Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 326. Nightmare Or Delusions?

Angel shifted slightly in bed, careful not to disturb Rose. He could feel her warmth and her steady breathing. He turned his head slightly, looking at her peaceful face with mixed feelings. He didn't want to burden her with his nightmares. She had already endured so much because of him. But he remembered that he had promised that he would opened up to her. Yet… he was afraid that she thought this nightmare was just a nightmare or maybe a delusion.

But the dream wouldn't leave him alone. The image of the girl's defiance, her fierce resistance against the shadow's command, kept flashing in his mind. Who was she? Why did she sound so familiar? And why did she seem to share his fate?

'So the girl was the crystal's host before it came to me?' Angel pondered, his mind piecing together the fragments of his dream. He had always known that the crystal's dark power had a history, that it hadn't simply materialized from nothing. But he had always assumed that the shadow had been the one to wield its power directly. Now, though, it seemed more likely that the girl from his dream had been the host before him.

The image of her running away flashed through his mind once again. 'Or… she was supposed to be the host, but she ran away,' Angel considered. That would explain why the shadow had needed to find a new host for the crystal. If she had managed to escape, to defy the fate the shadow had intended for her, then the crystal would have sought a new vessel. And eventually, that vessel had been him.

But as soon as the thought settled in his mind, a frown creased his forehead. 'Wait… this is weird,' he thought. He was a descendant of the Reinheart family, one of the few remaining heirs to the legacy of the Holy Knights of Asteria. The girl, if she had been chosen as the host before him, should have been the one to kill him. The shadow's intent had been clear in his dream—to wipe out all the bloodlines of the Holy Knights. If that was the case, why hadn't the shadow killed him outright when he and his father were attacked?

Instead, the shadow had cursed him, made him the new host for the crystal. It didn't add up. It contradicted everything the shadow had said about its desire to eradicate the descendants of the Holy Knights. Why make him, a Reinheart, the vessel for the crystal's power? Why not end his life then and there?

Angel's mind raced as he tried to make sense of it. There was a missing piece, a gap in his understanding that he needed to fill. The shadow's actions didn't align with its stated goals. If the crystal was meant to destroy his bloodline, then why had it been embedded within him, giving him a power that, while dark and dangerous, had also saved his life on more than one occasion?

'Unless…' Angel's thoughts took a darker turn. 'Unless there's more to this than I realize. Maybe… maybe the crystal wasn't just a weapon against the Holy Knights. Maybe it was meant for something else, something more complicated.'

But what could it be?

Did the shadow decide to take revenge in the most insidious way possible—by using a member of the Reinheart family to destroy the others? Was that the true purpose of making him the crystal's host?

Angel remembered how he killed Ilex.

Was this all part of the shadow's twisted plan? To turn a Reinheart against his own blood, to make him a tool of destruction for his own family?

Or maybe the shadow's goal was to divide the Reinheart family, to sow discord and mistrust among its members. By making Angel the bearer of the crystal, had the shadow intended to drive a wedge between him and the rest of his kin, to ensure that the family was forever fractured and weakened? The thought was sickening, but it was not without merit. The Reinheart family had been a symbol of unity and strength in Asteria, a fortress against darkness. But now, with Angel bearing the crystal's power, that unity had been compromised.

Yet even this explanation didn't fully satisfy him.
