Chapter 5: Trial Period

"You were you, and I was I;

we were two, before our time.

I was yours, before I knew;

and you have always been mine two.

-Lang Leav

-William-

I watched as Jessica made her way to the restaurant bathroom, her mother had left the building shortly after we had switched tables but I still worried about her. It was obvious that she had been emotionally abused by her mother. I sighed and turned to my parents to see them smiling widely at me.

"You love her." My mother said with a grin, I looked at her shocked at her boldness. "Oh honey, I can see it in your eyes. You look at her the way your father looks at me." My mom said smiling at my father warmly.

"Mom we aren't even officially dating yet. She doesn't want any distractions until she finishes her finals and we only just met two and a half weeks ago." I told her.

"Love doesn't wait for you to be ready, it forces you into uncomfortable situations, time and time again until you learn to embrace it."

"Mom..."

"Don't argue with your mother son, it's not wise and she always wins." My father said with a chuckle.

I couldn't help the smirk on my lips as I watched my mother smack my fathers arm and they playfully teased each other.

"I'll have Thomas pick us up son, you go ahead and spend some time with her." My father said as he and my mother stood up to leave.

Not a moment later Jessica started heading towards us from the bathroom. My mother smiled and pulled her into a hug.

"It was so nice to meet you my dear, I hope we get to see you again soon." My mother said.

"I hope so too. I really enjoyed lunch, you have quiet the son Mrs. Kingston." Jessica's words made me feel she was rethinking the deal at least a little bit.

"He learns fast." My mother said with a small laugh. "I'm holding a charity event on Thursday, would you like to come? My son could used a strong minded woman by his side to sift through the crowd."

I raised my eyebrows at my parents and gave them the 'what the hell' look. I just told them that she didn't want to date right now and that would be considered a date. To my surprise Jessie just laughed and glanced back at me briefly.

"Maybe. We will have to see how the week goes." She said with a smile.

-Jessie-

After Williams parents left the restaurant we stood outside the restaurant waiting for William's driver to bring the car around. I felt so conflicted right now. William had been so sweet, he faced my mom for me and defended me. He came to my rescue when he had other plans for the day, yet I was still struggling with the idea of getting into a relationship with him before I really knew him. It took more than just a few hours and a couple days to get to know someone and I wasn't planning on starting something serious with someone unless I knew we could handle being together like that.

"William, I have a proposition." I said looking over at him. He raised his eyebrows and waited for me to continue. "Let's have a trial period of dating. We don't try to do anything to be overly impressive to one another, just be ourselves in every possible way, so we know exactly how well we work together. If everything goes well then we can continue on dating, if not after a month than no harm done and we can still be friends." I said finally.

A trial period was the only thing I could think of to protect myself from getting in too deep before we were ready to do so. I could just tell myself that it was just one month and if anything bad came from it then I could just move on. Subconsciously I knew that wasn't realistically possible, I was already drawn to William like a moth to a flame. I watched as William thought for a moment about my proposal. He seemed to be genuinely trying to think through every detail. Finally a small smirk spread across his face as he looked down at me.

"I like this idea, and I'll agree to it if we can start now. I also want to add to what you have said. We need to be one hundred percent honest with each other the entire time. We can ask each other what ever questions we want and we have to answer honestly." William said.

I hesitated for a moment, if I agreed to that then he could ask me questions about my past, about my family, and I would have to answer honestly. I wasn't sure if I was ready for that yet, however it would be an honest test of our relationship. If he could handle everything from my past than he quite easily could hold a place in my future.

"Alright, but because of finals that means we are going to have to help each other study. And if we are going to start being one hundred percent open and honest with each other, sex is off the table. I am not ready for that right now." I told him. I half expected him to look shocked or angry with me, most guys would have had a come apart, but William just smiled sweetly at me.

"I can handle that brown eyes." He said as our car pulled up.

William opened the door for me and I slid into the lavish Rolls Royce. William slid in next to me and as soon as he shut the door the car began moving. My phone began chirping and I pulled it out of my clutch purse. It was Laura, I showed  William before rolling my eyes, flashing him a smile, and answering it.

"Yes?" I asked into the phone. Laura barely took a breath before talking very loudly on the other end of the phone.

"What the hell happened? Rachell called my mom and was screaming and yelling at her about you being engaged to some low life. Have I missed out on that juicy detail or is your mother finally lost her shit for reals?" I winced at Laura's loud, shrill, voice and glanced at William who no doubt heard the entire thing.

William held out his hand for the phone with a wicked grin. I eyed him nervously as I handed my cell phone to him. He winked at me mischievously before holding the phone to his ear.

"Hey Laura, I believe that Rachelle lost her shit long ago, and yes I told her that Jessica and I are engaged. We are kind of busy now, you know planning an engagement party, so we'll talk to you later." William said into the phone before quickly hitting the end button and handing me my phone.

I stared at him wide eyed, Laura was going to freak the hell out. She no doubt decided to take his words at face value and believe them. My phone started to wring again confirming my suspicions. I narrowed my eyes at William darkly.

"Great, now she's going to be on a damn rampage to find out the truth and when I tell her you were joking she probably wont believe me." I growled going to answer the phone but William stopped me, taking my phone and turning it on silent before handing it back to me.

"Let her sit and stew over it for a while." He said with a grin. I rolled my eyes but put my phone back into my clutch anyway.

"You realize she is just going to call you next and if you don't answer she will probably call Sean and he will be calling you too." I said and not a moment later his phone began ringing as well.

"Then they can both sit in suspense." William said before turning his phone on silent as well.

"Laura is going to be so pissed at you." I said with a laugh. I still couldn't believe he told her we were engaged or that her romantic toting ass believed it.

"She'll forgive me when she finds out about our new deal." He said with a smile. "What do you want to do for the rest of the day? We could get some studying in since you couldn't last night." I looked at him surprised, it wasn't a bad idea.

"That would be a good idea, although first I think we need to change into more comfortable clothes." I said with a smile.

William had the driver go to mine and Laura's apartment so that I could change and grab my study materials. I had thought we were going to study at my apartment but I realized that ultimately his house had more room. I hurried inside and to my room stripping out of my nice clothes and putting them away neatly before finding a pair of old swim team sweat pants and a dark grey t-shirt. I pulled my hair up into a quick pony tail and took my jewelry off. I pulled on a pair of slip on tennis shoes and grabbed my book bag and hurried out of the apartment locking up on the way. When I got into the car again, William grinned at me.

"What?" I asked as I set my bag down on the floor.

"Logan High Swim team huh?" He asked seemingly amused.

"Yep, butterfly was my favorite stroke." I said showing him the back of my shirt that had my individual events and best times. Butterfly was at the top of the list fallowed by 500Free and Backstroke.

"I can see that you have a pretty fast time. I also see that you never swam breaststroke." He said with a smile.

"I couldn't swim a legal breaststroke for the life of me." I said with as laugh. "How about you, you seem to know a lot about swim team."

"I swam on the summer swim team for a few years to keep in shape for football." He said with a shrug.

That was an interesting bit of news that I would be excited to put to the test. I usually went swimming on the weekends as a way to keep in shape maybe I'd bring him with and see just how good of a swimmer he really was.

When we got to his house, that I'd found out he shared with only his best friend Sean, he lead me to the living room where we had first met at the party I was dragged to. I smiled as sat down in the spot that I had sat last time.

"I'm going to go change out of this suit okay." William said, I nodded and began pulling my notebooks out of my bag.

I sat back into the couch and looked around the room, I didn't really notice the décor the last time I was here. There were old book shelves built into the walls that were filled with books just as old as the house itself. The intricate designs that where carved into the wooden shelves and baseboards of the room told me the large house, manner, was at least a hundred years old. It felt like a completely different place than it did two and a half weeks ago when there were drunken college students swarming the place. Back then it just seemed like a high end luxurious house that shouldn't be filled with unrelenting drunken behavior. Now it reminded me of prestige, money and power. It was clear just how well off Williams family was to be able to own such a place as just a home for William to live in why he goes to school.

"Okay, Sean isn't going to be home until Tomorrow morning. So there will be no parties or anything to distract us from studying." I turned at Williams voice to find him in a plain basic grey t-shirt and and a pair of grey sweatpants. He looked dang good, like he had just come of a commercial that advertised men's sportswear.

"Okay, what subjects do you need to study? I need to study philosophy and government." I said holding up my notebook filled with notes from the school year.

"How about I help you with those first and then we can take a break before studying the bar okay." He said with a smile and sat down next to me on the couch.

He reached down and pulled my feet up on his lap turning me to face him. I couldn't help the blush that spread across my face when he easily took my shoes off and placed a hand on my calf and the other started to massage my feet. It was simple and so smooth, as if we had been together for a long time and this is how we spent every Sunday night.

I realized I was staring at him and he was just letting me a smirk on his lips as he waited for me patiently. I shook the the thoughts of having him so close away and looked down at my notebook.

We studied for a few hours before taking a break to watch a movie. Some time durning the movie I had fallen asleep. When I woke up I was curled up into Williams chest on the couch. I couldn't remember when we had fallen asleep. I didn't even know what time it was. I turned slightly so I could look at William behind me.

"William." I whispered. He had one arm under my head and the other was draped across my stomach. He looked devilishly handsome with his hair tousled and a mess.

"Yes brown eyes?" He mumbled sleepily.

I couldn't help the quiet laugh that escaped my lips he looked so cute and innocent. When he heard the laugh he opened his eyes slowly and looked at me.

"We feel asleep." I said with a blush.

"Yes we did." He said with a smirk.

"What time is it? We have classes tomorrow." I said suddenly realizing how late it seemed.

William lifted his arm up and revealed a very expensive looking watch. Then raised his eyebrows in surprise.

"What?" I asked.

"It's almost two in the morning." He said.

"What!" I sat up swiftly and instantly regretted it as the blood rushed to my head. I groaned and held my head in my hands.

"You okay brown eyes?" William asked sitting up next to me.

"Yeah just sat up to fast, I'll be fine in a second." I said sighing.

"I'll go get you a glass of water." William said getting up.

I looked up and noticed my phone on the coffee table. I reached over and picked it up, looking through the missed calls and messages. Seven texts from my mother, ten from Laura and five missed calls for Laura. I sighed and started looking at the texts from Laura first.

Laura: What the hell is going on!

Laura: Jessica Mathews you better answer me!

Laura: Seriously Jess, just let me know you are okay.

Laura: Your mom called again, call me back!

...

I ignored the rest of the messages that where all basically the same thing and hurriedly sent her a text.

Me: I'm fine. I'm at Williams, we were studying and fell asleep. Sorry. Be home soon. P.S. we are not really engaged, just a joke.

I sent the text not a hundred percent expecting and answer but as soon as I went to set my phone down again it dinged loudly.

Laura: Seriously, that's all I get.

Laura: I'm going to bed, don't wake me up before eight in the morning.

I sighed she was pissed and rightfully so. William walked into the room as I set my phone down deciding not to respond to Laura or look at the texts from my mother. William handed me a glass of water and I took it gratefully.

"Laura is pissed." William said looking at his own phone.

"I've never seen her this mad." I whispered worriedly.

"She will be okay, it might take a couple hours but she will be fine." William said reassuring. "Do you want me to take you home?" He asked.

I nodded and started putting my notebooks in my bag again. We had spent almost four hours studying today. It wasn't bad. I got up and looked over at him, he chuckled and reached over running his fingers through my hair.

"You can stay if you want." He said pulling me closer. I smiled and leaned into his hug.

"I can't, if there is a chance Laura will talk to me now I need to take it." I said before looking up at him. He smiled and kissed me softly on the lips. It was a short and sweet kind of kiss but it left my entire body humming none the less.

"Alright brown eyes, then all take you home."
