Chapter 72: Shouldn't Have Pretended to Sleep

Amelia's heart tightened when she heard the voice from outside. It was just a casual call to relieve some tension, why would he come and ask about it?

She adjusted the water flow to slow down a bit and replied, "It's nothing, I'll be fine in a moment."

Hearing her voice, Ethan, who was standing outside the bathroom, finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Why did she have to call out so loudly?

Ethan exhaled softly, sat down on the side, and waited for her to come out.

Amelia put on her pajamas and walked out. Ethan earnestly looked at her with a hint of confusion and surprise in his deep eyes.

"What were you calling just now?" Ethan walked up to her and asked.

Amelia hesitated, stuttering as she stood there, wanting to speak but stopping herself. "I... I... it's nothing..."

Ethan continued to gaze at her, capturing every change in her expression. He lightly curved his lips and reached out to touch her hair gently. His tone was warm, "If something is bothering you, just tell me."

Amelia looked up at Ethan, meeting his eyes filled with a mixture of puzzlement and tenderness. After a moment of hesitation, she gave him a faint smile and shook her head.

Seeing that she didn't answer, Ethan felt even more puzzled. He furrowed his brows slightly, froze for a moment, and then patted her shoulder. "If you don't want to say, then forget about it. If there's anything I can do for you, just let me know."

Amelia nodded deeply. How could she doubt Ethan when he treated her so well, taking care of her every need? But Michael's words...

Between Michael and Ethan, she still chose to believe in Ethan.

"I'm really fine. It's just... I'm not sure if I can handle the contract we're signing today. I feel a bit overwhelmed and nervous."

Ethan smiled, his deep eyes revealing an indiscernible mix of affection and joy. "So, that's why. Follow me."

Taking her hand, the two walked into his study. Ethan opened a drawer and took out some contract files, placing them in front of her.

"These are the first contracts our newly appointed directors worked on. Take a look and see if they can be of any help."

Amelia lifted her head and looked at Ethan's gentle expression. She nodded gently and sat next to him. They started going through the documents together.

He looked at the company's latest progress contracts, while she examined the initial contracts of the directors. They occasionally glanced at each other, their eyes filled with deep fondness.

Just like that, two hours passed. Ethan stood up and walked behind her, asking softly, "Do you have any insights?"

Amelia turned her neck a few times, stretched lazily, and then turned to look at Ethan. She paused for a moment, nodded, and said, "I feel like these really resemble the work of newcomers, not the perfect contracts we usually see."

Ethan nodded lightly, agreeing with her statement. "Do you know why I wanted you to look at these?"

Amelia stood up, facing him, and spoke earnestly as if reporting her work. "I think you wanted me to see their shortcomings, so that when I take over, I won't make the same mistakes. I should pay attention to these flaws, learn from others' oversights, and strive for perfection."

Ethan nodded in satisfaction, his deep eyes filled with a hint of admiration.

"I didn't expect your perception to be quite good. Knowing how to achieve perfection is easy, but understanding the areas that can easily be imperfect requires careful observation."

Amelia smiled and nodded, neatly organizing the documents and placing them back into the drawer Ethan had taken them from.

"You go take a shower. I'll go to bed. Look, it's already midnight." Amelia lifted her head and pointed at the clock in the study. Ethan nodded.

Lying there, Amelia felt a sense of calmness. Being with him for two hours allowed her to truly relax. The image of Ethan reading the documents in the study kept appearing in her mind. He possessed that unique and extraordinary aura, especially on his handsome face. Occasionally, he would smile gently, and his eyes were so warm, like the soft water from the shower, sprinkling upon her and nurturing her heart with warmth.

The bathroom door opened, and Ethan walked out. Amelia quickly closed her eyes, wearing a sweet smile on her face, pretending to be asleep. She could feel the bed sinking slightly as Ethan lay down.

After a moment of silence, Amelia cautiously opened her eyes just a crack and saw Ethan gazing at her affectionately. She quickly closed her eyes again.

He's too perfect, this man is simply captivating.

Ethan noticed her opening and closing her eyes, knowing that she wasn't asleep. He curved his lips into a gentle smile, reached out, and caressed her adorable face.

Amelia felt a bit nervous, unsure whether she should speak. Her mind was filled with doubts—did he see me looking at him earlier?

He probably didn't. I just took a quick peek.

But he happened to be looking at me too. Could he have seen me sneak a glance at him?

If I had known, I wouldn't have pretended to sleep. This is embarrassing.

"If you can't fall asleep, why don't we chat?" His voice was gentle, slightly seductive, carrying a primal impulse that made Amelia's heart tighten inexplicably. Her face grew warm.

Ethan noticed her lack of response, the blush on her face, and how cute she looked. Unable to resist, he leaned closer, his breathing growing heavier, his gaze hazy. He carefully examined Amelia's lovely and beautiful face.

Sensing his heavy breath, Amelia slowly opened her eyes, gave a faint smile, turned her head slightly, and avoided direct eye contact with his burning gaze.

"What's wrong? Are you feeling shy?"

Shy? How strange. You're the one who's showing affection, not me.

But my face feels a bit hot, did I blush?

"Shy? No, it should be you who's feeling shy," Amelia replied. But the rosy hue on her face became even more evident, making her look increasingly adorable.

Ethan curved his lips into a slight smile, and his deep eyes revealed possessiveness. As Amelia looked at him, her heart skipped a beat, and she became nervous, her heartbeat quickening. She felt unsure and stared straight ahead, at a loss for words.

"You call this not feeling shy?"

"I..." Before she could finish speaking, he sealed her lips with a kiss.

Amidst a whirlwind of emotions, he showed her tenderness both physically and emotionally, and once again, they fell together.

...

The next day.

Sunlight warmly illuminated the room as Amelia opened her eyes, but Ethan was no longer by her side.

She reached out and felt the warmth where he had lain. He must have gotten up not long ago.

Amelia got up, feeling as if her body was barely held together. The previous night had been exhausting, and thinking about the scenes from last night made her feel both embarrassed and happy.
