Under Kara's enlightenment, or rather, her own reminder, Hal understood that he now had to rely on himself. The Green Lantern Corps and the Asgardians on Oa clearly had no intention of sacrificing their so-called elites in vain to protect Earth.
However, the pressing issue was that Kara might need the Green Lantern ring to function in outer space. For reasons unknown, the green light ring seemed to have a will of its own, floating toward Kara's left hand in a swirl of radiant emerald arcs and light.
A ball of green light held her left hand up, and the ring began to align itself with her left ring finger. But Kara easily shook it off.
"Seriously?" Kara rolled her eyes. "What's with this thing? Does it have a mind of its own?"
Everyone present watched in astonishment as the ring hovered near her, insistent yet oddly hesitant. Dani broke the silence. "Kara, that's outer space we're talking about. Are you sure you can survive without it? Even if you wear the ring, it could help."
Dani couldn't understand Kara's resistance to the Green Lantern ring.
"If I could, I'd take your place," Dani said earnestly. "I want to help you, to protect Earth. But the ring chose you, not me."
The Green Lantern ring selected its bearer, not the other way around. Even Hal found the situation perplexing. When the ring had chosen him, he was drawn to it by a green force and met Abin Sur, who had been dying at the time. Hal had inherited the ring without any of the odd theatrics now unfolding around Kara.
The green ring hovered around Kara's left hand like a puppy seeking attention, focused on her ring finger.
Kara raised her left hand, glaring at the persistent ring. "What's with this obsession with my ring finger?" she muttered.
The others exchanged bewildered glances. Why was she so resistant? Even Hal wondered if there was something deeply negative about the ring that Kara wasn't sharing.
"It's hideous," Kara finally said flatly.
"What?" Dani blinked, not believing her ears.
"I said, green is hideous. It's the color of forgiveness. Why would anyone pick green for willpower? Does it take a lot of willpower to forgive someone? Please. It's ridiculous," Kara huffed, clearly unimpressed.
Everyone in the room stared at her, dumbfounded. Was she seriously resisting because she didn't like the color? Even the ring seemed to pause midair, as though baffled by her words.
Dani, shaking her head, hugged Kara. "Big sister, the Earth is in danger, and you're worried about fashion?" She grabbed Kara's left hand, trying to slide the ring on, but Kara pulled away.
"I'll wear it myself," Kara said, sighing. "It requires an oath anyway."
She finally looked around at the group, resigned. The truth was, she was confident she could defeat the Parallax Entity, but she had never faced an opponent of this caliber. What if she failed?
Kara knew she would survive no matter what, but Earth might not. As much as she disliked the ring, she acknowledged that the Green Lantern's power of will could suppress the fear of yellow. It might be crucial.
Raising her right hand, Kara grasped the ring.
Suddenly, an ancient voice resonated, seemingly out of nowhere but clear to everyone present:
"Daughter of Krypton, Kara Zor-El, you possess boundless and steadfast willpower. Welcome to the Corps of Will."
Kara nearly threw the ring in surprise. "Seriously? Does it have to announce me like that?"
"Kara?" Dani whispered, wide-eyed. "Daughter of Krypton? Aren't you the daughter of Jonathan Kent, the farmer?"
Kara gritted her teeth. "I'll explain later."
Finally, she slipped the ring onto her left index finger. At that moment, a solemn vow filled her mind.
Resigned, Kara recited:
"In brightest midnight, in never-ending light, let evil reveal its true plight. With this oath, I vanquish the darkness, and let the will shine forever."
Hal watched in shock. Her oath was entirely different from his. But there was no time to dwell on it. As soon as Kara completed the oath, the ring on her hand erupted with blinding green light, far brighter than Hal's.
Before anyone could react, Kara was lifted into the air by the power of the ring. She quickly realized it was the ring's doing, not her own strength.
Dani called out, but Kara only gave her a reassuring glance before allowing the ring to guide her. She suspected it was taking her to Oa and decided to let it.
Hal immediately transformed into his Green Lantern suit and prepared to follow her. His friend Tom, watching the scene unfold, couldn't help but quip, "Man, she's not wrong. That suit is ugly."
Hal ignored the comment, determined to bring Kara back safely. But when he flew after her, he was stunned to find that Kara was far ahead of him, moving faster than he could keep up.
By the time Hal reached Oa, he found the planet in a state of chaos. Green Lanterns hovered everywhere, forming defensive perimeters.
Hal descended to find Kara standing calmly on the ground, facing the Asgardians stationed there. The entire Corps seemed to be on high alert, all eyes on the Kryptonian who had just arrived.
