To celebrate Jennifer's promotion, Kara and Dani organized a small dinner party at her house.
All three women grew up in the same small town and didn't have many friends in the city. Dani had a boyfriend now, but wisely chose not to bring him. After all, this was a celebration for the three of them, and it would have been awkward for Dani to bring him along. Besides, the last thing they needed was an outsider when their evening usually descended into playful chaos.
The next day, Kara had to act as the chauffeur. First, she dropped Dani off at her place, then she had the unenviable task of dragging Jennifer, hungover and nursing a headache, to retrieve her official appointment letter.
With everything finally sorted, Jennifer was all set to assume her new position in Gotham City in three days.
Gotham wasn't far from Metropolis, so three days felt like plenty of time for Jennifer to get ready. Besides, Gotham had recently faced a major crisis, and justice was in dire need of her presence.
Rumor had it that since Carmine Falcone was imprisoned, his criminal empire had begun to fracture. This provided a unique opportunity to crack down on the gangs and restore some semblance of order.
Falcone's power didn't stem from personal strength alone. His family had been running Gotham's underworld for decades. But after his capture and incarceration in Arkham Asylum, at least fifteen rival gangs had sprung up in his place, tearing his empire apart.
Naturally, Kara was still worried about Jennifer, and on the third day, she drove her to Gotham herself.
While on the road, Kara received a call from Perry White. This time, he could no longer hold back and growled into the phone, "Why haven't you shown up to work yet?"
This was already Kara's fourth day back in Metropolis, and although she was supposed to return to work on the second day, she had spent the last few days helping Jennifer with her move.
Jennifer, sitting in the passenger seat, could clearly hear Perry's roar over the phone and glanced at Kara, worried about her friend's job.
But Kara wasn't fazed. She was used to Perry's outbursts, so she just drove with one hand and held the phone to her ear with the other.
"Jennifer's moving to Gotham, and I'm helping her settle in," Kara explained casually.
"Moving?" Perry nearly exploded. If this were any ordinary employee, he would've fired them on the spot.
But this was Kara. Not only was she his junior colleague, but her column was one of the most popular in the Daily Planet, practically the face of the paper.
What's more, Kara had a contract that made it difficult for her to leave or be fired without some serious consequences.
Kara, sensing Perry's frustration, quickly added, "Relax, Perry. I'll find some time to interview Bruce Wayne, or better yet, snap a few photos of Batman for you. That should smooth things over, right?"
Perry grumbled in response, glancing at the article Kara had submitted earlier that morning, ready for the next issue. Despite his gruff exterior, a grin tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Kara ended the call and rolled her eyes. "Brother Perry really takes good care of you," Jennifer teased. "Could it be that he's sweet on you? I remember when we were in school, he was always looking out for you."
Kara shot Jennifer a warning look. "Are you serious? Perry's practically ancient, and he's fully aware of that fact."
Jennifer stifled a giggle. "Poor Perry. You really don't hold back, do you?"
It wasn't that Perry was a bad guy; there were just plenty of people who were more desirable. Besides, if Kara so much as winked at Bruce Wayne, he'd probably forget all about Rachel Dawes.
In truth, Kara had no shortage of admirers. Ever since her column took off, her popularity had skyrocketed, and the Daily Planet had tried to position her as a public face for the paper. That led to her guest appearance on a talk show.
After that, wealthy men from all over began swarming the Daily Planet just to get a chance to take her out to dinner.
It was rumored that the previous editor-in-chief had retired partly because of the headaches caused by dealing with all of Kara's admirers.
But Kara never entertained the attention. "Handle your own mess," she'd say, staying out of the drama she unintentionally stirred up.
Despite Kara thinking of herself as low-key, she had been a prominent figure ever since high school.
As they drove and chatted, they soon arrived in Gotham City.
During these past few days, Kara had also helped Jennifer find an apartment—highly secure, but also quite expensive.
Not that Jennifer had to worry. With her current salary, she could afford it easily.
In fact, Jennifer could be considered wealthy by most standards. Her savings alone amounted to several million dollars. And while it might not seem like much when compared to billionaires, it was an enormous sum to most of Gotham's residents.
If she had been the type to accept bribes, she could have accumulated even more wealth. But that wasn't Jennifer's style. She was known for her integrity as a prosecutor, and even Bruce Wayne had praised her when Kara called him to arrange a welcome dinner for her.
Bruce had heard of the new chief justice's reputation, though Jennifer wasn't thrilled that he didn't seem to remember that she had once been his classmate.
Nevertheless, that evening, Bruce drove to meet the two women.
Kara hadn't paid much attention to her appearance, opting for casual attire—shirt, pants, and flat sneakers—giving her a youthful, playful look that belied her nearly thirty years.
On the other hand, Jennifer was impeccably dressed in a blue gown with beautiful high heels, light makeup, and perfectly styled hair. She wore no expensive jewelry, just a simple pearl necklace and a delicate ladies' watch.
Compared to Kara, Jennifer appeared more polished and elegant, and even Bruce couldn't help but be momentarily dazzled by her.
Jennifer secretly congratulated herself. It seemed all her effort had paid off.
