Chapter 43: Chapter 43

Time passed in a haze. I didn't want to be awake for it. I didn't care. I wasn't even all that hungry anymore. Just so so tired.

When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself in a stereotypical hospital room with an IV in my arm and my two best friends sitting in plastic chairs at my bedside.

"Ryann," Ava croaked.

"I'm not dead," I said, my voice scratchy.

The room was too damn white. White floors, white ceiling, white walls, and it smelled like strong cleaners. Out in the hall, I could hear people and faint beeping. My blanket was a pale yellow, but I was surprised to find it was soft when I rubbed my hand over it.

Dan handed me a big plastic mug with a straw sticking out of the lid while Ava pressed a button so that my bed sat up. I took a sip and felt the water soak into my tongue. Another and I felt better. More alert.

"How long was I out?"
