…"

"Y-You're gonna be okay…you're going to be…okay…" Tears stained my eyes, as my vision blurred while I limped towards the village. I looked down to see the entire village on fire, but something distracted me...the cold body of May. I felt May stop breathing. I laid May down and looked to see her eyes giving off a terrified expression. The image of her face remains in my mind to this day. I left her and ran to my house. I saw my mom barely holding on, as a green aura flared from my body. I tried my very best to heal it, as my mom's breathing relaxed. I didn't dare stop until I was almost out of Mana again, as I felt a sense of relief pass over me.

"I…did it?" I looked down to see my mother's hollow eyes and unmoving body. I saw that her massive wound had only been closed ever so slightly. I couldn't do it…I failed to heal her at all…that day the green aura around my body increased, as I felt plants grow around me. I looked down and immediately fell unconscious. I was found by a group of adventurers and went from job to job working as anything from a monster skinner to a tavern waitress. I worked a bunch of odd jobs and after 6 years I met you and after another year met everyone else. I still have nightmares of that moment…I wasn't good enough as a healer before and this time I wasn't a good enough fighter….at this point just getting everyone around me killed.
