Violent magic surged through the air.
Annie, with her eyes tightly shut, was floating unconsciously in midair.
Her body and hair began to grow at an astonishing rate. In the blink of an eye, she transformed from a frail girl into a tall, long-legged woman with waist-length hair.
Her silky, jet-black hair cascaded down her back, and her figure became full and curvaceous, with a slim waist that looked as though it could be encircled by a single hand. The once knee-length red dress now barely covered her thighs, revealing smooth, shapely legs.
Annie, now wearing a pair of red shoes, descended slowly from the sky and opened her eyes. Her once gentle gaze had been replaced by a deep, dark look, brimming with destruction and hatred.
With a wave of her hand, terrifying magic erupted.
The werewolf charging toward her was immediately frozen mid-air.
"Just a mere beast." she sneered.
With a casual twist of her wrist, the werewolf's body contorted and twisted, as if wrung like a wet cloth.
"What's happening to Annie?" Rod raised an eyebrow, sensing something dangerous about her now. She gave off an aura akin to the power he felt in the early morning, when his abilities were enhanced by the sun's strength.
This level of power could easily erase the entire Mushroom Town from existence.
"That's not Annie—it's Anna," the mad grandmother suddenly interjected, her usual crazed eyes now filled with solemnity.
"This is her older sister, or more accurately, her second personality."
A second personality? Rod found it hard to wrap his head around.
Typically, a second personality forms only after severe emotional trauma or mental anguish, as a way to escape reality. But Annie, with her lively and cheerful demeanor, didn't seem like someone who had gone through such hardship.
"Our family descends from a long line of witches," the grandmother explained, noticing Rod's confusion. "Every woman born into the family will eventually awaken to the witch's power in their bloodline."
"The power of a witch is inherited through blood. It's wild and chaotic. If one can't control it with reason, their personality becomes extreme and unstable."
"Annie's mother went mad and took her own life because she couldn't handle the chaotic magic within her."
Rod stroked his chin thoughtfully.
The witches' power was inherited through blood. It didn't need to be passed down or honed through practice. As they aged, they would naturally awaken to and master it. However, the power was violent and unpredictable, often affecting their mental state. Only women could awaken to the witch's power.
Though it was formidable, the side effects were daunting.
By comparison, a mage's power came from their own cultivation and meditation. While the process of gaining power was slower, it was much easier to control.
"What's going on with Annie, then?" Rod asked, his curiosity piqued.
The mad grandmother's face darkened, and for the first time, a flicker of fear crossed her eyes.
"Her bloodline is the strongest our family has seen in centuries, even surpassing the ancestor of our line."
"On the day her mother died, Annie was emotionally shattered and awakened her witch powers. She was only eight years old then, but the entire town was destroyed because of her awakening."
"Unable to cope with the trauma, Annie's personality split. All her negative emotions fused with her witch powers, creating the second personality—Anna."
"Her power is too overwhelming, so she spends most of her time in a dormant state, unable to manifest for long…"
The grandmother's voice trailed off, her expression grim.
