Chapter 146: 145- Dead Shot
Hera's temple was built around ninth century BC in Ceni. It's the earliest fully developed temple on Eight hill. It's the most visited place of Ceni. There was a strange tradition. Women're bound to come wearing face masks here. When the temple was thronged Ryan and other policemen became active. They were looking for any tall lady figure. Many tall ladies in jeans with face masks had come and gone. Still many were entering. Ryan was observing women in masks; but he could not ask them to uncover their masks. He could not hurt anyone's religious feelings. It is ok. I can still find her even if she comes in a mask: he thought.
His eyes fell on an odd figure. She had worn yellow jeans and had covered her face with a mask; but she was walking like a male and had rabbit ears. Ryan approached toward her; she started to run. Ryan also ran after her. A couple of police officers also followed Ryan. Ryan had never expected that it would end up like this. A truck came from nowhere and hit the tall woman in the yellow jeans. She leapt to air and fell flat on the ground. She trembled for a few seconds, then vomited blood and fell still. Ryan was observing all this. He stopped before the woman and kneeled beside her. He removed the face mask. Most of her facial features were marred and bloody; but still he could recognize the big lips, bulgy eyes, prominent chin, rabbit ears and ugly face.
"She is the one I was looking for," concluded Ryan. "Damn me."
Then he rose up and was moving toward the temple.
"Sir," shouted one of the police officers following him, who had shortly stopped behind him to look at the body. Ryan looked at the officer's finger pointing toward the body. She was not dead. Not till now. She had enough energy left to get her pistol swiftly from her back and aim at Ryan and shoot. Ryan stumbled for few seconds. Then fell with a thud upon her. They both died.
