Chapter 56: Existential Crisis Solved By An Invisible Sword
The same night, William slipped through the buildings of Backlund as fast as he could without showing himself.
In fact, Meursault was only the first of his targets. It hadn't been long, but True Creator and Evernight Goddess had hit it off to some extent and had made a non-aggression pact, as well as giving each other some information.
William was initially surprised by this change, but it actually wasn't that crazy once he thought about it more deeply. The Gods had probably lived for millennia, their humanity was practically lost at this point, most likely. This would mean that the concept of friendships or relationships, in general, was something much more subject to circumstances than it would be for normal people.
Although this might seem like a bad thing, in fact, once you understood it, you would hardly fall for their tricks, because everyone knew what everyone wanted at high levels. Of course, this did not mean that Gods could not fall due to the machinations of other Gods, but it did make it unlikely.
William shook his head, trying to get rid of all these thoughts.
'Since I discovered the name of the Evernight Goddess, these Gods seem to have lost all their mysticism, even if they are still terrifying.' While he was thinking this, he arrived at an urban mansion.
He wore a black cloak that covered his entire body, including his face. This was Sealed Artifact 2-007: Robes of the Night.
Because this mission required a high level of discretion, the Church had agreed to allow him to use this artifact. Luckily, he did not have to carry out the Aurora Order's assignments while he was hiding from the Nighthawks, which gave him a much wider range of possibilities to act.
Robes of the Night surrounded the user with shadows while distorting his face and features slightly. In fact, this artifact simulated the concealment powers of a Nightwatcher, but it would slowly turn him into someone taciturn and antisocial.
Through a window, and up a tree, William saw his target.
Bakerland Jean Madan, the Intis ambassador to the Loen Kingdom. It seemed that this man had been spying in Backlund for the Intis Republic, in addition to committing various crimes for which MI9 had wanted to imprison him more than once, although they could not gather enough evidence to do so.
He was a man William wouldn't particularly care to kill, so he accepted the mission.
'MI9 couldn't openly frame him, so it's up to me to do the dirty work. However, why would the Aurora Order be interested in taking this guy down? They don't seem to stick too closely to morality, and even less so in politics...'
The situation was curious, to say the least, but it did not worry William too much, he would take advantage of this situation to act as a Templar and follow God's orders directly, which would speed up his already rapid digestion.
"Darling, you should use Meteor, and take them both down at the same time." Debris's voice woke him up from his trance, she sounded angry. "These guys are so shameless! They're doing it in the moonlight without a care in the world, with the window opened! I'm sure the neighbors can hear it."
Yes, the Bakerland guy was having sex in his room with a girl who was clearly a witch, which once again caused William to reflect on the complex and intricate threads of fate that seemed to lead him deeper and deeper into an eternal enmity with a sect of transvestite guys in the magical sense of the word. If he hadn't met him in person, William would think Ouroboros was playing a prank on him.
"How terrible, how terrible. What should I do? This guy seems too engrossed in the taste of a witch to be left alone." He murmured.
If possible, he did not want more casualties than were necessary. If he started intentionally hunting witches, then he would be giving that group of crazy women a reason... another reason to target him.
"We've been doing nothing for ten minutes." Debris commented.
William looked at the sky.
'Lately, I feel like I'm rambling a little. Constantly putting your life in danger is detrimental to your mental health, I don't want to end up in an asylum at 30.' He reflected.
"Darling, you should get a girlfriend to de-stress, I'm sure that would help you." The sword answered him happily.
William glanced at Debris lightly.
"Didn't you say something about you and me being destined or something?" He asked, genuinely curious about this suggestion.
Debris laughed, although it was strange coming from a sword.
"Of course, that hasn't changed, but I don't mind sharing you with some girls."
There was a moment of silence, and William suddenly felt happy.
'I see, my mental health has not yet deteriorated enough even to feel a little attraction towards that idea. Thank you, Debris, for making me see that there is still hope.' With a smile, he tightly gripped the invisible sword.
"Hehe, you're welcome. Of course, I would never share you with anyone..." Debris couldn't finish what she wanted to say, because she was launched towards the mansion at breakneck speeds.
She ripped a hole through the mansion as if a massive laser beam had been fired, leaving the walls of the second floor filled with the blood of both Beyonders.
In William's defense, he had to act as an envoy of the Aurora Order, after all.

Because I can't use corruption as such, I need some kind of mental problem that William has to solve over time. Of course, the path of the extraordinary is very dangerous even if we exclude corruption, that will become clear.
I hope you enjoyed the chapter.
