Chapter 35: Chapter 34

It had been three years since they last saw each other, and both Dani and Jennifer had matured significantly.

After all, they were twenty-seven now, and Kara had heard they were working in official positions.

Jennifer was now a prosecutor with the Met, while Dani seemed a bit mysterious; rumors said she worked in some special department.

Kara had called her friends before coming back and had arranged a meet-up after her job interview. She found a nearby restaurant, and so, the three close friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time finally reunited.

Perry, their old companion, decided to give them space, knowing they probably had a lot to catch up on.

"So, even though I know you've been traveling around the world these years, couldn't you have called us a couple of times?" Jennifer complained to Kara, upset that Kara had only contacted her family to let them know she was safe but never reached out to her friends.

Kara shrugged with a smile. "International calls are expensive, after all."

Jennifer huffed, frustrated, but she knew she couldn't blame her too much. Back then, international phone bills were indeed quite expensive.

Dani, who had remained silent until that point, smiled and tried to calm the situation. "She's back now, Jen. Stop complaining." Then, her tone changed as she looked at Kara with curiosity. "Speaking of which, Kara, are you still in touch with Bruce?"

The question caught Kara off guard. "Why bring him up out of the blue?"

Dani shot a glance at Jennifer and shrugged. "Because this one here is still pining over him. She hasn't seen him in years, but she can't seem to let him go."

Kara looked at Jennifer in surprise.

Annoyed, Jennifer snapped at Dani. "Don't be ridiculous. I've just been focused on work. Or haven't you been single this whole time?"

What Dani said next left both Kara and Jennifer stunned. "Actually, I'm not single anymore. I have a boyfriend, and we're planning to get married either later this year or next."

Kara and Jennifer stared at her in disbelief. "Seriously?"

Dani grinned mischievously. "I never said I wanted to stay single forever."

After that surprising revelation, the conversation inevitably returned to Bruce. Over the years, he had been the only person Jennifer seemed genuinely interested in.

"Do you really think I've spent the last three years with Bruce?" Kara raised her hands in surrender. "No, I bumped into him once by chance, and then we went our separate ways."

"Jennifer, you should probably let him go," Dani chimed in, trying to convince their friend to stop clinging to the past.

Jennifer shrugged in resignation. She wasn't the lovestruck girl she once was, but she knew exactly how she felt. "Don't worry, if I meet someone better than him, I'll move on. The problem is, I haven't. It's not bad luck—it's just that no one around me compares to him."

Kara sighed internally. She knew Bruce had captivated Jennifer from the start with his mysterious and brooding demeanor. If Jennifer had seen the rough shape Bruce had been in during his homeless years, wandering aimlessly, she might have changed her mind.

"If I had known you liked him so much, I should've gotten a picture of him for you," Kara joked.

The three friends spent hours catching up. They talked about everything, from feelings to their experiences over the past years apart.

Kara recounted some of her adventures, while Jennifer shared stories about the cases she had worked on. Dani, on the other hand, revealed a bit about her enigmatic job.

"I'm working in something you might call 'superhuman affairs' now," Dani said seriously. "Recently, I found an artifact called a 'Mother Box,' although I'm not quite sure of its origin."

Kara raised an eyebrow at that. The Mother Box. The name echoed in her mind. Though Dani didn't know all the details, Kara did. She had heard about these boxes before—powerful artifacts from a place far beyond Earth, the planet Apokolips. They were tools of immense power, capable of altering the fate of entire worlds. The legend said that if three Mother Boxes were united, the power they released could either destroy or transform a planet in the blink of an eye. She also remembered the ancient war on Earth, when Steppenwolf, a general from Apokolips, tried to conquer the planet. That was when the Amazons, Atlanteans, old gods, and human tribes had joined forces to defeat him and hide the boxes forever.

Kara decided not to share this information for now. She didn't want to alarm Dani, nor did she want to interfere with her work. If the Mother Boxes were in play again, things could get complicated quickly. Still, she trusted Dani could handle it, but she would keep an eye on the situation, just in case.

"At least there doesn't seem to be any immediate danger," Dani added. "My job is just to make sure things like that don't fall into the wrong hands."

Kara nodded, trying to act casual, though she was already planning to stay vigilant. "Well, I know who to call if I ever need someone to keep an eye on me," she joked.

The three friends laughed, relieved to finally enjoy each other's company again after so much time apart.
