Chapter 563: Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 328. Chasing Shadows in a Fog

Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 328. Chasing Shadows in a Fog

If that were true, then his entire understanding of his own past, of his family's history, was flawed. What if his connection to the crystal went back further than he could even imagine? What if the shadow, the girl, and his own bloodline were all entwined in some dark, ancient story that had been kept from him?

The more Angel thought about it, the more unsettling the idea became. But why had his father never mentioned anything about it? Why had there been no warning, no stories passed down through his family about the crystal or its true origins?

Angel tried to exhaust every possible connection in his mind, playing out various scenarios like a puzzle he was desperate to solve.

The possibilities swirled in his head, but none of them felt right. It was all too random, too speculative. There was no concrete evidence, no clear thread he could follow. And the fact that his father had never spoken of any of this left him at a dead end.

Angel clenched his jaw in frustration. He had always been able to navigate through problems, to think critically and find solutions, but this… this felt like chasing shadows in a fog. There was nothing solid for him to hold onto, only vague memories and ominous dreams that provided more questions than answers. He wanted to believe that his connection to the shadow and the girl was just a far-fetched theory, but the dream and the intensity of the voices he had heard, kept gnawing at him.

He pinched the bridge of his nose and exhaled slowly, trying to clear his mind. The headache that had been building since he woke up was now pulsing at his temples. 'What a great way to start the day,' he thought cynically, his mood souring further. He hadn't even begun his work yet, and already he felt drained.

Angel swung his legs over the edge of the bed, sitting up as quietly as possible so as not to wake Rose. He ran a hand through his hair, his mind still churning. 'Was Father hiding something from me?' That question gnawed at him, a bitter possibility he didn't want to accept. His father had been a man of honor, someone Angel had admired deeply. If there had been some family secret, some dark history tied to the crystal, why wouldn't he have told Angel?

But then again, perhaps his father hadn't known. Maybe the crystal's curse was something even older, something buried so deep in the past that the truth had been lost over generations. The more Angel tried to piece it together, the more frustrated he became. It felt like trying to grasp smoke—every possible answer slipped through his fingers just as he thought he had a hold on it.

As his mind swirled with these unanswered questions, a gentle voice broke through the chaos.

"Are you awake?"

Rose's voice managed to pull him out of the labyrinth of thoughts.

Angel blinked, realizing he had been lost in his mind for what felt like hours, though it had only been moments. He turned to look at her, lying beside him with concern etched on her face.

"Did I wake you up?" Angel asked softly, trying to shake off his thoughts.

Rose sat up, the blanket clutched to her chest, covering her body in a shy, instinctive gesture. The early morning light streaming through the curtains highlighted the softness of her features, but her expression was filled with worry. She shook her head immediately, brushing her hair back from her face. "No," she said, her voice gentle but probing. "But you look troubled."

Angel sighed, feeling her eyes on him. She had always been good at reading him, seeing through the layers he tried to keep hidden. He couldn't hide his discomfort from her, even if he wanted to.

Rose moved closer to him, her hand still gripping the blanket, but her eyes searching his face for answers. "What happened?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. She had noticed the tension in his body, the frown that hadn't left his face since they woke up. He also looked worn, as if something had drained the life out of him in the night.
