Chapter 124: 123- Driving Crazy

Mobile phone and internet were out of question. They even advised Matthew against having any friend. He suspected his family members spied upon him wherever he went, whomever he met with. Most of the times he obeyed his elders. If they told him something repeatedly, they must be telling it for his benefit. But he sometimes found a guilty pleasure in breaking the rules. He went to cinema halls, went hotels and pubs when he became fifteen. He even got a chance to date a girl every Saturday last year, until he was caught red-handed by his grandpa who mentioned about the girl at dinner time before Adam and asked Matthew to bring that girl to home. But Adam did not speak a word: no "Yes"; no "No". Then within two days they were shifting to Kaerlud.

Sometimes Matthew remembered the girl. Her name was Kera. She was a pretty girl, with mature behavior. She was a good listener. He used to become talkative before her. That was why Matthew developed an impression that the most flippant and flirtatious boy gets the most beautiful girl. That was why he was talking restlessly before Veronica. Well his hypothesis of the way of getting girls was proven correct. But to his shock he found that that girl Kera got a new boy friend. When he knew it from Kera's Facebook status he got angry upon Adam.

He did not get many things that other common children got; yet he had four luxuries: he was allowed to read literature and pop culture books from which he came to know about so many things; he played chess with his grandpa and sometimes father; in the mornings his grandpa gave him training of martial arts; at night before bed he meditated with her mother.

Anything strange, anything out of ordinary raised myriad of questions in his mind. He tried to get the answers of those questions by himself, for Adam would not answer them – Matthew thought perhaps Adam had promised himself that he would only answer his maths and science questions; no other questions. And Susan – his foster mother, would say, "We will answer all your questions, when you grow up." And Matthew knew that he would never grow up before her.

Everything was going ok, until the accident. Adam was driving his family in a Toyota Innova near Kaerlud. Matthew asked for his father's permission through his grandpa to drive the car. His grandpa had taught him driving and nick-named him a smooth driver. When he insisted, grandpa also insisted Adam to allow him drive. But there was only one condition that was he would only drive for ten kilometers. He agreed. For the first five kilometers he was driving safely. But at a less-crowded place a child came running after its ball before the car and to save the child Matthew had to turn the steering and the car struck an electric pole. On the front seat Susan and Matthew were sitting. Susan was unhurt; but Matthew was heavily injured. He had a heavy head injury. He was unconscious; but he could hear things. Adam took him to the nearby hospital against grandpa's advice of taking him to a private clinic for better treatment. As the clinic was far away Adam declined the advice. It took him a month to recover. Matthew felt ok; but he felt as if he had lost some of his hearing capacity. The doctor said it would be ok within months. He was coming back to normalcy. Well, Adam was giving instances of the accident whenever Matthew dared to question or deviate from the regulations set by him. One day Matthew woke from his siesta and found Susan was not there, Adam and grandpa snoring in their rooms. It was time for his medicines. He searched drawer and freezer; but he could not find the medicines. Sometimes Susan put the medicines in the cupboard, so he searched there; but there were no medicines. So he took his purse and the prescription and went to the medicine store near the medical where he was treated. In the medicine store of the small town there were two shopkeepers: one thin and short; another tall and fat. He bought the medicines and paid for them and went on his way to home. He was half way home when he remembered that he had to buy some aspirins for his grandpa, for grandpa's supplies of aspirins had finished. So he returned to the medicine store. He was coming from the backside of the store. There was no one around near the medicine store and the two shopkeepers' voice was clearly heard. From the voice Matthew recognized it was the thin and short man saying, "The boy would have died without me. He is lucky. For I was thinking of leaving for home early that day."

The other man said, "Everything is luck pal. See what a lucky boy he is. He must be someone's sin. But see how luxuriously he is growing up with his foster parents."

"Shh, do not tell it to anyone. His foster father does not want the news to spread. Only we and the doctor and the nurse know about this. I gave him blood. Do not tell it to anyone."

Matthew stopped there. He did not go to the front side of the shop. What are they talking about: he thought: Are they talking about me? No, definitely not. I do not have foster parents. They must be talking about someone else. Then he suddenly appeared before the two shop keepers. Seeing him again they were shocked.

The thin and the short one tried to act natural, though he was becoming shaky – even his hands shook. In a shakey tone he asked, "Why sir, why have you come again?"

"Nothing, I just need a strip of aspirin for my grandpa," said Matthew.

"Oh, yes, your grandpa. How is he? Must be very old. What age?"

"Seventy five years old."

"Wow, so strong… an inspiration," said the fat and tall shop keeper. But he did not look inspired a bit. The other one fetched a strip of aspirin. Matthew paid for it and came back. What's with these men? When they saw me again why they acted weird?
