"Isn't it simple enough?" Henrik shot a glare at her. "You're not allowed to use magic to kill them. This would deflect suspicion..."

Eve blinked in confusion. "What?"

"If you use magic, people might—"

"Do you believe I'd go so far as to kill them?" she interjected.

"Didn't you consider it?" he shot back.

Well, she did believe that death was too merciful. Why should she end their already pitiful lives? Wouldn't it be better for them to endure more until they finally succumbed?

"No," Eve replied. "Living is punishment enough."

"What does that mean?" he queried, arching an eyebrow.

"Being alive is punishment enough."

He observed her for a moment, his eyes narrowing, then grumbled and turned his back to her.

"I never desired to harm them," Eve confessed.

"That woman sold you into—"

"It wasn't all bad," Eve interjected. This time, Henrik said nothing and just continued his work.
