No fear came like I thought it might. I was going into the lion’s den and didn’t mind at all. It was mostly just a courtesy call after all. He was probably trying to intimidate us with the fanciness of the restaurant, but I’d been eating at places like this all my life.

It was impossible to know what was in someone else’s mind, but good, and educated guesses weren’t hard to find, especially if you knew where to look.

We were ready to fight by hook or by crook, but Stevens had probably made the mistake of taking us for how we looked. Two young women in their mid-20s. Silly girls to his mind no doubt, happy just for the offer.

If so, he had a funny way of showing it. The blackout could be considered a business prank, but the lock was just mean. The cost was so high to reverse the damage to the door that it could have put us out of business. Which could have been his plan all along. I wouldn’t put it past him.
