Chapter 15: Confrontation

“I still cant believe he called you out in front of everyone, even Mohan.”  Neelam sympathetically sighs into the phone. “Yeah, he's such a jerk!” I let out. “Oh and,” I begin to raise my voice “he called me judgmental, ! I mean seriously c'mon, he doesn't even know me at all!” I breathe harder into the phone. I can hear Neelam click her teeth, “Well I don't understand him. So you didn't get to know what he wanted to say about Wahid huh?” she inquires.

“No.” I groan “I so wanted too, but Terance pulled me away.” I recap for her.

“good thing your grandma doesn't like him, otherwise she would've been pushing for you to marry him” she jokes. “Yeah, shes rallied up the troops against him though,” I say fondly “My mother called him a few things I wont repeat.”

“He still looked annoyed when I got there.” she laughs. “Yeah, I bet he was, I  dodged him all night after that. Except for the cake thing.” I laugh remembering how he tried to come and get some dessert from the table and I took the piece he was going for.

“That was vindictive.” she cracks, I laugh louder, “who cares remember hes the jerk!” I shrug my shoulders. Just as I say that in walks Akhil, cupping his hands and blowing his breath in them. He clears his throat and begins walking toward my desk, staying quiet as to not be rude “I'll call you back, I think my uncle forgot he had an appointment today.” I say ending my call.

“No, I didn't have an appointment.” he shakes his head. I let out an over drawn sigh. “Can I help you sir?” I roll my eyes. He takes a step closer, and I have to admit my heart jumps a bit as I take in the sight of him. His dark hair tossed by the wind, the cold has beat at his cheeks to make them a rosy pink. His deep green eyes flickering as if hes troubled, his full lips half open.

I notice he hasnt shaved, and scruffiness makes him even more attractive, as it compliments his strong jaw. His pointed nose is also red at the tip, a feeling I always hate. I get up and turn the heater on, a gesture that doesn't go unnoticed.

“Thanks.” He grins and takes a seat in front of my desk. “I'm cold.” I correct him, taking my gesture back. His smile fades and he bites his lower lip. “So,” he clears his throat again. “I came, to apologize, I figured you'd be here.” I sit at my desk.

“I work here,” I hiss “of course I'd be here.” His face flinches a bit. “Look, I've tried to tell you before that I think we've got started on the wrong foot. People often feel that I am, well. Stand offish, but I'm just shy.” he runs his fingers through his already messy hair.

“Of  course” I patronize. He ignores it, “I-I'm sorry if I was rude to you, I actually like you a lot. Rishi told me you like-” I cut him off. “Whoa, stop right there. All of a sudden you like me?” my tone becoming harsh. “Why is that?”  He pauses for a moment, his eyes scanning my face.

“Your different. Your not like the bouncing, plastic, pretty rich girls I see all the time. Your argumentative, opinionated sometimes overly, and blunt.” he smiles. “call me crazy, but I like that about you.” “Am I supposed to swoon now?” I cant hold back my anger any longer.

“What?” hes surprised at the hostility in my voice. “I'm not pretty, or rich, I'm over opinionated, yet you've been able to muster the courage to like me.” I clench my jaw. “I didn't mean it like that-” he starts, I throw my hand in the air to silence him.

“I dont care how you meant it, you said it. You've been able to realize all this about me in what? Not even two months of knowing me, and never holding an actual conversation with me? I've had not one decent moment with you but you me!” I push my self to stand up from my desk. He says nothing and  just keeps looking at me.

A woman walks in and begins to look around. “Wheres your rice?” she politely calls at me. “Down the street lady!” I bark back. She's shocked at my rudeness and scurries out of the store. Akhil looks back at her, and I can tell he wants to do the same thing. I continue “You wanna know what I think of you?” he sighs “Not really.” I ignore him “Your so freaking full of yourself! Your insulting, and rude, not shy! Your so caught up in your own hype you see everyone as unimportant.” I can feel the blood boiling in my veins.

“Am I?” he asks his voice still calm. “Yes! You are. The fact that you could even think I could betray Wahid for you to hurt him again!” I slam my hand on my desk. “Whoa, alright that's enough!” he jolts out of his seat, “Do you really even Wahid?” his eyes are glazed over just at the mention of his name.

“I know enough, enough to know that your a slimy jerk!” I release, his face hardens. “If you really knew him, we wouldn't be having this conversation. I'm done listening to you. I came here to apologize and that's what I did.” he starts for the door.

“Oh what are you finally defeated?” I say jumping full force down his throat. “His ex-girlfriend wasn't enough, you have to try and snatch me away too. Someone so and !” I'm screaming now beginning to frighten myself.

He stops and turns around to face me. His stance is square, face is fully red, “His what?” his voice cracks.  “His ex-girlfriend.” I say slowly spelling it out for him. He lets out an angry laugh. He opens his mouth to say something, and then closes it.

He looks at me square in the eyes, then walks out of my uncles store. Leaving me out of breath, angry, and wondering whats going through his head.
