"Leave her the fuck alone!" Dan growled.

"Oh, please no." Ava sobbed.

I just stared back at the man who was going to hurt me.

His hand lifted, and he ran his fingertips up my neck until his whole palm closed around it, not squeezing yet, but the threat was clear.

"5-27-18"

All eyes turned to Chance, and Beady Eyes released me to look at him.

Chance was back on his knees, and his eyes were as hard as I'd ever seen them. "5-27-18," he repeated and clenched his jaw.

The man smirked and headed to the dining area where the safe was located.

I stared at Chance as my whole body seemed to give out. I sank into the couch, unable to look away from those hard eyes. He looked like hell, but I hardly noticed at the moment. All I could think about was that he'd taken a beating but wouldn't let me do the same.
