The rooster crowed at the appointed time, returning me to the waking realm to find Ellis already warming up for training.

“Oh good, you’re up,” he said, stretching a leg impressively behind his back.

“I think so, let me check.”

I gently pinched myself and yup, I was definitely up, or at least was soon to be, just watch me.

Into my tracksuit and mostly ready to go, my brain was yet to fully wake up from sleep mode. We playfully raced each other down the stairs, Ellis winning by no small margin.

There had been a sense of friendly competition since he’d started training with me. Nothing too intense, mostly because he usually won, but not always which was enough to gently embolden me, making it so I kept trying to at least keep up, if not pass him.

“Let’s go,” Luke said, already out of his car.
