Derek's attitude abruptly changed, and his eyes hardened as he fixed me with an intense gaze. "Who told you this?" he demanded his voice sharp and probing.

I hesitated, taken aback by his sudden shift in demeanor. "I... I overheard a conversation," I replied cautiously. I hadn't meant to pry into his family affairs, but the question had gnawed at me, and I couldn't help but seek answers.

I couldn't help but feel that I had ventured into territory that perhaps I shouldn't have.

"I mean…" I began, searching for the right words. "I'm sorry, but I just heard. I mean, no one told me," I explained, hoping to convey my genuine interest rather than any intrusion into his private life.
