Chapter 1: The Poor Boy Who Stumbled.

Ma and Pa always told us to stay away from the abandoned church down the street. Multiple ghost stories and scary monsters said to live there, even guards and most bad people scared to visit!

Of course being 9 and a bit on the rebellious side, me and a couple of my friends gathered together to go there tomorrow night.

We of course came prepared with torches and just in case we saw a monster, a dagger that Jimmy took from his dad's adventuring bag. He had a cool dad.

Rumour had it that the church had been there before the town was even built and no one could topple it or remove it. Even a Arch Mage came by a few years ago and tried to teleport it away! It was awesome but it failed to. So they built around as the city was in a super perfect area to settle.

Being on the edge of empire control made it easier for people to live since the tax people only visited twice a year.

On to our Journey though!

It was just pass curfew and near midnight when we all snuck out of the houses. Planning perfectly for when either are parents decided it was time for another brother or sister, or out for adventuring or trading as it made more money. Just Ma or Pa would be gone for weeks at a time.

The old church was made out of the gray stone that most everyone's houses in the city were. People said it was weird since we only did wood and mud before I was born. Weird.

"Alright guys! I will take point since I have the weapon!" Jimmy, the leader of my friends and me said. Julie nodding along with Tyler. Jimmy never seem to notice Julie liked him. I even heard my parents say he was oblivious? Whatever that means.

"I got the torch!" Tyler held the unlit stick with a soaked cloth around the top. We waited to light it until we got inside as we did not want the adults to see us.

Passing the rotting and old wooden fence we looked around before quickly dashing to the front double doors. The left one looking as bad as the fences and even pushed open slightly.

Being small we squeezed in to the gap as we lit up the torch. The dark room lighting up as we looked around. Broken wooden pews lining the sides of the middle walkway that led to a stone pedestal.

Farther behind it and to the sides being stairs that led up to the second floor where a balcony was. "Wow.." We all gasped. Slowly making our way towards the elevated area where the stone pedestal was.

"I dont see a book.." Jimmy said

"Maybe it was taken?" Julie added.

"I bet it was a cursed Demon Book!" Tyler said confidently.

We all kept looking around and found wood, stone, and what use to be a candle holder. Though it was rusted and after poking it with a stick a palm size spider scurried out. Causing Julie to squeak and Jimmy to wildly swing his dagger at the thing.

The spider not caring in the least as it disappeared in to the crack of a wall away from us. "You guys were to loud. What happens if the adults hear." Tyler spoke in a stern whisper.

We all nodded before we decided to head upstairs as we checked everything we thought was interesting down here. The minute we were half way up the stairs was when we all heard the shuffling of feet on wood above us.

All of us stopped and held are breathes. The footsteps disappearing a eyeblink later.

Julie had a scared look along with Tyler. His hand was shaking causing the light from the torch to wobble. "Come on guys. Let's keep going! Maybe it was a rat or something?" As children are imaginations were what kept us from being spooked and kept us moving.

As we looked out in to the new room as we walked to the top. A big hole to the right of showing the first floor where the pedestal and pews were. "I did not see that down there.." All of scratched her head as we walked farther in. Books lining old shelves on the walls along with a desk near the back. Two doors to the immediate left of the stairs no doubt leading to the balconies.

Another gasp as we all quickly walked forward and crowded around a shelf. Jimmy putting away his dagger as he reached up to grab a book.

It was like what Ma and Pa had. A leather bound book that was painted a dull gray like the stones of the houses. Only when it was grabbed a whole bunch of dust came off covering most of us.

He dropped the book and the loud thud in the silent church made it sound like a firework went off. All of us stilling as we watched with eyes widened. It was then we heard the footsteps again, only the sounded like someone was tapping on the wood. Shivering with fear we looked everywhere for the sounds until it stopped again.

"Hey. G-guys how about w-" It was then we heard Tyler scream. The sound of something piercing flesh as liquid sprayed over us all. Turning we were all frozen as a scythe like appendage had cleaved Tyler in half.

A monster like no other hanging from the now noticed, unnaturally dark ceiling. Julie was the first to scream as the torch hit the ground to break the silence, her loud footsteps attracting whatever monster was up there as it Scythe hand shot forward and bisected Julie.

Guts and her dress parting ways as Jimmy pulled out his dad's dagger and charged forward. Tears and snot running down his face as he attempted to strike at it. Only to trip over the book and miss. The dust covered tomb shooting forward near the hole that showed the first floor.

Sadly..Jimmy did not make it. I backed up slowly the whole time and stared in horror at the scene before me. My legs shaking and tears poured down the edge of my eyes as I tried not to make a sound or sob.

Only it did not help as I got a full look at the monster. The appendage slowly moving towards me as a insect like spider with scales and tentacles stared at me with its dozens of eyes. Glowing Green. It was over. I knew it.

I should have listen to Ma and Pa and never went in here. Everyone knew Monsters were real only you never saw them inside the city since Adventurers and Guards killed them on sight. Even magic was used to prevent them from getting in.

The scythe like leg now that I saw the whole thing then shot towards me. I screamed, then tripped over the gray tomb from where I was walking backwards.

The leg missing me but still cutting in to my shirt and removing a whole chunk of my shoulder. Blood and what looked like a white stick could be seen as if looked down at my fall and my shoulder.

I fell what felt like forever, sobbing uncontrollably all the way until I noticed that I was on a white floor. My blood painting it crimson as i shivered. I felt cold..tired as i attempted to look around me. My eyes blurry as dark brown shapes and colorful things adorned the walls. "W-w-what.."

I was scared, I was in a unknown place with maybe another monster. I did not want to die, I wanted to be a adventurer, I wanted to meet my new sister when she was born..

But I was so..so..tired...
