How it starts

Gazing at the sky as he lies on his back, he quickly got up and looked at his surroundings. Seeing an endless field of grass expanding far beyond the horizon, he couldn't help but think how he got there. The last thing he remembered was...well, nothing, he didn't have any memories to look back upon, no faces or places he could remember nothing. It was an extremely peculiar feeling. He knew things, but he couldn't remember where or when he learned them. Letting his eyes wander, he looked towards the sky, noticing the orange hue it was taking, he knew the sun was setting, yet he couldn't find the ball of flame anywhere. His confusion peaked as he tried calling out to the endless expanse only to find he couldn't produce a sound from his throat.

Fear took the place of confusion as he tried calling out again and again, but his attempts were fruitless as the non-existent sun began to set and nightfall took its place. Sitting down on the grass, he failed to comprehend the situation. Where was he? Why can't he remember anything? And why couldn't he speak? These questions swarmed his mind, and it seemed like he couldn't do anything to answer them.

Standing up from the soft grass, he put those questions to the back of his mind as he observed what little he could about himself. From what he could observe, he adorned a peculiar set of clothing. He was wearing a plain black tunic that fit him comfortably, catching a strange tear at the abdominal area. It seemed that something had stabbed or pierced that spot. Unnerved, he focused on the next garment that attracted his attention. Somehow he failed to notice it earlier, A dark green cloak adorned his shoulders. It seemed it had been used thoroughly as it had quite a bit of wear and tear. Finding nothing else interesting about the cloak, he focused his attention on his bottom half. Only finding some simple brown pants and a pair of black shoes. After observing the attire, he failed to find anything interesting about them. Although he didn't know what his face looked like, he made a guess and assumed he looked like someone who lived in a forest. Perhaps he did, but even after observing his clothes, he still couldn't recall any memories, much to his dismay. Finding no other items of interest on his person he looked toward the starless night sky, finding the sight unnerving. With nothing else to do, He started walking in a random direction with the slim hopes of finding something other than grass.

He walked till the light overcame the dark and the non-existent sun rose. To his surprise, he didn't get tired or seem to need anything to sustain his body with food or water. He entertained the thought that he was dead, and this was some sort of limbo, and the more he thought about it, the more convincing it was. Shaking his head, he put it to the back of his mind and continued to walk for what seemed like hours before he stopped.

He had had enough. He didn't care if he was in hell or some sort of nightmare, he wanted to leave. It was this thought that sparked change, as the sky blackened and his sight was impeded by a thick fog that appeared out of nowhere. instinctively, he got into a guarded position as he slowed his breath, waiting for something to happen.

"You're quite a cautious one hmm? Though, I can't quite blame you," A voice...or voices, suddenly sounded from within the fog. It was like a dozen different people speaking in unison. "Although we haven't met for long, I quite admire you already," the voices giggled after seeing his stance. He tried to speak, but once again he couldn't produce a single sound. The voices laughed again "you can not speak? This is normal after first entering my domain, don't fret. Here I will give you the gift of voice. Use it wisely."

Following those words, He could feel something gently grip his neck. It felt like a hand, but he could not see anything there. It was a brief sensation, and when it was over, the voice spoke again, "How about it? Feel anything different? You should be able to speak now."

"I...Hello?" he tested his newly acquired voice. discovering it to be surprisingly young. No older than 20, he assumed.

The voices laughed joyfully, "perfect, haha! Now it's certain you have questions but let me explain a few things, yes?"

He looked around the thick fog and slowly nodded, unsure of the situation but willing to let the voices speak.

"Perfect. Now, I have a lot to tell you, so you should mentally prepare. Ready? Ok, first off, introductions. Hello, I am the deity of travelers, wanderers, the lost, and sacrifices called kalvera, A pleasure to meet you. You, my new friend, are one the last surviving members of a race called otherworlders, more on that later, and your name has been forgotten, lost to time. As you can probably tell by that cut in your shirt, you had died. Killed in fact, by ones you called 'friends'. I, kalvera, had intercepted your soul from ascending to the afterlife to give you another chance at life as long as you abide by a few rules. If you say yes, I'll grant you life and a few other gifts, but if you say no, I'll send you to whatever heaven you believed in. What say you?"

The amount of information rattled his mind as he thought hard about it. There was truly little to no reason to refuse, and his curiosity gnawed at him. But still, he had to play it safe. "I still have many questions. Before I give you my answer, I need some of yours," he said.

The voices-No kalvera laughed as they said. "truly you are one of a kind to say something like that to a diety. I must applaud you. Sadly I don't exactly have arms to clap with right now. Sure otherworlder, ask your questions."

"Thank you. Uhh... Well first, what is an otherworlder? and why are they nearly dead?"

"Otherworlders were a huge group of humans that came to the current world by somehow ripping a portal into space and time. It is said they came from a war-ravaged world with barely any resources. Out of the millions that entered the portal, only around 120,000 of them lived. They have an extraordinary aptitude for magic and invention but are poor on physical strength. Though not all of them were like that. They were mostly a pacifists race with limitless talent and potential. It was these attributes that got them killed. A mixture of fear, pride, and many other nonsensible emotions triggered the native races of this world to war with them. In the end, it was quantity over quality as the remaining otherworlders were hunted to near extinction. Quite sad, isn't it? to escape out of a war to find yourself in a new one..."

Hearing this, he had more questions. He was about to ask, but Kalvera interrupted him, "Yes, magic. You'll learn more about that when you descend. Speaking of which, I'll tell you more about the world you'll head to if you accept my offer. The common name is Aegisfell, and there are a few different nations and countries you should familiarize yourself with. I won't tell you any more than that. Sorry"

"Alright, well, I still have questions."

"And I have till the end of time. Ask away."

"Why have you chosen me? Besides being an Otherworlder what's so special about me?"

"let me put it this way, otherworlders live a LONG time and are extremely cautious, sooooo after the mass genocide and huntings they don't often die. You were just unlucky enough to do so. It's not your fault, as in life you were unaware of your lineage, so you had no idea people would be after you. And before you ask. Yes, you died to those you considered friends. They got close to you only to stab you. Such is the way of despicable humans. Anyway, that's all there is to it on why I chose you. An otherworlder that died"

He nodded solemnly, "I...have just one more question. What are these rules that you want me to follow?"

Kalvera laughed, "I thought you would never ask. They are quite simple. 1. do not tarnish my name 2. Do not commit any crime without proper justification, and 3. travel often. Do not stay in the same place for years, like say a city. You can own a home you can live in for the rest of your life but don't stay there for more than let's say...3.5 years at a time. That's fair right? This rule is flexible, of course. Simple right? A rule of three, three rules for the gift of life."

"that is quite simple...I was expecting something more strict."

"Does that mean you accept?"After organizing all the facts, he couldn't find a reason to say no. His curiosity was greater than ever, and it seemed the only way to appease it, is to accept.

There are a few concerns but ultimately..."Kalvera. I accept your offer."
