Azar's Gift-Chapter 18: Echoes of Chaos
---
As the remnants of the creature faded into the wind the dust began to settle leaving behind only the cracked monolith and a faint hum of lingering energy. Jarecs hands shook as he pushed himself up from the ground still feeling the pulsing aftereffects of merging with Velaris.
"That was something" Jarec muttered as he wiped the sweat from his forehead. The chaotic energy still coursed through his veins, though its intensity had lessened.
Velaris now fully formed beside him hovered silently. His golden eyes shone brightly but his usual playful arrogance seemed subdued replaced by a more serious demeanor.
"Its not without its risks Jarec" Velaris said in a voice softer than usual. "The power we wield in our merge is not merely a tool. Chaos is unpredictable and if you lose control it could consume us both."
Jarec nodded still processing the experience.
"I felt it too" he admitted. "That moment when I unleashed the power it was like teetering on the edge of losing myself."
As Velaris came closer there was a hint of warmth in his eyes. "Thats why you need my help. With time you'll learn to control it but remember that chaos always comes at a cost."
The weight of Velaris words hung in the air, as Jarec contemplated a whirlwind of thoughts racing through his mind. What had they awakened within themselves? And what price would chaos demand from them? Just before Jarec could respond Tharion approached with a mix of concern and curiosity etched on his face. Aureon his towering golem like companion stood silently behind him, its glowing runes dimmed yet still vigilant.
"That was... quite an event," Tharion said in an even tone. He glanced at the shattered monolith before turning his focus back to Jarec. *"I've never seen such power before. Not even from the most Gifted individuals."* Jarec shifted uncomfortably under Tharions gaze. *"It wasn't just me,"* he replied gesturing towards Velaris. *"We joined forces. Velaris guided me through it all."*
Tharions eyes glimmered with comprehension but a hint of wariness clouded his expression. *"Joining forces with your Con is a risky move, Jarec. Only a few have dared to try it and even fewer have lived to tell the tale."* He paused for a moment studying Jarec closely.
*"Nonetheless I must confess it turned out to be quite successful. You saved us all."*
Jarecs gaze drifted towards the remnants of the monolith. There was something about it that still felt unsettling as if the lingering presence of the shadow had not been completely eradicated.
"I have a feeling this isn't over," he said softly. "That creature… it seemed like just a part of something much bigger. There's more to discover here."*
Tharion nodded, in agreement. "You're right. This wasn't an occurrence. The monoliths are ancient – even older than the realms themselves. If this one has been tampered with then a far more malevolent force is at play."
Just as Jarec was about to ask more a cry shattered the silence. Ulla hurried towards them her face pale and filled with distress. *"Mina – she's gone!"* Ulla exclaimed her voice shaking. *"I can't find her anywhere!"*
A wave of despair washed over Jarec as he recalled Mina storming off earlier, upset after her encounter with Velaris. He had held onto the hope that she would find her composure and return on her own but now a sense of unease gripped him suggesting something far more serious had transpired.
"Velaris," Jarec murmured turning to his companion. "Can you sense her?" Velaris closed his eyes and twitched his whiskers as he reached out with his awareness. After a moment of stillness his eyes snapped open revealing a look.
"She's nearby... but something feels off," Velaris responded with a tone.
"There's another presence with her. Something dark reminiscent of the shadow we fought."* Jarec's heart raced.
"We need to find her—right now!" Without hesitation the group set off in pursuit of Velaris leading them through the dense forest. The air grew colder and the once vibrant foliage around them seemed to wither as if tainted by the same malevolent force emanating from the monolith.
Deeper in the woods Jarec couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. Shadows flickered at the edges of his sight and the sound of a twig snapping sent a shiver down his spine. With each step the atmosphere became heavier almost suffocating as if the very air was thick with darkness.
Eventually they stumbled upon a clearing where Mina stood alone with her back turned to them, enveloped in an unsettling light. Yet something felt off; her stance was tense and her movements appeared unnaturally stiff.
"Mina!" Ulla exclaimed hurrying towards her. But just before she could reach Mina Velaris swiftly blocked her way.
"Wait a moment," Velaris murmured squinting his eyes as he assessed the situation.
"Something isn't right. That's not Mina." Jarecs heart raced as he scrutinized the figure more closely. Velaris was right. The energy surrounding Mina was tainted by the same dark force they had sensed near the monolith. And then as if sensing their presence Mina slowly turned around.
Her once lively eyes brimming with vitality and resolve now seemed entirely devoid of emotion or recognition. A wicked grin tugged at the edges of her mouth as an eerie voice slipped from her lips.
"You've come...exactly as I expected." Jarec felt a shiver run down his spine. This wasn't Mina. Something had taken hold of her.
"Velaris, what should we do?" Jarec murmured his mind racing with thoughts. Velaris moved closer to Jarec wearing a serious expression.
"This isn't possession. The darkness we fought was just a fragment of something much bigger. It's using Mina as a vessel… and its power is intensifying by the second."
"How can we stop it?" Tharion asked keeping his voice steady despite the growing tension. Velaris hesitated for a moment before speaking to Jarec. *"We need to merge again. But this time we have to dive deeper into the chaos. There's a way to break its hold but it will require more than brute force."* Jarec swallowed anxiously.
He grasped Velaris's request during their previous fusion he had struggled to hold onto his individuality. Now Velaris aimed to dive deeper into Azars tumultuous power. It was a bet but there were no other options. "Lets do this Jarec said steadying himself.
Velaris acknowledged with a nod and once more his form shifted into pure energy blending with Jarec. This time the surge of power struck Jarec with such intensity that it sent his thoughts spiraling. Yet Velaris was there, guiding him and helping him channel the wild energy towards a purpose. As the tempestuous energy began to settle Jarec felt an awareness wash over him.
His senses sharpened allowing him to perceive the shadows presence cloaking Mina in darkness. "Now Velaris voice echoed in Jarecs mind. "Focus. Use the chaos to unravel the darkness. Chaos doesnt destroy it disrupts. We must cut the connection.
As Velaris influenced his every move Jarec reached out to Mina unleashing a surge of energy from his hand. The ominous presence flinched sensing the untamed power that Jarec wielded.
"Release her!" Jarec ordered, his voice resonating with the combined might of his own and Velaris.
The shadows encircling Mina trembled but tightened their grip resisting any release.
"You have no power in this place!" the shadow spat its tone dripping with malice. "Chaos is nothing more than a harbinger of ruin!"
"Thats not how it works" Jarec said his eyes gleaming with unwavering determination.
"Chaos signifies change." With a surge of vitality Jarec unleashed a wave of chaotic energy that surged through the clearing.
