Her heart seemed to have stopped beating. The words her stepbrother had just spoken pierced her heart. Not an insult, but Efran conveyed what Zack said.
Jade doubted that her father would stay away from her for a while. For some reason, she was sure that Zack would stay away forever.
"Why didn't he call me if he didn't want to see me?" Jade asked.
"He still needs time, Jade. I'm asking the same thing."
"What about your mother?" Jade asked.
Efran shrugged his shoulders. "Mom looks relaxed. There's absolutely no fear in her. The only one who looks panicked and scared is your father."
At least her family wasn't afraid of her, that was Kate. Although not in the same blood, but that was what she needed so that she felt not alone.
"Don't think too much about your father. As Shane said, he just needs time to accept you. And you also have to prove that you won't harm him," Efran said supportively.
