Chapter 40: Junwei wanted to marry her

Sophie looked at herself in the mirror. She had worn a combination of black and white midi dress with an A-line neck. The upper half was black while the bottom half had broad white strips along with black ones.

"It looks perfect," Sophie murmured and picked up the perfume bottle. She sprayed it on her wrists and rubbed it on her neck. She ran her fingers through her smooth hair and carried the white crossbody bag on her right shoulder.

As she stepped out of her apartment, she found her phone ringing. She took it out of the crossbody bag and saw Junwei's name flash on her phone's screen.

She answered his call and put it on her ear.

"Come to the parking lot quickly," Junwei said and hung up the call without listening to what she had to say.

She felt like kicking his butt, but she could not do that. Sophie put the phone inside her bag and went to the parking lot.

Her eyes fell on Junwei, who was waiting for her outside his car. She was awestruck by his handsomeness. He was the prince charming of her dreams.

"Will you keep staring at me?"

She came out of her thoughts when Junwei's voice fell into her ears. She ran to him and stood straight in front of him. "Why did you come? I would have come by myself," she stated.

"Mom asked me to pick you up," Junwei said and turned to go to the driver's seat. "Get in quickly," he said and stepped inside the car.

Sophie got into the car from the other side and put on the seatbelt.

"I want you to tell my grandpa and my mom that you won't visit them anymore," Junwei said and tilted his face to look at her.

She lowered her hand from the seatbelt. "Why?" She asked.

"Because I don't like it. Your involvement with my family is increasing," Junwei stated.

"Tell this in front of Grandpa Yu and Aunt Katie," Sophie stated.

Junwei gritted his teeth. "Look, Sophie. Grandpa and Mom want me to get married. Since they have found you, they think we can be together, which will never happen. I don't want to stretch our professional relationship," he asserted.

"That's why I told you to do it yourself. You should speak your heart out in front of Grandpa Yu and Aunt Katie," Sophie asserted.

Junwei snickered. How could he forget Sophie would never do something he wanted her to do?

"Do you hate me?" Sophie asked him.

"I don't hate you, but I do not like the way you meddle in my family," Junwei stated.

"Alright," Sophie said and looked outside the window. Junwei turned the engine on and drove to his house.

An hour later, they reached Junwei's family house. Sophie kept the face mask on her face so that she would not be recognized, if anyone, noticed them together.

Katie opened the door and welcomed the two of them.

Sophie took off her face mask as she stepped in first and greeted Junwei's mother. She opened her shoes and wore the home slippers before heading inside with Katie.

"These are the cupcakes I bought. I couldn't come empty-handed," Sophie said and handed it to Katie.

"It was not needed, Sophie," Katie said.

"Why? We can have them after dinner," Sophie said. Katie caressed her head and asked her to sit on the couch. "Father will soon be here," she said and gazed at Junwei.

"I will freshen up first," Junwei said.

"Is Grandpa outside?" Sophie asked.

"Yes. He will soon be here," Katie said and placed the paper bag on the sofa table.

Once Junwei left, Katie gazed at Sophie and asked her if something between them.

"No," Sophie promptly said and motioned her hands in the air in refusal.

"I know my son, Sophie. He loves to be away from the people. He also stays away from us, but since the time you have come, things have changed," Katie asserted.

"What does Aunt Katie mean by that? Junwei scolds me as well at work," Sophie asserted and sighed before taking a seat on the couch with Katie.

"Junwei lost his real self after Fang Jiao died," Katie said. It shocked Sophie, and she asked Katie about her.

"Fang Jiao and Junwei were childhood lovers. Junwei wanted to marry her after graduation. However, Fang Jiao suffered a terminal illness, and she could not be saved. It all happened ten years ago when Junwei was eighteen. He lost her. With her loss, he built a wall around him, which no one could fathom. He is in her memories to date, and it hurts us to see him like this," Katie shared a painful part of Junwei's life with Sophie.

Sophie recalled the interview she read in the morning in which Junwei vaguely told his thoughts about love. She felt so upset to hear it.

"Sophie, will you take a step to change my son? I want him to live as a human. I want to see him smile and enjoy every moment of his life, whether small or big. With you, at least, he gets annoyed or even eager to do something other than work," Katie made a request that Sophie had never expected.
