Chapter 3: To Amberth

The trip to Amberth, it wasn't too bad. Although I do recall Ash had some... unfortunate encounters during the trip but he has no one to blame but himself for those 'encounter's' and no matter how much he complains I will be telling this story and it will be told and passed down for generations to come.

Yes, no matter how much he begs and pleads, I do hope his wife and children read this if they are alive, I can't remember.

The house had nothing of note in it and the cemetery even less so we left the house without much fanfare.

All I needed was clothing and Ash had a small cart that followed him around. Magic was not this common when I was alive.

I asked Ash about the cart and he mentioned that it was a very common item in this day and age. It couldn't carry much and it only followed its owner around but it was still a very useful tool.

I was honestly impressed, in my day we just carried everything around or had a horse pull a cart.

At first, our trip was as uneventful as trips go. We walked the road, passed some small towns, and I watched Ash sleep at night. I know how it sounds, but I still hadn't figured out how to sleep or shut down? I wasn't sure if zombies even could sleep.

I told Ash about this slight problem and asked him about it. I also asked him how I could walk around a no one freaked out by the fact that I was a pale giant with white hair following a tiny dirty necromancer around town.

Right, and why was he a tiny dirty necromancer?

"Well, I don't think I'm tiny... or dirty for that matter. Yes, my robes aren't the best but for now, I cant replace them. Also, these robes were owned by a very powerful necromancer that was born even before you ancestor! I paid a premium for them just to summon you." So basically he used all the money he had to buy those robes owned by a dirty old necromancer and for some reason doesn't have any other clothes.

"And regarding your other two concerns, it's very simple. Zombies can sleep, well sort of sleep anyway. But I'm not a zombie so I don't know how and why would you if you don't need to? About you walking around a town, it may be strange but you don't really look or act like what a regular person would think of like a zombie." I see so I may be tall and pale but it's not like there are no tall pale people in the world. Especially in the very dark and cold north.

We had passed two villages which I didn't even bother to remember the name of and were about to reach the closest town to the city of Amberth.

I can't recall what the town's name is and when I ask Ash he won't tell me because he's pouting regarding the story.

So, for now, I'll call it The Town.

The town was quaint and small. As soon as we passed the wooden palisade a townsman noticed Ash's magical cart and pointed us towards the nearest merchant. that's when I learned that although these carts aren't all that special they were mainly used by new or poor merchants.

Ash seemed to have foreseen this and asked the townsman where the nearest inn was.

That's when I felt it for the first time. I now know what it is that I felt but at the time it was a new feeling. If I had to describe it sticky would be the word I would use, a nasty sticky feeling. But this nasty sticky feeling was very attractive, and it made me hungry!

Once we reached our room in the inn I told Ash about it. I didn't think it would be a good idea for Ash to not know that the zombie he had risen suddenly felt hungry. Although I didn't like the kid much he was my descendant though and I didn't want to suddenly lose it and eat him.

And so I told him.

"You're hungry?"

"Yes."

"Zombies don't eat."

"I thought so too."

It seemed Ash was as confused as I was, but clearly not as concerned.

"Well, you don't seem to want to eat me right? Where's that hunger targeted?"

He was right, although he stood right in front of me the thought of taking a bite never occurred to me.

"Now that you mention it, you're right. Although I did consider taking a nibble it doesn't feel appealing. My hunger must be targeted at that sticky feeling from that man that was glaring at us from the gate." Just thinking about that feeling made me want to rip that mans face off and eat it!

"Thank you? I'm not sure how to feel about that but alright. Did you get a good look at him? Although strangers aren't rare here most people would stare at a pale giant and his merchant friend."

I thought it then, and to this day it still bugs me how Ash was never concerned about anything. Even the concern he showed for his 'family' looked rehearsed.

"I'm going to go look for him, and maybe eat him." I threw that last bit in there just to see Ash's reaction. As expected there wasn't much of one. What goes on in that strange head of his I will never know.

His only reply was to lay down on the bed and give me a thumbs up.

"Have fun."
