Chapter 8: Considering

Under one of the sietches, a great chaos was ensuing among the Fremen. It's not apocalyptic chaos but religious.

"Repeat that again to me!" Stilgar, the Leader of the sietch shouted at one of the pilgrims who came from Arreken.

"He is here, Stilgar! The Lisan Al-gaib is here! And I saw him!"

"The prophecy has been fulfilled!" There was a fanatic fervor in his voice and in his eyes that it was almost impossible to distinguish him as normal.

"His mother is a Bene Gesserit! He made water out of thin air. He spoke our language as if he was one of us. He called me a brother!" He said, his mouth foaming in excitement. Stilgar gazed at the man incredulously trying to process the information.

"Calm down! Speak to me slowly."

And so after calming him down, the pilgrim started to narrate what happened slowly. After he was done, Stilgar was left shocked and slightly expcetant.

"I must confirm this." Stilgar said with a serious expression, then he headed deeper into the sietch to inform the Fedaykin and have them go with him to Arrakeen.

"I will go with the Fremen people, learn their way and be one of them. And I will bring them under my command by fulfilling prophecies one by one." Jake said which was received with a huge backlash.

"No! I won't allow it!" He slammed his fist softly into the table, shaking it up a bit.

"Your life is too precious to risk in the desert. You belong by my side; as my heir and son." Leto reasoned.

"The Duke is right, young master, it's too dangerous out there. One won't even survive two hours in the desert without a stillsuit let alone mingle with the Fremen." Thufir said.

"But Duncan managed to mingle with them." Jake said.

"Duncan is a Swordmaster of the Ginaz, young master. He is capable enough." Gurney voiced out.

"And I'm not?" Jake said with a questioning gaze which landed on Gurney.

It's no small matter to send Jake with the Fremen people to get some help. He is the heir of House Atreides and giver of vision, his value alone is as significant as the Duke's life.

So sending him out there with the Fremen is risking House Atreides' bright future.

"It's not what I'm implying, young master. Your life is too precious to risk. We can instead send Duncan, he is already familiar with the Fremen, he can get us some help." Gurney said his stance which made everyone nod.

"But it won't work." Jake said.

"The Fremen sees Duncan as a friend. They won't follow him, and they will certainly not help us drive away the Harkonnens. For them this is just another change in management, they are too used to this to be bothered. What they need is me, and the propaganda the Bene Gesserit planted." At Jake's reasoning everyone closed their mouths shut. What he pointed out was indeed right, there is no way the Fremen will help them just because Duncan asked them to.

What they need is a strong driving force to move and that force can only be their religious belief. Jessica knew this but she also knew that this would be extremely dangerous.

"Father. Please. This is for our House. Allow me to serve." Jake pleaded to his father in a sincere voice.

"You are already serving our House greatly, my son," Leto said with a soft voice.

"You said we must risk and sacrifice. This is the same as that. I shall risk and I will sacrifice if it means the survival of House Atreides." The sincerity and the conviction in his voice was palpable, enough for them to feel the actual weight of those words as if it wasn't immaterial sound but corporeal forces.

Leto was left speechless by his son's eloquence. He tried to reason but continued to stummer until he finally lifted the white flag.

"Sigh… just make sure you return alive. I shall have a meeting with the leader of one of the Sietches, you may commence your plan after I meet him." Leto said.

"Duncan, can you bring them here?" The Duke requested Duncan to which the latter bowed to and agreed.

Duncan was about to venture through the desert and find Stilgar, the leader of the Fedaykin Fighter and one of the leader of the Sietches, he rode one of the ornithopter to head into the desert however he was stopped mid-flight when he saw a giant stream of sandstorm approaching Arrakeen.

The sandstorm was traveling in a linear path which made it strange, as it grew closer Duncan Idaho finally managed to draw out the figure of what was approaching.

It was a giant sandworm and atop of it was a delegation of Fremen, riding the sandworm as it it was a surfing board.

The Fremen of Arrakis have developed a unique and intricate method for riding the giant sandworms, also known as Shai-Hulud. This practice, known as "worm-riding," is a vital part of Fremen culture and survival in the harsh desert environment.

The Fremen use a device called a "thumper," which creates rhythmic vibrations in the sand to attract a sandworm. The consistent, drumming sound mimics the natural vibrations that sandworms follow, drawing them to the location of the thumper.

They will  then position themselves at a distance from the thumper, ready to intercept the sandworm as it arrives. This requires precise timing and an understanding of the sandworm's behavior.

The Fremen then uses specialized tools called "maker hooks" or "hooks of the Maker." These hooks are designed to latch onto the segments of the sandworm's body.

As the sandworm approaches the thumper, the Fremen waits for the right moment to intercept. They then run alongside the sandworm and use the maker hooks to catch onto the creature's rough, segmented hide.

To steer the sandworm, they do it by pulling back on the maker hooks, the Fremen create an opening between the segments of the sandworm's body. This action exposes the softer inner tissues, which irritates the sandworm and causes it to rotate to keep the exposed area away from the sand.

With the sandworm rotating, the Fremen use this motion to climb up onto its back. They position themselves along the upper segments, away from the exposed soft tissues.

Once on top, the Fremen use the maker hooks to guide the sandworm's direction. By applying pressure and manipulating the hooks, they can influence the sandworm's movement across the desert.

Riding a sandworm allows the Fremen to travel vast distances across the desert quickly and efficiently. The sandworm's ability to move through the deep sands provides the Fremen with a significant advantage in their harsh environment.

Riding a sandworm is a rite of passage for Fremen youth, symbolizing their readiness to take on adult responsibilities within the tribe. Sandworm riding is essential for Fremen raids, travel between sietches, and escaping threats.
