Chapter 1: Goodbye, Usui

"Almost there now Karin! Just hold on a little bit longer and you will finally be able to be a true vampire just like the rest of us." Said Henry as he and his wife Calera proceeded with the ritual. Karin was in the middle of the red lake with large red bat wings sprouting from her back. Everything hurt on the inside and her chest ached with every beat of her heart. This was it, she told herself. After this, she wouldn't be the same person she once was. It made her truly sad, because she honestly felt like she was losing a very important part of herself. But it was too late to go back now.

"Usui… I'm so sorry. I wish I could have seen you one more time." She said with a sad smile and had a tear that escaped from her eye and streamed down her cheek. "Alright Henry, I think it's about time." Said Calera as she lowered her hand away from the sky with her husband following suit. "Come Karin. Walk over to us and take that final step." She said as she offered her hand out for her daughter to take. Karin was now able to move again and she slowly started approaching her family, only to shriek when a sword plunged through her mother's chest. "No! Mama!" She screamed out desperately.

Henry looked to his side to see his wounded wife fall to the ground. "Calera!" He said as he dropped down to his knees and scooped his wife up in his arms. Calera stroked his cheek with blood spilling from her mouth. "Take care of the children, Henry. I never said this enough… But I love you." She said before her eyes closed and she became limp as he held her. "That's one more Marker vampire wiped off of the face of the Earth! And it was done by my hands, Victor Sinclair!" Said the older vampire hunter who stood behind Karin's agonizing father.

"You bastard! I'm going to kill you for what you've done!" Henry said with his eyes glowing red. He turned around to strike at the blonde man but was too late when a wooden stake was stabbed through his heart. "PAPA!" Shouted Karin as she watched with horrified eyes atop the lake's surface. "You must be weak after using all of your power to perform the ritual. You're not even a challenge to me in your current state." Said Victor as he yanked out the wooden stake and Henry also collapsed, seeming to have died.

"It's a good thing I waited for you to perform this little ritual of yours, because if you hadn't made yourselves weak I would be having a much harder time exterminating you all." He heard rustling from behind him when Ren made his grand appearance. After sensing that his family was in danger, he made a mad dash back to the lake only to watch the hunter slay his parents. Fueled by rage, he lashed out without even thinking. "RAAAHH!" He roared out in frustration, but Victor pulled out a gun from underneath his coat and shot three rounds at him, which penetrated his chest. "GAH!" He said as he fell to the ground while clutching his gunshot wounds.

"Ah, the arrogance of youth. You might be a vampire, but you're still a child when it comes to combat. Only a fool would make his presence so clear when trying to sneak attack someone." He said smugly as he started reloading his gun with more silver bullets. Ren glared at him but was in too much pain to escape. "You're just a weak human… Go to hell." He said venomously, but Victor only smirked in response. "Yes. I might just be a human, but I am a human with a gun." He said before he unloaded three more rounds into Ren's chest who became lifeless as he laid motionless on the ground.

"BIG BROTHER! NOOOO!" Said Karin but she clutched her heart when her blood started to affect her. The negativity that was boiling around her was becoming too much for her to bare, and she was about to lose control at any moment. Her and Anju were the last members of their family, and Karin gasped when Victor aimed his gun at her next. "The second oldest child of the Marker clan. Your face alone is enough to make me feel sick from how much you look like that grandmother of yours. And just like your grandmother who seduced my ancestor and ruined my families name, you've gone and turned my grandson into a traitor as well. Any last words?" He said as he cocked his gun, but Anju stepped in front of his way with her arms spread out protectively.

"Anju! Don't, it's too dangerous! Just run away!" Yelled Karin, but she fell to her knees when her blood only started to ache even more. "I won't let you hurt my sister." Anju said as she activated her vampire powers of hypnosis. Her pupils turned cat like and glowed a bright yellow. At first, Victor acted as if he was under her control and started to lower his weapon, but then he smirked and flipped the gun in his hand and proceeded to pistol whip the young girl in the face. Anju's eyes grew wide as blood sprayed from her mouth. "Big sister…" She said lastly before she fell to the ground and was unmoving. "ANJU!" Said Karin as she started to cry.

"And with her gone, that officially makes you the loan survivor of the Marker Clan! I was really eager to kill you next before that brat got in my way. But I guess it was for the best because I got to save the best for last." He said as he pulled out a rifle and pointed it at her. "You vampires are nothing but monsters that pray on human blood and manipulate our emotions with those poisonous fangs of yours!" He said as he cocked his gun. "No! You're wrong! We are not monsters! We're just… a little different from the rest of you. That's all." She said as she stared at her knees. "Different is an understatement my dear. The fact that your kind must feed on the blood of others is enough to prove that you are evil creatures. Now be a good girl and sit still for me."

Karin could feel her heartbeat quicken as her bloods affinity only grew worse. But the feeling was much different now then when her blood increased. Rather than feeling so full to the point of bursting, she felt empty inside. "Oh Usui… Please help me." She said as she squeezed her eyes tightly and the images of her first love started flooding her brain. "Usui…. Usui?" But soon, her vision started to turn red and the vision of her beloved Usui was quickly overpowered by the desire for blood. She slowly looked up and her eyes were glowing red. She hissed with her fangs elongating in her mouth. She flapped her large wings and inverted herself upside down with her arms crossed over her chest. "HSSSSSHH!" She blurted out, having lost her mind due to her blood lust.

Victor grinned from ear to ear at the sight of her power. "So you've finally decided to reveal your true nature, vampire! Have at it then!" He said before he shot three more rounds which Karin maneuvered in the air to avoid. After she dodged, she rushed him and flew straight at him with high speeds. The vampire hunter had barely any time to react when he used his gun to shield himself and hold her back. Karin was now perched on top of his gun and hissed at him. "What the hell?!" He said as he gritted his teeth and tried to bash her with his gun, but she swiveled around him and kicked him in the back, making him fall over on his stomach.

She landed on top of him and grabbed him by his head with one hand and used her other hand to pull down his collar. Her fangs were inches away from his neck, and she was too far gone to notice that Usui had appeared in the clearing and watched with a terrified look when she sunk her fangs into the hunter's neck. She was instantly washed over in an unfamiliar feeling as the warm blood coated her tongue and flowed down her throat. It was much different then giving her blood to others. It was more satisfying and hell of a lot more tasty than anything she's ever eaten in the past. Once she had her fill, she released the hunter who was now unconscious as she clasped her cheeks with blood dripping from her mouth and a deep blush spread across her face.

"Is that what it's supposed to feel like? That was… I can't even explain how good that was. Is this pleasure I'm feeling what it means to be a real vampire?" She said to herself until she caught a familiar scent. She looked up after regaining her senses and gasped when she saw Usui staring at her. "Usui! How long have you been standing there?!" She said before she stood up and covered her mouth which was still covered in blood. "Maaka… Are you alright? What was that just now? Is your blood okay?" He asked her as he tried to approach her, but she raised her hand to stop him. "NO! Don't come any closer! I don't want to hurt you…" She said with tears streaming down her face. Usui frowned but stopped in his tracks to avoid scaring her away.

"Do you feel better now at least? After injecting your blood into him, I mean…" He said while rubbing the back of his neck, and Karin turned her head away from him in shame. "I wasn't giving him blood, Usui. I was… I was drinking from him. I'm a real vampire now." She said in a low tone that was barely audible. Usui smiled awkwardly, refusing to believe what he had just heard. "No… That can't be possible. I mean, you're standing right in front of me and it's daylight still." He said as he tried to converse with her but Karin just shook her head and pointed to the sky. "That's only because of the eclipse my father made. I can feel it, that I'm… different on the inside. If you don't believe me, then I'll show you." She said with a serious expression on her face.

She raised her hand to the sky and her eyes started glowing that gold color whenever a vampire uses their power which she was unable to do before. She took control of the bats and a part of them uncovered the sun so that a little bit of light could poke through. She walked over to the beam of light and put her arm in its raise, and instantly her skin started to blister and seer. She took her arm out once it became too painful and showed it to him. "See how the sun burnt me? I'm not the same person you once knew.  I'm a real vampire now, Usui." She said with a painful smile to try and hide her sadness, but she couldn't stop herself from crying. "I'm so sorry Usui… But I can't be with you anymore!" She said as she turned to run away, but he beat her to it when he caught up to her and grabbed her by the arm.

"DON'T BE RIDICULOUS! I promised to never abandon you, and I don't plan to break that promise even if you are like the rest of your family! So what if I can't see you at school anymore? So what if I can't be with you in the same way that we were before? It doesn't change what I feel inside. I love you, Karin!" He said as he pulled her into a hug. Her eyes grew wide when he wrapped his arms around her, and for a moment, she felt at peace. She started to hug him back, but soon, that hunger quickly returned. She could feel the unhappiness inside of him which beckoned her too feed. She stood on her tiptoes and was about to bite him with Usui about to let her, but she realized what she was about to do and took a step back. "Karin?" he frowned and lifted a handout towards her.

"This is exactly why I can't be with you Usui. Like I said, I'm different. Just now, all I could think about was drinking your blood. And that might not scare you, but it terrifies me!" She said as she looked at him with pain and sadness written all over her face. "You're just a hot bodied meal. And I never thought of you that way before, but I just can't help it! I want to bite you, and taste you…" She said as she raised her hand which started to glow in a golden light. Usui took a step back as he looked at her cautiously. "Maaka? What do you think you're doing?" He said in disbelief. She flashed him one more smile, letting her heart take control of her one more time.

"Thank you for caring about me Usui. And for loving me… I even got to hear you say my real name for the first time. So thank you!" She said as she continued to smile, but Usui was starting to have a bad feeling. "Why does it sound like you're saying goodbye?" He said with his voice shaking, but she didn't reply as she continued to look away from him. She sighed and walked closer to him, planting a kiss on his cheek. "That's because I am. This will be our last moment together. And… I love you too. So please, for me, live a happy life and I hope you fulfill all of your wishes!" She grabbed him by the face and his mind started going blank. All the events of what just happened and the previous night faded away from his mind as he was forced to forget.

He fainted into her arms and she carefully set him down on the ground. She was no longer able to pretend to be strong as she sat down while balling into her hands. Usui was all she had left, as her family was now dead. She had no one else in the world to turn too, or at least, that's what she thought. The first to rise was her father Henry who sat up while checking out his stab wound. "Ouch… For a second there, I really thought I was going to die." He said as he frantically looked around and saw Karin who was staring at him as if she had just seen a ghost. "My darling Karin! Are you alright?!" He said as he ran over to her and pulled her into an affectionate hug. "I-I'm fine! But what about you papa? I saw you get stabbed!" She said as she cried into her father's chest, happy to see that he was still alive.

"You stupid girl. Did you honestly think we could die that easily? We vampires are much more resilient than any human." Said Calera as she walked over. "But I have to admit, I was a tad bit dramatic back there. I saw my life flash before my eyes. But it's good to see that everything worked out in the end." She said with a prideful laugh. Anju and Ren then walked up, and as soon as Karin saw her little sister, she let go of her father and ran to her, pulling her into a big hug and nuzzling the top of her head. "ANJU! Thank god you're alright! Don't ever do anything reckless like that ever again! Do you hear me?!" She said as she scolded the shorter, long silver haired girl.

Anju flinched in her embrace, but slowly started hugging her back. "Big sister… Are you not still mad at me for what I did to Miss Maki?" She said as she looked up at her with tears in the corner of her eyes. Karin sighed and shook her head before she stroked her sister's beautiful hair affectionately. "No, of course I'm not mad at you. At the time it was quite a shock, I can't even lie. But I understand what you were going through now, and I'm sorry for taking my anger out on you. But we're in the same boat now so I have no right to judge you." She said reassuringly. Ren grimaced as he stared at his bullet whole ridden dress jacket. "So what does that mean? That you're a normal vampire now?"

Karin smiled sadly and nodded her head. "Yes, it appears that I am. So you better stop bullying me stupid Ren!" Said Karin as she beat on her brother's chest who then smirked and started giving her a nuggie. "Just because you're a normal vampire doesn't change that you're an idiot. And as long as I'm your older brother, I will say and do what I want to you you ungrateful brat!" Karin grabbed onto his arms as she cried out. "Okay, okay! Now stop! Please!" She begged and sighed with relief when he let her go. He crossed his arms and saw Usui past out on the ground. "I see that Kenta boy is here. What shall we do with him? Do we keep allowing him to see our family now that his assistance is no longer needed? He already knows too much to erase his memories fully without turning him into a blank slate."

Karin shook her head. "I already erased his memories far back enough to where he won't remember about this incident. He should wake up thinking it's still Christmas eve if I did it right." She said with sorrow in her voice. She had to remind herself that this was for the best. Anju grabbed her big sister's hand and looked at her sympathetically. "I don't mind letting him still be an ally for our family. If him being around makes you happy, then it will make me happy too." Said the emotionless girl. "No… This is my call. With everything that's changed, I don't think I have the heart to look at him in the same way anymore. He's better off just forgetting about me." She said as she forced on a smile.

Henry sighed but respected his daughter's choice. Not that he was against it though since Kenta Usui being out of his Karin's life would mean that he got to hold onto his little girl just a little bit longer. "Well let's leave before the hunter wakes up. Is everyone ready?" He said as he begun to make preparations to take them back home. He summoned a swarm of bats to carry them back to their mansion, but before Karin hopped on, she looked at Usui one more time with love. "Goodbye, Usui…" She said as she wiped away a tear and joined her family. "Are you really alright big sister?" Asked Anju as she sat beside her sister. "Mhm. It hurts right now, but I'll get over it eventually." She said in response. They took off towards the skies and left before Usui woke up.

About an hour after they left, Winner finally caught up to him and saw Usui past out on the ground. "Hey! Wake up! What happened to you?!" He said as he knelt by the boy and started to frantically shake him awake. Usui sat up while holding his head, confused by what was happening. He looked around, perplexed by how he ended up outside. The last thing he remembered was working at Julian's and Karin's brother came to give him a visit. But what happened after that? "Winner? What the…? How did we get out here?" He said as he groaned. Winner's mouth fell open by his sudden question. "Are you serious right now? We came out here to save Miss Karin! How could you forget that?!" He shouted which made Usui flinch.

Save Karin? What did he mean by that? Was she in danger? "He stood up and looked around and then they both saw Winner's grandfather who was unconscious only a few feet away from them. "Grandfather!" Winner shouted as he rushed over to him. His head flopped to the side and he saw the two fang marks that were left on the side of his neck. "He's been bitten! So, the Marker's got the best of him and escaped. Which would also probably explain your memory loss too, Kenta Usui." He said as he made sure that there weren't any other injuries on the older Sinclair. "Memory loss? Do you mean to tell me that someone from Karin's family erased my memories? But why would they do that? I thought I was their ally; I mean, they did entrust their secret to me after all!" He said while worried.

"Maybe they wanted to go into hiding. Or perhaps, and this is just my speculation… But Miss Karin was the one who erased your memories. And if she was able to do that, then that means that the ritual was a success. We could not come to save her in time." He said as he stared at the ground with his blonde bangs covering his eyes. Usui gasped when bits and pieces of what happened started coming back to him. He couldn't remember everything, but he knew that they came here for something very important. "Maaka! Maaka, where are you?!" He shouted out while frantically looking for her. DAMN IT, he mentally shouted to himself. Why would she do this?!
