Chapter 9: The Unthinkable Happens - 3

Carl Hart got to the slides and began to frantically look around the place. He saw some shoes that belonged to children younger than his daughters – which Carl would pick up, examine and drop back onto the ground once he'd determined that they were not his twins'.

"Where exactly did they play?" Carl asked Michelle without looking in her direction.

"That one…"

"Where were you seated?" Carl asked as he went to the particular slide that his wife had pointed to.

"That chair over there…"

"You were pretty far away, Michelle," Carl said.

"So now you're blaming me?" Michelle asked. "I knew this would happen! I knew you would eventually say that it was my fault. In fact, it came a little later than I had expected, " Michelle spat in a venomous tone.

"You're an insensitive jerk..." she added. "Just so you know."

Carl didn't respond to her as he looked around and found the place that was labeled 'Restrooms'. He arranged his jacket and strutted to the place. Carl's heart was slamming against his chest as the worst kind of thoughts began to creep into his thoughts. He pushed the door of the restroom opened and saw how they had partitioned the rooms for males and females.

Carl didn't think twice. He opened the one that was for the females and checked two separate rooms that were there. Carl searched thoroughly that it was left for him to uproot the toilet seats. If he could do that, he would have just to check if his girls could be there.

Then Carl got into the male section and did the same thing. At this point, he was also looking out for children's shoes that were of his children's age and anything that belonged to Kim and Kendra.

Carl was unsuccessful in his search. His heart rate had not slowed down one bit. He was even beginning to feel like he could go hysterical at any moment but Carl tried to hold it together.

He came out to the field and saw his wife standing near the slides.

Michelle was just looking around and weeping. The crying didn't stop for her. Somehow, deep down, she felt responsible for what had happened.

"Let's go to the police," Carl said as he sniffed. His eyes had watered and he didn't even realize it.

Just when he was about to pass another exit to the car park area, something that was on the ground caught Carl's attention. Where they were now was north of where they had parked and they would have to walk in a semi-circle to get to where the car was.

Carl left Michelle without uttering a word and with his brows creased, he went to where he'd seen something out of the corner of his eyes.

Kim and Kendra's hair ruffles.

Carl bent over without touching them at first as he was in a state of shock. Then after some seconds, he squatted and picked them up. He could recognize them even with his eyes closed because he had been the one that had bought them among the gifts that he'd given on their 5th birthday.

Carl's face contorted as if he was about to burst into tears but he sniffed again and stood up with the hair ruffles in his hand. Carl kept staring at them, then he peeled his gaze off his hand and looked around. It was as if he thought that they would be somewhere around there.

"Kim?! Kendra?!" Carl yelled about three more times while walking around the car park. Then h stopped for a while and took a long breath in.

"Where are my daughters, Lord?" he said under his breath. "My girls… where are my girls? Where could they be if not here? Oh, Lord! They are babies! Where are my babies?"

That was when Carl broke down and sobbed into the angle of his elbow. However, that lasted for about three seconds as he wiped his face and walked directly to his car. Carl didn't even call out to Michelle to alert her that he was leaving.

But Michelle was already in the car waiting for him to return from wherever he had gone to.

"Where did you go?" she asked.

Carl didn't respond. He slid the key into the ignition and turned, starting the engine. Then he zoomed off in a rough manner and Carl never drove like that.

In about twenty minutes, Carl was at the Drasetult Hill District Police Station and he got into the station looking around like a lost man.

"I need to talk to someone! I need to speak with someone now. Please!" Carl said in a loud voice.

His tall and built frame caught the attention of many of the officers there and he was quickly answered.

"Good evening…What do-"

"My daughters…" Carl said, cutting off the police officer that had approached him.

"I do not know where they are. They were taken from the park! My daughters! We've gotta find them right now!"

The officer put forth his hands as if to calm Carl down. "This way please…"

"There is no time for documentation or whatever you wanna write…" Carl said. "Get some of the men let's go to the place where they were last seen.

"It doesn't work that way, sir. You have to calm down," the officer said.

"Calm down, you say?" Carl asked with an angry look on his face as he shifted the weight of his foot from one to the other with his hands propped on his waist.

"This way…" The officer signaled as he walked to an empty chair and desk. The officer took a seat and pulled out his little jotter and a pen.

Carl sighed and shook his head from side to side. He bit down hard on his lower lip as he tried his best to control himself. What they were doing here was a waste of time as Carl was of the opinion that time was of the essence. If his girls were being taken away or transported somewhere and they moved now, there was a possibility that they would be found. If patrol officers on the roads were alerted about the abduction, they could intercept the culprit that evening.

At least, that was what Carl thought.
