Chapter 116: Chapter 116: Preparing for War

The next few days were a blur of activity. The slums, once filled with fear and uncertainty, now buzzed with the energy of people preparing for what they knew was coming. Barricades were reinforced, weapons were distributed, and the community began to take on a new shape. Cole's leadership, alongside his crew, gave people the hope they needed to keep pushing forward.

Everywhere Cole went, he could feel the tension. People were tired, but there was a sense of determination that hadn't been there before. They had won a battle, and though they knew the war was far from over, they were ready for whatever came next.

Cole found himself walking the streets more often than usual, talking to the people, making sure they were prepared. He passed groups of fighters sharpening their makeshift weapons, barricades built higher than before, and the faces of people who had once been terrified now looked to him with something close to confidence. It wasn't that they weren't scared—they were—but they believed in him. They believed in the cause.

"Everyone's looking to you," Lina said quietly, walking beside him. "You know that, right?"

Cole glanced at her, his face unreadable. "I know. I'm just trying to make sure they're ready."

"They are," she replied. "You've done more than enough. Now, we just have to wait for the city to make its move."

He stopped walking, turning to face her fully. "And if we're not ready? If they hit us harder than we expect?"

Lina met his gaze, her eyes steady. "Then we fight like hell, just like we've always done."

Cole nodded, though the weight of what lay ahead pressed heavily on his shoulders. He had fought battles before—countless ones—but this was different. This wasn't just about him or his crew anymore. This was about an entire community, people who were counting on him to protect them.

"Do you ever wonder if it's all worth it?" Cole asked, his voice low as they continued walking.

Lina raised an eyebrow, surprised by the question. "You doubting yourself?"

"Not doubting," Cole replied, shaking his head. "Just... thinking. We've fought so hard, and it feels like no matter what we do, there's always something else coming for us. I'm not afraid of the fight, but sometimes I wonder if we'll ever really win."

Lina was silent for a moment, considering his words. Then she smiled, a small, knowing smile. "We already have, Cole. Look around you. These people—they're standing up for themselves. They're fighting for something bigger than survival. That's not something you see every day."

He looked at her, his expression softening slightly. "Maybe you're right."

"I'm always right," she said, her voice tinged with humor. "And don't forget it."

---

As night fell, Cole gathered with his crew at the safe house. The mood was tense but focused. Ty had been out gathering intel, and he returned with grim news.

"They're moving faster than we thought," Ty said, tossing a map onto the table. "They've got reinforcements coming in from outside the city. They're setting up staging areas on the outskirts, probably waiting for the signal to move in."

"How much time do we have?" Maria asked, her voice tight with worry.

Ty ran a hand through his hair. "Maybe two days. Three at most."

Zack leaned forward, his hands resting on the table. "So we're going to hit them first, right? Take out their staging areas before they can get organized?"

Maria shot him a look. "We don't have the numbers for that, Zack. If we go out there, we'll be walking into a trap."

Zack shrugged. "Better than sitting here waiting for them to crush us."

Lina spoke up, her voice calm but firm. "We need to be smart about this. We're not going to win by going head-to-head with them. We need to use the terrain, make them come to us on our terms."

Cole, who had been silent, finally spoke. "We'll set traps. Slow them down, make it harder for them to get through the slums. Ty, I want you to set up teams at key choke points. Zack, you and your team will handle the eastern side. We'll keep them guessing, keep them spread thin."

Zack grinned, clearly eager for the fight. "Now we're talking."

Maria nodded, her mind already working through the logistics. "We'll need supplies—gasoline, explosives, anything we can use to rig the streets."

"I'll handle that," Ty said. "I've got a few connections who can get us what we need."

Cole stood, his jaw set as he looked around the room. "We can't stop them from coming, but we can make sure they don't take the slums without a fight. We've done this before. We'll do it again."

There was a murmur of agreement from the crew. They had been through hell together, and this was just another battle in a long war. But this time, it felt different. This time, it wasn't just about survival—it was about taking a stand.

---

The next morning, the streets of the slums were alive with activity. Cole's plan was in motion, and everyone had a role to play. Barricades were reinforced, traps were set, and supply caches were hidden in strategic locations. People moved with purpose, knowing that the city's forces were coming but determined to be ready when they arrived.

Cole found himself on the roof of a building near the center of the slums, overlooking the preparations. From up here, he could see the entire neighborhood—the place he had fought so hard to protect, the place he had grown up in. It wasn't much, but it was home. And he wasn't going to let anyone take it away from them.

Lina joined him, standing quietly by his side as they watched the people below.

"You think this will be enough?" she asked softly.

Cole's expression was unreadable as he stared out at the slums. "I don't know. But it's all we've got."

She nodded, understanding the weight of his words. They had done everything they could, and now, all they could do was wait.

"You've come a long way, you know," Lina said, her voice gentle. "From the streets to this... leading a revolution. Not bad for a guy who used to think fighting was the only way to survive."

Cole chuckled, though there was no humor in it. "I guess I didn't have much of a choice."

"We never do," she replied, her gaze distant. "But you've done more than survive, Cole. You've given people hope. That's something."

He didn't respond, but her words stuck with him. He had never seen himself as a leader, never wanted to be the one people looked to for answers. But somehow, he had found himself in that role. And now, with the city bearing down on them, he had to be the one to keep them all together.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the slums, Cole took a deep breath. The next day would bring another fight—maybe their hardest one yet. But they were ready. They had to be.

Lina placed a hand on his shoulder, giving him a small, reassuring smile. "Whatever happens, we'll get through this."

Cole nodded, though the tension in his chest remained. "Yeah. We will."

---

That night, the slums were eerily quiet. The preparations were complete, and now all that was left was the waiting. The air was thick with anticipation, the kind that made every sound seem louder, every shadow seem darker.

Cole lay awake in the safe house, staring up at the ceiling. His mind raced with thoughts of the coming battle, of the people who were depending on him. He couldn't afford to make any mistakes. One wrong move could cost them everything.

"Can't sleep?" Lina's voice broke the silence. She was sitting by the window, watching the empty streets below.

Cole sat up, running a hand through his hair. "No. Too much on my mind."

She gave him a knowing look. "We've done all we can. Whatever happens, it's out of our hands now."

"I know," he replied, though the weight of responsibility still pressed heavily on him. "But that doesn't make it any easier."

She stood and walked over to him, sitting down beside him. For a moment, they were silent, the tension between them giving way to a rare moment of calm.

"You've got this," she said quietly, her hand resting on his arm. "We all believe in you."

Cole looked at her, his expression softening. "Thanks, Lina."

For a moment, the weight of the world seemed to lift, if only slightly. They sat together in the quiet, the calm before the storm, knowing that tomorrow would bring another fight. But for now, they had this moment. And in a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, that was enough.
