When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated to entice the world into World War One, a lineage of sorts was formed. After witnessing the the law man so desperately tried to keep, crumbled over a coward's kill, a single train of thought entered a Japanese Historian's mind.
Assassination held power so untold and untamed that even the trick of stealth and the will of a rat could shift the world's balance.
Shiro Hitoshimi grew intent on learning why one would assassinate and how such a shameful act was even done. In his research he learned the ways of a blade, martial arts, poison, and the art of stealth. With his knowledge traversing such an array of useful techniques, he knew he had to pass this knowledge on.
In so the Rose Compass was established. A single school hidden away dedicated to teaching young willing talent the art of a kill.
And in the passage of time, Rose Compass split into Four Schools that spread out with one goal in mine, to train those willing to learn.
In this, the four schools were named the Demon's Cave, Dragon's Dominion, Grimm's Taboo, and the Angel's Sanctum.
These Four Schools hellbent of trying there hand at changing the fate of the World by slowly weaving their influence and as time came to be, a single reward came to those who graduated from such a school.
A Jesus Card, a tiny slip of the strongest metal on Earth. The Jesus Card made any law, restriction, and ban void to the holder. As long as they completed a kill every year, they would gain the ability to do as they please whenever and wherever.
Although, only ten Jesus Cards were permitted for each passing class, meaning the students would have to prove themselves and rank high amongst their colleagues.
And in so these Schools competed against one another in hopes of doing what happen all those years ago, change the world with the simple will of a rat.
I rinsed my hands in the sink, the blood that definitely did not belong to me slowly washing away, the memories of what I did staining my mind. I did what I had too.
They were going to kill me.
I hated it, killing. It only brought more killing, something no one wanted.
I looked at the shattered mirror in front of me, for a split second, I saw my Father, his grey eyes staring with rage, his hand on his hilt, the black katana which had way over a thousand lives rinsed away from the blade.
Why did it come to this? Why was I being attacked? All I wanted was to go through life normally, but day after day, these men in black tuxedos chased me to the ends of the earth. Saying a single sentence.
"Master L requires your presence."
I shook my head and cracked my knuckles, the blood was gone. I turned to see the three men lifelessly laying about. I would make sure to forget their faces, it was best if I did.
"You are proficient in the use of your fist. Karate, Judo, Muy Tai boxing?"
I laughed as I dried my hands on a towel, "All three. If I'm not mistaken, you must be Master L?"
The Asian man walked in, a black tuxedo neatly wrapped around his muscular body, and a golden lion cane in his hand. He had flowing black hair, his beard slowly turning white.
"I may be."
I turned to face him, "Well if you weren't, this is the part where you run from all the blood and alert the authorities."
Master L chuckled as he used his cane to poke one of the bodies, "You snapped his neck so it looked like he tripped and fell. You used the weapons he had so your finger prints are hidden among his. You did not murder these men Leland."
I leaned against the wall, my lungs still gasping for air, "Then...what the hell else does it look like?"
I noticed my wrist was hurting.
"You killed these men."
I laughed aloud, I guess the man who wants to see me has to be a nut case. They can never be normal can they? I face palmed and picked at a cut on my shoulder, "What the hell do you want L, I'm tired of killing your goons, I want to live a normal life."
Master L shook his head and checked the next body, "Cut the jugular, but... not deep enough that if he was given immediate attention, he would live." Master L stepped over the body, his black shining dress shoes stepping perfectly between the blood puddles.
What the hell does this man want?!
"You know a normal life is almost impossible, I know you are smart. I asked some of my colleagues to check your grades. Perfect until high school, then perfect seventies across the board. What happen Leland, why did you suddenly wish for a normal life?"
I stared at the blood that inched toward me. the dark pool reflecting my face, my black hair a mess.
"My Father. I can assume you know of him if you are looking for me. He tested me every year on my birthday, something that would test my skill on a different level. Last year..."
I stopped. Why did I need to tell this man anything? He only made my life harder. I literally killed three men in a bathroom of an abandoned school section. If they attacked me in public what then, what would happen to my chance of living a normal life?
"Tell me Leland, why do you not seek the art of the kill, why are you scared."
I felt the rage boil in my stomach.
"Why is the son of the Last Ronin such a pussy?"
The Last Ronin, the name given to my father after he massacred an entire room filled with World Leaders.
"I don't have to tell you shit old man!" I pushed off the wall and approached him, "Now get the hell out of my face before I have to kill you too..."
Master L smiled, his dark brown eyes looking straight through me. In an instant, I was falling, his cane snapping out, an explosion of gold light taking up my vision.
What the Hell?! I looked him dead in the eyes as I crashed to the tile.
"There will be no more killing today, I am in no mood to kill a child."
I sat their, "So what do you want, me to tell me what my crazy Father made me do?"
Master L gripped his cane, "Yes, you learn fast, great."
He started walking away. "Wait!" I grabbed the sink and pulled myself up, " I had to kill him. My final test was to take his life. A one on one fight with a katana, five minutes or he would of killed my friends. I did what I had to do so they could live."
Master L grimaced, "I knew that man was drastic but doing that..."
Master L grunted and started to leave once again.
"Where are you going?! What was that golden light?!"
He turned, "Your future. One more test for me to submit you into my school, just live your normal life for this week. After I will make your life a living hell."
He disappeared, the room filled with the scent of iron. I wiped the blood away from my mouth, taking one more glance at the mirror.
My Father was no longer there, the perfect image of me looking back.
My life was already a living hell.
