Chapter 16: The Secret Deal

After walking out of the dining room, Jiran strolled around the Air Temple Island. The air within that island is very clean which is rare to find nowadays in Republic City since all you could inhale are fumes coming from Sato Mobiles.

That is why Air Nomads won't like to be in Republic City for a prolonged time. Of course the same goes for Jiran that's why he is taking a taste of fresh air as much as possible before he crosses over to Republic City.

Inhale! Exhale!

After taking a deep breath of fresh and clean air, Jiran stretched out his hands. He then walked into the edge of the small island and then as a security measure, he looked left and right.

Seeing that there was no peeping tom, Jiran pumped his legs and jumped towards the edge. He was expected to fall and plunge straight into the water.

Firebenders have achieved partial levitation, they use their fire as a jet as a source of propulsion to lift them off the ground. However Airbenders aren't the same, they manipulate air but they can't fly.

There is one record that said one of the Airnomads achieved perfect flight, his name was Guru Laghima. But that was in ancient time, benders this day don't believe that it is possible to achieve full levitation.

Many benders can levitate themselves but not perfect flight such as weightlessness.

However what Jiran did next was contradictory to that. The moment he jumped off from the ground his body was lifted up smoothly through the air as if a giant gentle hands guided him.

There was nothing providing him with any propulsion, no jets of fire nor was there a gust of powerful wind pressure only full flight.

Any Airbenders seeing him right now would gawk at him, to achieve flight through airbending was the highest feat an Airbender could dream and yet here he was, only seventeen and yet capable of already grasping that dream.

Laghima was an Air Nomad guru and renowned poet who lived at the Northern Air Temple around 3,829 BG. He discovered the secret to weightlessness, which allowed him to unlock the airbending ability of flight] This essentially allowed Laghima to become untethered from the earth and live the last forty years of his life without ever touching the ground.

Guru Laghima grew up at the Northern Air Temple, at a time when the four nations had not yet been formed. He began writing poetry about subjects such as instinct and illusion, and had at least one contemporary philosophical rival, Guru Shoken. He eventually relocated to live alone on a mountain near the Northern Air Temple. At some point, Laghima discovered the secret to weightlessness by relinquishing his earthly attachments.

That's right, the secret towards flight is letting go of all your earthly attachments which Jiran haven't really achieved yet, but despite still clearly being attached to worldly desires, Jiran is flying.

The answer lies in Jiran and he will give us that answer later in the story. But for now, let us see what his reason for going to Republic City is.

*********

Jiran landed down on the ground smoothly without anyone even catching a glimpse of his amazing accomplishment. He removed his Air Nomad outer robe and placed it hidden somewhere and then after finally finishing his simple disguise, Jiran walked down the city in leisure.

There was nothing unusual in his visit, in fact it looked like he just visited Republic City to tour around but as the night falls and the sun hides in the horizon, a sudden shift in Jiran occured.

Jiran continued walking around the city until eventually his feet landed him in an abandoned building.

Abandoned buildings usually are the trading place or the hub of negotiation for illegal trading and criminals, and true to that trope, Jiran was greeted with four individuals wearing dark leather masks with glowing green goggles.

They were chi-blockers. Notorious criminal of the Republic City and part of the Equalist.

However despite having the moniker of a notorious criminal, they didn't express any outward aggression towards Jiran, as if he was their guest.

It was such a strange sight to see. Criminal being polite to an Airbender.

"The great leader, Amon, is waiting for you inside," Jiran nodded back in response and entered the abandoned building.

Immediately after entering he was greeted by the sight of a man in a white mask with a big red dot on its forehead. Leader of the Equalist, Amon, that's who that man is.

Amon stood up from his seat and looked at his subordinate, he gestured at them to go out and with a bow they heeded his command and walked out of the building.

"I have uphold my end of the deal, and now you must do yours" Amon said towards Jiran with a poison laced tone.

"Oh don't worry, I will uphold our deal. I will not kill your brother for the time being." Said Jiran. His tone was completely different, he sounded deranged and psychopathic unlike his usual personality.

Devoid from the warmth present in his voice when he talked with Korra.

"Time being? That is not part of our deal!" Amon stood up in anger and raised his voice, slamming his down the table.

"Our deal was that I ambush the avatar and you appear as the hero and then you leave my brother alone!" He shouted, then he walked over to Jiran who was looking down at him with a small and ominous smile.

"Forever." He finished.

"There was some last minute addition to our deal, your brother, Councilman Tarrlok will be safe for the time being. He will not be harmed unless he attacks me first or you pose a threat to me." Jiran said and smiled at Amon, then gestured his palm and pushed Amon away from him before taking a seat.

"So our deal is essentially the same, why are you so upset?"

"You changed our deal on a whim! How can I trust you to take our deal seriously when you are acting like that?"

Amon couldn't take it anymore and took a fighting stance, slowly Jiran felt his blood being slowly influenced however his nonchalant and confident gait didn't disappear.

"I'm sure you wouldn't want to resort to that, Noatak." Hearing that name being spoken, Amon froze.

"Not only can I kill you right here right now, I can also kill your only remaining blood relative in this world. And I can do it in the most painful way possible."

"So maybe attacking me won't be in your best interest."
