"It was only today that I met him..." I repeated.

"Oh, I see," Kian's hands finally relaxed as he drove, the crease in his brow dissipating as his mood shifted 180 degrees. "What kind of bubble tea do you want, princess?"

He was trying to strike up a conversation with a frazzled and befuddled me, and I tried to reciprocate, but I wasn't in the mood. I was still a little sad, remembering how the boy next to me, who was the closest thing I had to a true friend, had nearly blown up at me for no apparent reason.

We arrived at the bubble tea shop's parking lot, and Kian exited the vehicle before opening the door for me. He pretended as if nothing had happened on the way over, instead wrapping his arm around my small waist as he led me inside.

I inhaled deeply, feeling compelled to make a distressing noise, but I restrained myself. His arm felt strangely out of place as it drew me in closer. It almost made me feel like a traitor. To what or whom, I didn’t know.
