Alfred moved so quickly that no one had time to react. He grabbed Ross's throat and growled, "I hope not, because if he kills me you'll still want the little red wolf and the big gray will eat you alive."

Bella's skin felt cold, and although she wanted to go, she felt frozen on the ground. He hadn't heard of the legend they were talking about—probably the story was about the people who lived here, and the story hadn't been carried further east. But this showed that the arrival of gray concerned them more deeply than they had anticipated.

What else can he hear among the reds? Who killed the girl?

Alfred released Ross and sat down. "Bring us some more beer. I have to find a way to get rid of this sad gray before I come to a real fight."
